  1. He's already made noise about retiring from footy altogether. Too fickle for me, although would improve us massively in a heart beat. In a perfect world he was committed to playing out a full career, I'd have no hesitation handing over a Salem type plus a pick. None whatsoever.

    Just some food for thought.

In 2004, Hawthorn won 4 games and finished 15th with a percentage of 70.23.

In 2005, Hawthorn won 5 games and finished 14th with a percentage of 92.01.

In 2006, Hawthorn won 9 games and finished 11th with a percentage of 85.70.

In 2007, Hawthorn won 13 games and finished 5th with a percentage of 113.05.

In 2008, Hawthorn won 17 games and finished 2nd with a percentage of 131.85. They went on to pinch the flag and missed the finals altogether the following year.

My point? We're tracking at a relatively good pace. Obviously, the reason it's so frustrating for our supporters is that we've rebuilt 2 or 3 times since we last made it to the finals.

I've said all season that we'll win 10-12 games. Obviously, we won't get 12, but I still think we'll get 10. Even if we don't, we'll get 8+ now, which is comparable with their 2006 season. But it looks like we'll have a stronger percentage than they had that year.

Natural improvement will come again next year as our young team gains more experience. Coupled with 1-2 important players that we acquire in FA/trading, hopefully they'll make us even better again.

So 11-13 wins next year should be the target and is likely if we continue on our current trajectory. That's a terrific foundation for Goody to build on in his second season, where we should be aiming for the top 4.

Of course, injuries can play a part (see the Bulldogs this year, who look like missing out on the top 4 now) and personnel changes, but Hawthorn's path shows some patience is required and that in fact, although it may be frustrating given what we've already been through, we are a real chance for some success starting 2017.

Sure, but the great unknown for us is Goodwin taking over.

I laughed when he was left on his own to play on Wright, where were the McDonald's or Frost?

Hunt is a beauty, so nice to see someone with genuine pace who runs the lines. He's the classic player who may not get huge numbers but will always have an impact.

Totally. Funny thing was, he almost brought it to ground, despite Wright taking it in his hands out in front.

Petraccas` pass to Kent streaming out of the midfield to the city end was sublime. Probably the highlight of the day other than Watts winning goal. Has elite written all over him, it`s just a matter of 20 or 30 more games under his belt.

That was utter class. Kent was literally standing still and the GC defender still couldn't get close to him.

And the pass to Dawes, where he kicked it almost 50m off the outside of his boot to advantage was probably even better.

Jesse slid into the point post with his knee in the second quarter to take a mark. Got up gingerly, took the kick, stuffed that up and hobbled off the ground. Came back on later but he was hobbling, kicked another set shot point I think but dare I say it he should not have come back on at all.

I was there, and watching. My point was that Jaded was talking about how it looked like his knee was buckling etc, and hoping it didn't get more damaged. But yeah, definitely thought he would have just bruised the bone or something.

  6. 34 minutes ago, Jaded said:

He definitely was struggling. He kept pulling up and his knee kept buckling. Thank god he got through the game without doing more damage.

He had a good first quarter, but once he was injured it was all over for him.

I haven't seen any of the post match reporting, but it looked like it would have been a massive knock that cause it to bruise/stiffen up.

Don't think they'd have let him go back on if it was structural, or more damage would be done, but the number of people hanging it on him is astonishing in the circumstaces...

    What do you probably?

All you've done for the last week is [censored] and moan about how performance is irrelevant and that the win is all that matters. Now you're pissing and moaning that the win is irrelevant, and that the performance is all that matters.

Do you just like being a whiny, boring person?

As long as Geelong don't pinch another flag. I have a feeling whoever wins it this year will be a very ordinary winner. There's no real standout team this season. Yes, I know Hawthorn are two games clear on top, but they've played some ordinary footy at times this year.

    A hypocritical Christian? Never.

    Isn't he a Mormon?

Apart from the 4 points, what a terrible day for supporters.  Perfect weather, no reason for such putrid decision and skills.

Vince has put in some great games wearing the Jumper, but he also goes off the radar too much lately.  Was a very bad display of AFL football and frankly I am sick of the team over using the ball.  When are the coaches going to coach this out of them?

Absolute stinker of a game and really hope this team under Goodwin starts making the MCG our fortress.  Surely there are better options than Dawes....he totally stuffs up our forward structure.

Utter nonsense. He allows Watts to take the third forward. Why do you think Watts was able to outmark his opponent all day?

    Bump.

Today we had Tyson get caught holding the ball after taking a mark in the middle of the ground, Gawn handpass into the man on the mark, vandenBerg on the half forward line handpass to Jones who was under pressure instead of just kicking it himself and Kent take so long to get back behind the man on the mark on the half forward line that was forced to go sideways which was turned over and resulted in a Gold Coast goal.

Why can we not get the basics of making practical decision from a mark or free kick right?

How hard is it to get back quickly behind the mark and not kick under unnecessary pressure?

    Just bad decision making today.

Agreed, but he's had an ordinary year. Apart from a couple of games loose off half back, he's been a shadow of 2014/2015.

This. He's been undisciplined and wasteful for at least the last 6 weeks. And petulant.

Well we beat GWS but yeah that doesn't count.

We should have won at least 6 in 2014.

Last year should have won at least 8.

We should be on 9 wins at this stage.

I like what Roos has brought to this club but ultimately, leadership has let us down during games we should be winning, and he and the coaching staff have all too often gone against their mantra during selection. I am still filthy about the Essendon loss and the Saints a few weeks ago. I can let the first Saints loss pass because it was a quick turnaround after the Sunday night game.

8 was my pass last year, and 10 is my pass this year. If we don't reach 10 this year (spoiler: we won't) then it'll be an asterix next to Roos tenure that would only be removed if the talent he has brought in leads us to finals in 2017.

I still think it's a between-the-ears issue. We should smash GC tomorrow but I suspect a close game. A loss would undoubtedly mark Roos' tenure as a failure on most supporters eyes.

Really, we haven't made any more progress in three years than Bailey did in three. Granted we were coming from further back, and I still think Roos has been a better coach than Bailey, but we haven't "turned the corner".

Roos and his team have two chances to do that. Vs Hawthorn, and vs Geelong. Tough ask, but we continue to struggle at Etihad, continue to struggle away from home, continue to struggle against Saints, North, Hawks, can't win in Perth, can't play consistently good football. So it's now down to two matches for Roos and his team to prove their worth, and it's two of the hardest tests in footy you could ask for.

A win against Hawthorn or Geelong and we're a top 6 side in 2017. Get smashed by both and nothing will change.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic but, if not, why does it not count? It's just nonsense.

  13. Muscle memory is key for goal kicking.

I'm more of a basketballer nowadays, but in my mid-30s I've been using the same routine literally every time I shoot a free throw since I was about 10.

It works for me, and has for that long.

So hard to fathom why you'd do that (edit: bite someone, not call your son Myke, though that is hard to fathom too).  Definitely deserves the book thrown - not cool.

Haven't seen Oliver that angry before.  Not much hint of the laughing kid from the country.  Reckon he'll be a pretty scary unit when he has shed the baby face.

He was pretty friggin' mad, and for a long time in that footage too. Lots of very, very angry pointing and shouting....

He is wrong, because the master of "nuance" has totally missed the whole point behind why Frost was playing forward...

I don't think he has at all.

Just because we all get the 'point' of it, doesn't mean it wasn't stupid.

Drop Roos an email and let him know then. I'm sure he'll shudder at the feared opinion of "ProDee".

Best to keep the snark for when PD is wrong, I reckon....

Yet to be convinced that basketball is a good comparison. 7 on court v 18 on field, 12 on roster v 22. Adding one gun player to a basketball team makes a much bigger difference than it does to an AFL team. Other posters have made this point on demonland before and I think it's a good one to take on board.

He did make that exact point.

North have always been an enigma with how they are still towards the bottom of the food chain with crowds/members/fans. They had some seriously dominant and successful periods in the 90s and early 00s when AFL coverage was increasing more and more but never built on it. The most successful thing they did, marketing wise, was pushing for and building the success of the Friday night slot. The AFL eventually took that over spread it out and then of course gifted it to the big clubs (even when they aren't successful).

I really dislike Harvey as a player but respect his abilities and his longevity. He is still a cut above at times (ask the MfC squad from Hobart earlier this year), North are still very reliant on him which is a credit to him and a discredit the club because he can't hang around forever!

But for how long he's been playing he has seen so many changes to the competition and game styles. Would probably be a very good read his book.

    Brent Harvey's book:

    'Me by Brent Harvey

Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me.

    The End.'
