Farewell Luke Jackson
It's highly unlikely that LJ would nominate for the pre-season draft ... can't see it He's coming off a flag, is well liked, we want to keep him and would pay him well. And he's certainly not disgruntled with the club It can't be assumed that North or the Eagles are prepared to pay big money on spec. Their offers may be about the same as what our offer is ($$$'s per annum over X amount of years) So if the big offer is from Freo only (which seems more likely) then we either get a deal done with them or he'll stay for at least 2 years But Freo might do everything possible to get a deal done I can see the club winning either way ... we get lots back for LJ or he stays

Farewell Luke Jackson
Good post There's no doubt that Cameron is a better player than Jackson right now, but ultimately, Jackson could prove to be a better player than Cameron (from an overall perspective) But it's length of service which is the big factor as well ... whoever might get Jackson might have him for close on 14-15 years at (possibly) B+ level. Where as Cameron almost certainly won't play any more than about 7 years (max?) for Geelong Sort of reminds me of the swapping of Wayne Schwass & Shannon Grant trade Grant played 11 years at North whilst Schwass only played 4.5 years at Sydney. So North won out of that deal (if it was a straight swap) I'm basing my scenario on Jackson definitely becoming a B+ player soon enough. Could be wrong of course but if we undervalue him (which I don't reckon we will) we could lose out in a trade But there again, it's the sum of all the parts with regards to one off season of trading ... and often we won't know how a trade turns out until a few years later When we swapped pick 2 for Tyson & Salem it did look for a while that GWS might have won that trade But Salem is a gun and Tyson gave us 4 reasonable years and then we ended up trading him (in a roundabout way) for Preuss who we then traded for a pick which we used to secure Ben Brown That's a win As for Jackson, he's not necessarily out the door anyway. There's a good chance he will remain with us especially if a deal can't be done. I'm reasonably confident that there is an offer on the table from elsewhere (probably Freo)

Farewell Luke Jackson
When faced with a loss it's natural for many here to mark down his ability & potential But we saw a real glimpse of his ability against the Lions ... suddenly he was the main man which eventuated in 22 disposals, 9 tackles and 18 hit outs. I'm sure Freo were watching too Agree with your post, PSD

The Run Home
Might be 11-1 if we only count 2nd Semi Finals & GF's. Might be 13-2 but it's still an imposing record any way you slice it Back in the day they must have hated us something chronic. We absolutely owned them It's any wonder their members stand erupted in glee when news came through that the Demons had missed the finals (last round 1976 as touched upon by @Anti-Saint) I was there that day and have hated them ever since

The Run Home
And we have beaten Collingwood in 14 of the last 15 times we have met them in a final An extraordinary record and a record which all Collingwood supporters need to know about

NON-MFC: Round 20, 2022
The game is so much better without countless players staging for frees Result - open footy, more attacking footy and more scoring opportunities Less congestion as the players need to keep moving the ball on instead of looking to get a soft free kick ... less stoppages as well The game at the MCG produced 29 goals ... what's not to like? High contact, soft, frivolous free kicks are no more (in a general sense) and the players have been well and truly sent a message Players being fined retrospectively for staging is a great move too

How Geelong Stays Competitive
The Cats stand in our way of consecutive premierships The've reinvented themselves and have obviously learnt a lot from last year's preliminary final They have quality players across all lines and now play a form of total defence Their win against us is the best win of the season (given the stakes, 1 vs 2 etc) ... our 2 wins against the Lions & Freo would be next in line or at least in the top 5 wins for the season Our match committee will not be underestimating the Cats as we will have learnt a lot from our loss to them However, our best beats their best but we need to bring our best when we play them next

Farewell Luke Jackson
Except Cameron was a lot older than LJ when he was traded ... so there's length of service at the new club to be factored in. And that's quite significant But the thrust of your argument is quite sound, Colm I'd be wanting more back even though LJ is not in the same bracket as Cameron (yet) A 6 year deal elsewhere for LJ would take him to age 26/27 ... so if he turns up trumps he's got (potentially) another 6 or 7 years after that contract If LJ gets to B+ status or better elsewhere, that effectively means he plays elsewhere at that level for 13 or 14 years. Players play longer these days That's got to be worth a good deal for us coming back our way, all things considered We need to be acting like real estate agents ... get the maximum return! (That is of course if LJ is on the move ... a stalemate looming is another outcome)

Farewell Luke Jackson
I don't begrudge LJ wanting to move for money (and to go home) but at the same time we don't want to lose him. There's a decent chance he will blossom into a star (has all the attributes) But I expect the club to play hard ball especially if his future salary elsewhere is in the top bracket Paying big money = quite a sizeable trade value We have a recruiter with the midas touch but even so, drafting is flawed and you don't always get what you want. Busts happen as a matter of course despite all the good intentions I'd want 3 picks inside the top 20 Something like picks 5, 10 & 18. That should just about do it unless there is some established talent attached to a trade So can Freo come up with the goods? With some creative & exhaustive trading they can but both clubs (Demons & Freo) might already know how it's all going to work out

The Soccer thread
Charity Shield on at 2am Man City vs Liverpool to be played at Leicester (Wembley is booked for the Women's Euro Final tomorrow ... England vs Germany) Currently watching Atletico Madrid vs Man Utd friendly from Oslo, Norway! Man Utd went down 1-0 after a late winner from Felix Earlier, Arsenal put 6 past Seville in another friendly ... Jesus scored a hat trick (he gets around a bit)

2022 Commonwealth Games (Birmingham)
Thanks for posting up the schedule @MadAsHell... much appreciated! I'm recording it all daily and then watching later on but very busy at work so finding the time is tricky Watched the cycling & swimming finals held through the night and we had a big day ... the highlight might have been the Women's 200m Freestyle Final. Terrific finish Ariarne & Elijah are just world class but nice to see Mack Horton get a medal. Stubblety-Cook as well was just too good in the 200m Breaststroke final Kyle Chalmers & Emma McKeon were fabulous in the relay The Women's pursuit team in the cycling were dominant as well Great to see the paralympians performing in these games as well. True recognition

My 3 word player analysis V Fremantle
So we had all the above see time in the backline (Langdon quite often drifts back as a link player around half back - to good effect) Brayshaw also helped out down back when needed. In soccer terms he'd be described as a defensive midfielder tonight but he did gain a lot of metres for the team (with well placed kicks) Hunt got amongst it even though his disposal was a bit iffy ... did enough to stay in the side (Harmes will come back though) Still reckon Hunt is at his best when he gets the chance to work in conjunction with Langdon - happened a few times tonight. That duel pace attack would worry the opposition Freo scored 5.9 so the backmen should be given a lot of credit (which is what you've done) My 3 word analysis 'Defence Wins Championships'

Melbourne & Mark Neeld: It Wasn’t All Bad
Neeld was out of his depth as a coach but we had a very ordinary list and the club itself had any number of issues So I'm loath to just blame one person. CS was seen as a below average CEO and of course was replaced before Neeld (by PJ) But if Neeld was chiefly responsible for the acquisition of Jason Taylor then kudos to him We've got a lot to thank Taylor for and one could argue that he is our most important appointment from 2012 onwards. MVP? He'd go close He's a gun recruiter who is arguably the best in the business. Got the Midas touch

POSTGAME: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
What are you talking about? Brayshaw was great tonight ... on his left a lot as that's where the space was Opposition players are drawn to his right side kicking and are then caught out Time and time again And then Brayshaw kicked deep to advantage or safety. He was a driving force all night How about giving credit where credit is due

POSTGAME: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
I agree The McClelland Trophy is up for grabs! In all seriousness, after tonight, why can't we finish on top? We can certainly win our last 3 but we need the Cats to slip up

POSTGAME: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
I suppose we could say we unloaded on Freo I'll see myself out

GAMEDAY: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
Locking the game down in the last quarter ... that's what we do. And it doesn't hurt our percentage. In fact we're up to close on 132 from about 129 (percentage) Freo have scored 38 points ... we're 84 Our all over defence is back We've played like winners all night

GAMEDAY: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
Petracca, Viney & Brayshaw - 70 touches all up That Brayshaw left foot hooked kick towards the boundary gaining 40 or 50 is an interesting ploy ... and it's worked well

GAMEDAY: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
Jake!! We are on tonight ... different team right from the word go

GAMEDAY: Rd 20 vs Fremantle
As was the Kossie free kick But you take the good with the bad Clark doesn't get one but that wasn't a free anyway. He ducked I wouldn't pay any of them ... they are all soft but look worse

Head high tackles
Your good self, Andy, P-man, chook and a few others keep us well informed, layz Need more footy actual input though ... lots more! Scores would be handy sometimes
-
Head high tackles
You are right and I agree with what you've said there Anyway, it's going to be very interesting to see how they go about policing the new high tackle rule In my view they (the umps) are going to make some errors (forced mistakes) but we need to look at the overall ... i.e. take the good with the sometimes bad Good reply LaDee

Head high tackles
Without people like you there I wouldn't bother with it (game day thread) Keep up the good info as I can often only listen in to our games (replay watching later) But even I'm not game enough to take on the umpire lambasters on the game day thread ... I just scroll past or put them on ignore And they never make any comments about the actual game. Which is quite odd
-
Head high tackles
What do you reckon @layzie Are the umpires cheating? If not, can you do us all a favour and go on to the game day thread (as you've done here) and point out that the umpires do not cheat You and @La Dee-vina Comedia I look forward to seeing your comments and thanks in advance!! haha So the players aren't cheating but the umpires are? Is that right?
