MFC's Foreign Legion
What a great read. Many astute observations. Thanks for getting the conversation going Optimus D. Went to school with Jamie Duursma. He was a very ordinary player back then. So I have enormous respect for him as it must have taken a huge amount of work to play one VFL game . . . let alone carve out a very respectable career. BTW . . . I think he was the first player, and possibly the only one, to play for all three east coast capital city clubs. Quite an achievement indeed! I remember watching Graham Gaunt as a teenager. He carved up the Royal Parade Cheats on the MCG one day in a brilliant display. Overall though . . . our foreign legion has been more miss than hit it must be said.

Serong/Pickett trade
Clearly we’ve stuffed it up again Osilik. You’re on the money. We don’t need 10 years to observe the career paths of both players to make a call on this one.

What they're saying down at Lakeside Drive
Max Gawn just had two weeks off. Has anyone ever had triple figures in hit outs? Do you really want to debut Amartey against Gawn? Everything else Melbourne have won 4 of their last 5. They've got 5 midfielders who are at the top of their games in Petracca, Viney, Gawn, Oliver and Langdon (the last of whom has really come in the last month) as well as Steven May who is a dominant force at FB now. Good test against an experienced, in form side but I don't have us as an impossible bet in this. If we bring our intensity again we can trouble Melbourne who are not consistent or reliable yet in my mind. We will get smacked!! Keep it within 4 goals and that's a win for us. Melbourne are seriously average with their two way running and defensive pressure. Our guys who like to run will have a field day with all the time and space the Dees will afford them. With the Hawks furiously tanking, Pick 3 is in jeopardy. I can’t see us winning another game with the games ahead. It’s the kind of game that the hapless Demons tend to stuff up with monotonous regularity. Melbourne if they are half decent should see this week as a bit of a percentage booster unfortunately for us. Melbourne are not that good, but we're definitely worse. If we stay in the game for the first half I think they'll get scared. Melbourne besides poor performances against the Bulldogs and the Power have been very competitive in most games this year. They are clearly the better side, but imo, are weak as [censored]. Lucky to beat St Kilda and beat up teams worse than themselves. We are worse but are not as weak, so if we can stay in the fight and not get blown away, Melbourne can definitely lose it for us. Melbourne are soft as, just pretenders.. Can definitely win this.. I'd love nothing more if our boys beat them and stuffed up finals for them.. If we're in it at half time (either <12 points down) i reckon we'll win. It is Melbourne after all. Interested to see how Fritsch goes - he might be in Red & White next year.

Forgotten Demons
FWIW . . . Frost's stats are certainly no better in 2020 than 2019. As I have said elsewhere over the last two-three years . . . Whorethorn are in a world of pain. They have a very bleak 10 years in front of them. Sam should continue to get a game there for the rest of his career.

Nathan Jones in 2021?
I can hear all the naysayers getting on this thread and winging and bitching about alleged form lapse, win-at-all costs, gifting games . . . . . blah, blah, blah. Absolutely pathetic. I hear about club culture and how pathetic our culture is every other day on this forum. The man is an all time great of the club. Will not make a team of the century, but a heart and soul player in an era of absolute clustering f*&%$ing. And club cultures are built around players who are warriors, never take a backward step, never need to be dropped for being late to training. These are called standards. High standards make organisations great. Jones had been our standard bearer for 14 years. For the next 50 years, when the Deez bring impressionable young recruits into the club, we want to be able to point a players like Jones and say . . . . "this is what it means to be a Dee". Loyal, fierce and a great human being. Clubs are built on the exploits of greats who struggled to 300 games. Bourke, Newman, Moore, Breen, Scott, Bartel and of course our own David Neitz. Let's not f#%& ourselves again and leave a guy who is on 290 something games, sacrificed on some misguided belief he doesn't deserve a game. He deserves the games between now and 300 because it's what builds culture, loyalty, leadership and the aura of frères d'armes. Let's not be the club that elevates some wacky, fundamentalist, pop-phycho belief over culture and loyalty. Jones needs to get to 300 games, not for Nathan, but for the long term good of the MFC. (And finally, there are still powerful forces in Sydney that to this day regret leaving 'The Tilt', a similar style of player to Nathan, on 293 games.)

Trac's Last Goal
Kane Cornes . . . Doesn’t understand the laws of the game Obsessed with his own image Has a cross hanging in the background Doesn’t watch the games he comments on Contradicts himself every week Vacuous, fatuous and asinine . . . sprouts out the last thought that crosses his mind Complete and absolutely no idea of the 2020 game and the way it’s played

Trac's Last Goal
FWIW . . . there is not one post on the St. Kilda boards (that I could find) where their supporters were commenting on the goal. It's as if it didn't happen.

What they're saying down at Linton Street
Post game . . . what they are saying about us. Trak There was people during the week defending the decision to take paddy over petracca. Don't tell me it doesn't happen I've seen it more times than I can count. Petracca believes in himself more than any player I've seen in a long time, and that belief that he is can be great and can be the difference between winning and losing makes up for rather significant deficiencies in his skillset. Petracca’s final goal turned like Warnie’s ball to Mike Gatting. May and Pettraca won them the game. Petracca was just an average player up until this year, don't think many saw him exploding into the player he is this season. Saints got it wrong and everyone knew he was going to be the better footballer but they drafted the player they thought would be our full forward for 15 years. As a caterey member of the western bulldogs who is dating a saints supporter. I promised her I would ask her why the hell our CEO Ameet Baines decided on drafting McCartin > Petracca. Can’t believe it. They weren't sure who to take because of our key forward situation and were then spooked by the Tom Boyd deal. Looks horrible in hindsight but still stand by it being the right call for St Kilda at the time. Everything else Melbourne played a very poor man's version of the geelong keepings off/block the corridor style. I hate losing to Melbourne more than any team. And that loss last night was more than losing to that borderline rabble but confirmation that we haven't improved and continue to crumble as soon as the prospect of us taking that step forwards arrises. If melbourne do a typically Melbourne and get ahead of themselves then thats great for us. Dees while hard at it, were not quality tonight. The majority of our goals were from Melbourne mistakes not our own ball movement. I can't believe we lost to f*n melbourne. Disaster. Considering how sh*t we played, it’s funny we were still the better team and lost. Thank god we’re not Melbourne supporters and have to watch that sh*t every week. May is 143 game 28 year old who should be in the prime of his career age wise so you would expect him to win that battle every day of the week. Melbourne set themselves for this game. If they hadn't of got Gawn right physically we scrape home I think. A very ordinary player in Mitch Brown slotting one from 50 on a tight angle. Melbourne deserve some credit for clogging the game up and not allowing us to run and gun. Now the boys have to get on the same flight as melb let that fu** that. Good hope they sing their song all the way back. Hope Oliver kicks the backs of their seats the whole way and Max Gawn puts his seat back on their legs. We've got a bloke named Carlisle. He's kicked a few goals in his time. He is bigger than May, perhaps he could have stood his ground and taken a bit of the focus off King? Melbourne. Trash team dragging us down to their level. We made May look like Rance. Our list is still well below even Melbourne and is a patchwork of crap coving serious structural issues. May with 22 disposals and 9 marks. Gave us an absolute bath. King deserves a rest. It's his first year at AFL level, so he deserves some slack, but he needs a rest. He's been poor for a few weeks, poor decision making and poor marking. He'll get better, but we don't need to try and burn him out like when Melbourne ruined Jack Watts. Gawn not called once for tackling the Saints ruckman all night, thought 2 arms around was a big indicator. King will have nightmares about May. We needed to do something about that match up a lot earlier, pretty much lost us the game. Well done to Melbourne, totally burnt us on the rebound and had our number. Melbourne are sh*t Kents good luck to them. Melbourne have no game plan and beat us.

The Choice: Christian Petracca or Paddy McCartin

What they're saying down at Linton Street
Max Seriously though stop petracca Oliver and Gawn and they have nothing. Marshall record on Gawn is actually good. Ryder won’t win hits outs against Gawn. Gawn doesn’t pose the same threat as precious years. Ryder and Marshall should be able to nullify him or even work him over. He isn’t a physical ruckman. Max Gawn back in is obviously huge for them but he has played the last few times we have beaten them too and we are stronger in the ruck this year. Everything else The brothers going at it in the midfield will be interesting. I assume Zak Jones has the upper hand on Nathan in games won given Sydney would have been a better team over the course of the last few years. Jones gives them a definite psychological lift and a bit more grunt. Tipping Max King to kick 7 and Steven May to punch himself in the head. I love jake carlisle, he always can [censored] off the oppositions fans and is one of us, Bloke will win a norm smith for us if we reach a grand final. Bit of a power play by us to name Kent at ruck rover against the dees. Melbourne are full of heads that you look at and just think they need a punch in the nose. Wow and just read Fritsch missed the start of training and that's why he's dropped. They're in all sorts. Geez they have some very ordinary footballers in that 22. They really drop off after there top 6 or 7 players. Dee's changes benefit us I reckon. Lost a lot of speed and defense. And have a very tall backline. Key will be to keep Lever occupied though as he runs lose when O.McDonald plays and also have Tomlinson play back atm. Mitch Brown not really a bonafide key forward though is he? Think he plays like more of a tall flanker Fritsch our for Melbourne I thought he was the only one that kicked any goals for them They’ve been playing Harmes out of position all years, very weird. Nat Jones is s*** yet he gets midfield minutes instead of Harmes. I reckon harmes is forward mid. Maybe petracca has been the issue. Issue is that they have Brayshaw, Oliver, Jones, Viney, Petracca, Harmes all wanting midfield minutes but arent much good on the outside. Petracca handy fwd but has been killing it in the middle. Tom McDonald dropped is a blow to our chances, he's a liability for them up forward. Fritsch dropped helps us though as he's one of their better forwards. Is harmes one of those Kents that we make look like Leigh Mathews? Goodwin playing a hail mary, line in the sand card at selection by the looks. For the record, James Harmes last 5 games vs St.Kilda = 113 touches and 10 goals. We are his bunnies. WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K???????

The short answer is “it depends”. On shear football ability, he would easily be in our best 22.

My 3 word player analysis V Footscray
This . . . Almost seven completed years into a rebuild and we have two finals wins to our name with a pretty good list. I must be missing sometime obviously.

Dan Butler
I must admit having thought the same thing last year. I assumed he had injury or 'other' problems for there to be such a low, industry-wide, interest in him. Inexplicable and unexplainable.

What they're saying down at Barkly Street
Post game Can’t believe the ruck tactic didn’t hurt us. Just shows how poor Preuss is, thank god Gawn wasn’t ready to come back. He’d have made us pay. Melbourne are so sh*t. Jeez our 2018 draft is looking better by the day. Thought it was going to be an arm wrestle for 4 quarters but serious credit to Bevo on out coaching Melbourne in the second half. Like the look of Preuss. He could play first ruck for us. English didn’t play in the middle for the entire second half. When Bevo was interviewed at half time on Fox you could tell he was ready to get into the rooms and sort some things out. Bevo is still on track for a flag from 8th on his resume. We are a better team than Melbourne even though they look great on paper. Lipinski had the most pressure applied to his touches and went at 90 something percent, best against a Melb player was Trac and he went at 50 percent. I am still a Gardner-loather. Did some ok things but nearly gave Weiderman and McDonald their Majak medals. Fortunately for us if there is one side worse than us at butchering The ball and making poor decisions, it’s Melbourne.

- What they're saying down at Barkly Street
That's what I would have thought. But have you checked the property prices in Footscray lately?- My 3 word player analysis V Footscray
Petracca - coach killing him Brayshaw - one way footballer Oliver - talent not maximised Fritsch - reliably erratic again Hibberd - replace with Rivers Lever - not what purchased May - value for money McDonald - plateaued at average Weideman - doesn't deliver consistently Langdon - good opposition exposed Tomlinson - good depth player Melksham - absolutely no leadership Pickett - man love today Lockhart - worth persisting with Viney, VDB, Harmes - same, same, same Hannan - swap for Bevo Spargo - doesn't kill opposition Sparrow - development progressing slowly Preuss - very disappointing performance Salem - disappointing under pressure Coaches - absolutely no imagination Head coach - Put on Jobseeker Bevo - Melbourne should get- What they're saying down at Barkly Street
There is a pub in Footscray charging $100 for a steak. I kid you not.- What they're saying down at Barkly Street
Thank god that Max Gawn isn’t playing otherwise it would be a blood bath but Preuss is still not a bad ruckman who is very strong. Gawn is significant but our ins are better. Tom Mcdonald hasnt done anything for two years. I'm sure Gardner will be nice and help him recapture that 2018 form where he kicked 7 goals in those two games against us. Pruess will eat English up and we will struggle again out of the centre in my view. If Petracca is drilling it out of the centre to McDonald it could be a long painful game where we get behind quickly. I don’t rate melbourne at all. We should win. Keath to the in form Weideman please. Not Gardner. I am worried about Gardner being in the team he will not get it as easy as last week when our midfield dominated. Tom Macdonald will be sleeping easy tonight. May has tightened up this year, Lever you can get a hold on, Bruce just needs to be accountable and naughts will destroy whos left. Keen to see Preuss against English. Surely will dominate the taps with strength but Timmy will win in impact around the ground. Melbourne's high performance manager Darren Burgess remains confident the 206cm ex-Kangaroo will be available to take on the Bulldogs, but he will be monitored ahead of Saturday's game. Looking forward to Bruce dominating this week if picked, as it sounds like all that was missing for him to tear games apart was Naughton beside him. May isn't slow, but Naughton has him covered for agility. Really small turning circle for a tall. The ultimate battle between the league's best ''flat track bullies''. I dont think Melbourne are good but I don't trust us at all. Melbourne are weak as [censored]. Richmond absolutely toyed with them. I like the idea of Lever on Naughton. Lever has been really poor pretty much his entire tenure at the Dees. Naughton I think has both May and Lever covered. May is more suited to Bruce but Lever on Naughton is a nightmare for Melbourne. Melbourne are a good developing side - they are awesome when you don't match their intensity in the middle - but the don't always appear to have much else if they aren't dominating centre square. If they get it in quick to McDonald, Weideman and Fritsch, then they could have a field day. Remember McDonald kicked 4 or 5 against us one game and Fritsch took 14 marks. If we bomb it, I’m confident May and Lever will counteract Naughton. Surely having our best two players - both better than anyone on Melbourne's list - in cracking form will be enough to tip the balance in our favour? Their midfield matches ours ok (now that Brayshaw is getting back to form) with ours batting one "good" mid deeper. I don't rate Melbourne at all. Our midfield is superior to their's and we will have a field day. Sure Oliver and Petraca have done well but against who? The Bont and Macrae racked up 70 disposals against Brisbane who have a very good midfield, and as you say who is going to stop Naughton? - What they're saying down at Barkly Street
