I agree that Oliver is being ‘transformed’ but my take is a little different in that he will be a better player than he already is as he feels more loved, and valued as the person he is warts and all.

One aspect of the transformation is he always shunned the limelight.

    But look at him now!

    • Chosen to model our ANZAC jumper – a great honour and implicitly equating him with the ANZAC spirit:  Courageous, mate ship, sacrifice.  Oliver has those in spades.
    • Recently he has conducted several postgame interviews even when not BOG and has embraced the role of representing the club with humility and courage.   His confidence is growing with the media showing him respect and love.  They are implicitly saying no one cares about his past foibles.
    • His self belief as a person is noticeably growing.

My sense it is a deliberate strategy by the AFL, the club and the media.  If so, kudos to them all.

I’m loving watching Oliver mature as a person and come what may in his football I have little doubt he will be in a better place generally.

Like you, just seeing him happy brings me joy.

    Reflection of the year. Beautiful.

  2. Clarry can be seen regularly having a chat to the player closest to him - Demon or not. I've always wondered what he's saying. Be pretty random I think. Recon it could be something like these:

    • The wind has really sprung up - good for you guys
    • Where did you guys get that number 21 from - he can play?
    • Do you understand all the ads on the scoreboard?
    • Did you hit the traffic snarl on Swan street coming in?
    • You recon all the balls are the same pressure today?

Disco’s third goal was largely due to the skill and professionalism of the person in the cheer squad holding the target. 😁

Redemption for her dreadful error in last year’s round 22 match vs Carlton where she held the target up between the goal and behind posts. She thought she’d never again be asked to hold up the target. But her comrades backed her in and she didn’t let them down.

Now to work towards getting her giant flag licence back, which should be soon. I mean, it’s not like she took anyone’s eye out.

I've known for a long time you were worth targeting @WalkingCivilWar. You have nothing to prove.

    Thanks Captain Obvious Jenkins.

Play him down back or play him at Casey. We are not good enough to carry a player who is a net negative.

Even assuming your assessment is accurate (which it's not), we were last night.

  5. I asked chatGPT this question: how hopeless is rory lobb?

It seems like you might be expressing some frustration or disappointment regarding Rory Lobb, who is known as an Australian rules football player. He's had his ups and downs in performance like many athletes, but describing him as "hopeless" might not fully capture his abilities and contributions to the sport. Lobb has been recognized for his versatility on the field, particularly due to his height and ability to play both forward and in ruck positions. His career has included notable stints with teams like the GWS Giants and Fremantle Dockers, where he has had impactful games.

  6. Throw one of the bowls in the kitchen sink at him. He's at a dud club with no systems. I watch Norf most weeks and Cable, Blight and Archer would be struggling to look good at Arden street at the moment. If Norf want two find rounders, and considering we are a good chance to finish top four in '24 and 25, I would seriously consider the deal. For them it means picks - say 15 and 14. Recon that would be a good deal for them, as these can be bundled up for a top six pick, OR spent on a couple of talls for down back. He not trackta or Oliver, but a brilliant chop out for these guys. This means, potentially, extending the careers of these guys by a year or two.

There's a shed load of up side in this for us.

I don't think I'm being optimistic FD. I think I'm being realistic and objective.

Its a cliche that it's a long season because its true.

The media love to pretend that every game is of critical importance and every result is some sort of bellweather for team's chances of winning a flag (or making top 4, or finals, or wooden spoon etc etc).

    They're not.

If they were, then last week the only conclusion that could be reached is that the blues have no chance of winning a flag given they were beaten by a winless, and decidedly average, crows outfit. Or does only this weeks result count?

And what of the giants? Everybody's darlings and flag pick. They were cruising, 20 points up halfway through the third and caved, conceding a 7 goal turn around in a quarter and a half. No longer a contender?

The swans were similarly lauded after starting the season with terrific wins over the dees, pies and bombers. Such stunning ball movement. Such brilliant kicks. Gulden is a kicking God. Heeney a midfield genius. Then they get beaten by the tigers. Not a contender any more?

They also love to pretend each game is played in isolation, a game in a bubble unmoored from other considerations (schedule, byes, high performance programs, how teams match up with specific opponents, injuries, trialling new roles or strategies, conditions etc etc).

    They're not.

Each individual game, particularly in the first half of the season, is a piece of a larger puzzle. A step towards the final prize.

Its about winning the battle, not the wars.

    100 percent this.

Case study 1: Lloyd. Every week he has a new premiership winning tip, decision on who's not good enough and who's the best player in the comp. The last thought that passed through his brain is today's truth.

Case study 2: Cornes . . . because why let reality ruin a perfectly outrageous headline?

Everyone else: Walking around like they know what they're doing - but in reality - really good actors in a show called "Guessing Our Way Through Adulting."

My god, can they just put a webcam in a pub somewhere and let some drunks argue. Same quality of analysis.

Great to see an apology to Michael Christian for criticising the MRO. Why do they feel the need to apologise for having a crack at them.

Loved Cornes logic. He's taken his eyes off the ball to look at his opponent, so he has to go and then in the same breath says, the rules have changed, so players need to take care not to injure their opponent.

How do you do that if you can't take your eyes off the ball?

Sounds like they'll need to give him a week because they should have suspended Maynard and shouldn't have suspended Wright (or at least not for 4 weeks)

AFL ties itself in more knots than a knitting circle.

Media opinion will drive the outcome as usual.

Maybe players should be made to shout "look out" before entering a contest 😜

Very, very tuff on the drunks @Brownie. The first place I go for good analysis is a pub. The second place is Demonland. The absolute last place I go is the mainstream media.

    Really?

You can't take much from the cats lions game given the conditions, and def not that they are ahead of us.

Carlton played well, but defensively were average, giving up nearly a hundred points.

They were slight favourites to win that game, unsurprising given it was in Melbourne. And so the win was hardly a shock.

To be honest, despite losing, the giants worry me more.

The pies got rolling, and good on them. But they also looked shakey defensively and they benefited from ports absolutely woeful defence (im shocked port didn't make changing their defensive system a condition to agree to resign hinkley - they will never win a flag with their current defensive method).

I was with some Port supporters last night @binman. They aren't too keen on Hinkley. I defended him on the basis that he hasn't ever been given the cattle to go into the last Saturday in September. Outside of Robbie Grey, I can't think of one superstar they have had in 10 years. Boak is an A Grader, but not a superstar. He's actually been handed horrendous lists. And I contend, that at a minimum, you need three SS to get you to a granny, let alone a premiership.

The kids is blown up like he is super human. Has only played a half dozen. Have seen too many fizzle out or plateau .
Granted he looks the goods but given him at least 2 seasons. WC still have some bottoming out to do. Kelly, Yeo, Darling, Cripps, Sheed, McGovern …. They are some big roles to fill.

I think their expectation is that he'll only play three of those positions on any given day.

The AFL has the downfield rule wrong. There’s an incentive to push a player in the back as they are kicking. It’s gives your defence time to set up.

    It makes no sense.

The problem is yours @The heart beats true. Thinking 'AFL' and 'sense' can be used in the same post is delusional.

Port don’t have talent behind the ball. They’ve got size, but no natural footballers. Ratugolea, Aliir, Zerk-Thatcher - they all look like big blokes, and they can all do athletic things, but the basics allude them too often. Collingwood’s theory here is just bang it in and one of them will panic, and it’s working.

Reminds me a bit of Jim Jess in the 80's. Couldn't do anything with two feet on the ground.

Would you want your product, associated with the ire of supporters around the country whom you are supposed to be courting? But in the end I guess the marketing take would be - don't care about the 95% of people you [censored] off, care about the 5% you convert. Are there any marketing guru's on here?

Both Crypto and the sore review system are dodgy. So they deserve each other. And I suspect Crypto was the only sponsor the AFL could find for this horrendous cluster-^&*# of a technology. And as the AFL is a complete bunch of Marty Hores, even the dollars of immoral products get a share of the airtime.

That HTB against Draper at the finish is not clear cut as it might first look.

Watch how Tex hurls himself into Draper's back. It's potentially a free to Draper as well, but what the incident highlights is the really crummy tactic of jumping on a player to lock the ball in. Why is that rewarded when at any other time we look down on teams playing for frees? In any case it's not clear from the vision that it is Draper who pulls the ball in. Hilarious to see Tex mouthing off at the finish.

I just wish the umpires had the strength to umpire against the crowd when we're playing the Crows over there. They have cost us two wins in the last few years with cowardly non-decisions or outright blunders.

It's virtually incomprehensible to me how:

    1. the AFL struggle to recruit and keep officials to umpire suburban and country footy, yet
    2. do not sanction behavior such as Walker's.

It was threatening and abusive. At a minimum it was a free kick and 50 metres. Crows win game by three points. At worst, it's a one week holiday. Pathetic custodians of the game IMHO.

I'm heading along to the Pies Power game tommorrow, (I know, wish me luck) Not usually one to attend non MFC games but with a weekend bye, I'm gonna do it.. Torn against who I want to win however, one the one hand Collingwood hatred says, anytime Collingwood lose is a positive, on the other hand a Power win puts a gap between us and them... help me please

Port every time @danielE288. Five good reasons:

    1. Hinkley's not a bad bloke (even though his pres is a complete @#$%).
    2. Who doesn't like Trav Boak?
    3. If we finish top two and they finish third or fourth, we pull their pants down in the first week of the finals at the Temple.
    4. Filth sitting 2/6 is a delight to behold.
    5. And any result the AFL doesn't like is the result I do like.

Cant figure out if you are taking the [censored]. But to simplify this for all those concerned, if a team was to play every Sunday, at the conclusion of their third game they would have played 3 games in 14 days.

    Our first 6 games were:

    1: Thursday
    2: Sunday
    3: Saturday
    4: Saturday
    5: Thursday
    6: Thursday

So our breaks between games were 10 days; 6 days; 7 days; 5 days; 7 days. This is an average of 7 days breaks in the first 6 rounds.

What i will correct is that we have played 3 games in 12 days (not 13, which is what i and others have quoted). Making fatigue a more relevant factor but again, ill maintain that we have had sufficient recovery across the first 6 rounds. The 5 day break would have been a more relevant factor coming into the Adelaide game.

I see what you mean now @Gawndy the Great. Thanks for clarifying.

FWIW, I pay a fitness guru to train me twice a week. Sometime we fit in three sessions a week. The third session really takes its toll when I front up to the first session of the following week (hope that makes sense). Or to say it another way, I do not train with the same intensity level on the Monday of the second week, if I've trained three session in the first week. So I can see how clubs with extra loading as @binman alludes to sometimes can really struggle.

But 3 in 13 is one game almost every 7 days, which is the norm. I just don't see how one less day over two weeks results in what we saw on the park that night. 3 games in 11 is entirely another matter though. I know people want to find an excuse for our capitulation against the Lions that gives them some hope that the performance is outlier, but fatigue wasn't the sole and overriding factor IMO.

I went to a Catholic college for nine years - so maths isn't my strong suit. I checked my abacus and it reports that 3 into 13 is 4.3 recurring. Is there a prodo that can confirm this please?
