Presently the lowest rated player in the competition for season 2024 (Champion Data)* *Not having a go at HP. As i've said all season from the time he was brought in after 1 Casey game (zero impact), his comeback has been badly managed to say the least.

I've seen McAdam kick them three quarter goal post height from 50 at training with ease and that was weeks ago when he was still coming out of hammy recovery. You have to ask WTH is going on down there as they appear to be prepping reasonably well (as a guess) then turning up and unable to produce in most first quarters then [censored] the bed allover the park in other matches.

He's had 10 weeks to do that Sth... time is well and truly up plus if he plays anywhere near such a lowly level, even a slight bounce, he & we will probably be murdered (again) this week. Terrible player / strategic management from SG & the FD on this one so far.

Player Rating Review - Defenders Steven May (Key Defender 32yo 193cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Stonewall May has played approx 10.5 matches so far. Missing roughly half the match against the Hawks in Rnd 2 with a rib / back injury and the following round vs Port Power. A great start to the Premiership champ. Rating indicates all is well, however looks can be deceiving and so can the rating. Digging a tad deeper there may be a concern here with May. Anything contested appears to have dropped away vs 2023 and particularly in the 2nd part of this first half season post the rib / back injury. Contested possessions down approx one quarter vs his first 4.5 matches. Contested marks in his last 6 matches down a massive 75% vs the first 4.5 69% if you compare it to last season's average One percenters down 20% vs 2023 average Tackles down a hefty 68% vs 2023 Rebound 50s off 23% vs 2023 Intercepts also down 11% on 2023 His turnovers average has improved substantially on 2023 (down 46%). Even further if you consider his last 6 matches vs 2023 (52%). Is this at the cost of playing a short game or not having confidence to pull the trigger on medium passes though? Could he be restricted in some way that is not allowing him to kick through the ball and/or attack the contest / marking / intercepts / tackles? Maysie is a tough hombre. Is he cracking hardy and maybe masking an ongoing issue post the Rib / Back injury? Numbers would indicate this may well be the case. If so the bye might not come soon enough for the champ. Let's hope there's nothing in this or nothing too serious. #1 S May Rnds 0 to 5 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 4.7 3.5 -25.8 4.5 4.0 -11.2 Uncontested Poss 11.0 10.8 -1.6 8.4 10.9 29.4 Effective Disposals* 15.5 17.0 9.6 14.2 16.4 15.3 Disposal Effeciency % 88.7 84.7 -4.1 82.4 86.4 4.0 Contested Marks* 2.0 0.5 -75.3 1.2 1.1 -7.3 Marks inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - One Percenters* 6.7 5.2 -23.4 6.5 5.8 -10.5 Clearances* 0.0 0.2 - 0.1 0.1 - Rebound 50s* 5.8 4.8 -17.3 6.2 5.3 -15.6 Inside 50s* 0.9 0.5 -44.4 1.3 0.7 -49.8 Tackles* 1.6 0.5 -68.2 1.6 1.0 -40.9 Score Involvements* 2.7 3.2 17.4 2.0 3.0 44.9 Meters Gained 379.6 378.3 -0.3 407.3 378.9 -7.0 Turnovers* 2.9 2.2 -25.8 4.6 2.5 -46.1 Intercepts* 5.8 6.0 2.7 6.7 5.9 -11.6 Tackles Inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - Time On Ground % 93.3 93.7 0.4 97.1 93.5 -3.7 Goals* 0.0 0.2 - 0.0 0.1 - Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 3.7 3.8 2.2 3.2 3.8 17.4 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders Tom McDonald (Key Defender 31yo 195cm) Rnd 1 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 T-Mac has played 11 out of 12 games so far in 2024, only missing round 0. And of course has changed roles from KF to defence. Therefore a number of forward related metrics from 2023 are less relevant such as score involvements, tackles inside 50 & goals. The increase in his Player Rating from 2023 to 2024 is also a little flattering given defenders are usually clocking up a number of cheap stats at times. Nonetheless, a substantial improvement on his 2023 season. Started the season off very well. High accuracy with kicks and low turnovers. In the last 6 rounds however that appears to have dropped away somewhat with turnovers up approx 87% but coming off a low base. I wonder if that's a change in strategy at all with him being asked to take more risks going with slightly longer options and/or 45 attempts? Or could be just a drop off in form a little on the skills side? Champion would have that data of course. Macca also seems to be working on his contested side with a 36% jump here in his last 6 rounds. Bringing him back to his 2023 average. That seems a little too cute not to have been a target as part of his role in the last 6 rounds. Tackle averages are off dropping 30%. Not alarming by any means but 6 weeks of data is pretty robust indicating there is a trend. Would be interesting to put together a table of how players are trending with pressure. Although you would need to compare their averages with AFL average pressure points against similar role playing positions to have a serious idea of how they're traveling. Metrics which will probably never see the light of day (publicly). Note: Lever's table shows Rnds 7 to 10. That should read 7 to 9 as i did not include his paltry 7% game time in round 10 in his averages. #25 T McDonald Rnds 1 to 5 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 3.8 5.2 36.0 5.2 4.5 -12.0 Uncontested Poss 8.2 8.3 1.6 6.2 8.3 34.2 Effective Disposals* 10.4 10.8 4.2 7.8 10.6 35.8 Disposal Effeciency % 87.1 79.1 -8.1 77.9 82.7 4.9 Contested Marks* 1.0 1.2 16.7 1.0 1.1 9.1 Marks inside 50* 0.0 0.2 - 1.2 0.1 -92.2 One Percenters* 5.8 6.2 6.3 2.0 6.0 200.0 Clearances* 0.0 0.2 - 0.5 0.1 -81.8 Rebound 50s* 4.0 4.0 0.0 0.2 4.0 2300.0 Inside 50s* 1.2 0.7 -44.4 1.7 0.9 -45.5 Tackles* 2.4 1.7 -30.6 1.8 2.0 9.1 Score Involvements* 2.6 2.7 2.6 4.0 2.6 -34.1 Meters Gained 194.2 244.2 25.7 167.0 221.5 32.6 Turnovers* 1.6 3.0 87.5 2.2 2.4 9.1 Intercepts* 5.4 7.0 29.6 1.3 6.3 370.5 Tackles Inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.7 0.0 -100.0 Time On Ground % 98.8 96.2 -2.6 77.0 97.4 20.4 Goals* 0.0 0.3 - 1.3 0.2 -86.4 Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.3 0.0 -100.0 *DD's Player Rating 3.0 3.0 -1.4 2.1 3.0 45.2 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com

Wouldn't read much into the on track mood Mono. One of the weeks i attended training was before the Lions match and they were super vocal & and [censored]-o-hooping! I'm not sure it matters all that much TBH. A quietish session could mean they're fully focused and determined to get the job done or maybe unhappy about things!

Player Rating Review - Defenders Trent Rivers (Medium Defender 22yo 188cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Rivers set a high bar in 2023. That was always going to be hard to maintain. Started a little ways off that bar. He's improved in some areas but dropped away in others. Contested possessions & intercepts both down 25% on 2023. His last 6 matches would appear to indicate his form has dropped away even further than his opening 6 rounds. Although Meters gained is def on the up. Trying to be more attacking on the rebound or kicking it longer vs the first 6 rounds? I would really love to see Rivers trialed with some more mid field minutes from here IF we can cover him off with either Turner and/or Marty when he returns? When he came into the middle for Clarry against the Lions i thought he really gave us something. He may well be the extra rotation needed at this point and may benefit from the change up! #24 T Rivers Rnds 0 to 5 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 6.0 3.5 -41.7 6.3 4.8 -25.0 Uncontested Poss 11.8 15.5 31.0 13.5 13.7 1.2 Effective Disposals* 14.2 15.0 5.9 15.7 14.6 -7.1 Disposal Effeciency % 75.2 76.1 0.8 76.8 75.6 -1.2 Contested Marks* 0.3 0.3 0.0 0.7 0.3 -49.5 Marks inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.2 0.0 - One Percenters* 1.7 1.8 10.0 2.2 1.8 -18.8 Clearances* 1.7 0.5 -70.0 1.1 1.1 -1.5 Rebound 50s* 3.7 3.3 -9.1 4.0 3.5 -12.5 Inside 50s* 2.3 3.2 35.7 3.0 2.8 -8.0 Tackles* 2.0 1.7 -16.7 2.3 1.8 -19.8 Score Involvements* 4.3 3.3 -23.1 3.6 3.8 6.3 Meters Gained 333.7 410.5 23.0 393.9 372.1 -5.5 Turnovers* 3.2 3.7 15.8 3.2 3.4 6.4 Intercepts* 5.8 3.8 -34.3 6.6 4.8 -26.2 Tackles Inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.1 0.0 - Time On Ground % 82.2 78.7 -3.5 78.2 80.4 2.9 Goals* 0.0 0.0 - 0.1 0.0 - Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 3.4 3.0 -11.9 3.7 3.2 -14.1 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders Christian Salem (Medium Defender 28yo 184cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 10 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Salo played the first 5 rounds before ending up injured in the 6th* very early in the match vs the Lions with a hamstring. He returned six weeks later in Rnd 10 and has played three games in succession so far. We should keep this in mind when reviewing his results. He opened the season in very similar fashion / form to his 2023 season. Since his return from injury in Rnd 10 he appears to have ratcheted his game to another level. This is probably also indicative of his time spent in the mid field in certain matches. Running through the mid field a little appears to have resulted in more turnovers due to the increased pressure? His disposal efficiency has also improved substantially on 2023. However that may not be all positive if he is not taking many risks with his kicks etc and instead playing a little too safe too often with short easy 'pressure relieving' kicks that don't necessarily benefit the team or the style we are trying to implement. The one disappointing aspect since Rnd 10, pressure has gone south. Particularly tackles, down substantially. That could also be a positive meaning he is not chasing as much tail and instead getting to the ball first though. Numbers can be deceiving. My gut feel is that Salem's game in general is not attacking enough in terms of bursting out of stoppage / congestion. Or that when he does attempt to do so and/or try longer kicks, he is turning the ball over more often? And then reverts back to playing the safer but less effective (at times) short dinky sideways game. I could be wrong and just imagining things though. #3 C Salem Rnds 0 to 5# Rnds 10 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 5.9 7.3 23.9 6.1 6.4 4.9 Uncontested Poss 13.4 20.7 54.1 12.9 16.1 25.3 Effective Disposals* 13.6 21.0 54.3 13.3 16.4 23.1 Disposal Effeciency % 74.7 74.9 0.3 67.7 74.8 7.0 Contested Marks* 0.0 0.0 - 0.4 0.0 -100.0 Marks inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - One Percenters* 1.0 0.7 -32.4 1.0 0.9 -13.3 Clearances* 1.6 2.0 26.8 1.1 1.7 61.9 Rebound 50s* 3.2 3.3 5.6 3.4 3.2 -4.0 Inside 50s* 2.2 3.0 38.3 2.6 2.5 -3.6 Tackles* 3.7 1.7 -55.5 3.5 3.0 -15.0 Score Inv'ments* 3.7 3.7 -2.2 3.3 3.7 13.1 Meters Gained 368.6 405.0 9.9 315.8 382.2 21.0 Turnovers* 3.4 5.7 69.0 3.6 4.2 18.0 Intercepts* 2.8 3.7 32.8 4.7 3.1 -34.3 Tackles Inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.1 0.0 -100.0 Time On Ground % 79.9 79.7 -0.2 82.9 79.8 -3.1 Goals* 0.2 0.0 -100.0 0.0 0.1 - Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 3.0 3.6 19.2 3.0 3.2 6.6 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com

SOLUTIONS NEEDED. 2 JUNE 2024. Memo to Goody
Demon Dynasty replied to spirit of norm smith's topic in Melbourne Demons
That is correct Super. Our forward pressure game is presently almost non existent and a big reason why the rest of the lines are suffering. Our best pressure small forward is presently playing substantial minutes in the middle. Chandler is struggling also. Our KFs bar JVR don't bring it either and McAdam was (is?) a long way off the level physically as well. Might be better to have Turner try and play a fair chunk of Rivers' role. Allows Rivers to play a fair chunk in the middle. Just enough to reduce Kozzy's mid minutes to no more than roughly 20% and the other 80% doing what he does best inside 50. -
Not so far fetched. Garry 'Bull' Baker ('74' - '81') brought some house bricks to training on occasions and used to run laps with one in each hand After seeing this, my brother, myself and others in our mad grog squad group thereafter referred to him as 'Bricks' Baker!
-
Thanks Freeze. That might help to explain or partially explain his meek performance on the day.

Fullo had two reasonable games consecutively Dazzle. The Port match in Rnd 3 and then then the following against the Tigers you mentioned in Rnd 5 post the bye. I thought that might have put him in the selection window coming into the match against the Eagles ahead of Brown & Petty. But he didn't do much in his subsequent games following those in the lead up to the Eagles. Regardless, Goodwin continued on with a horribly out of form Petty for the Eagles and brought in Brown who also didn't do that much at Casey the week before imv. Certainly not enough to inspire that selection. Petty & Brown were both monumental failures against the Eagles with their ratings down 66% & 56% consecutively vs 2023 in that match and only 1 goal between them. Not saying Fullo wouldve made much of a diff but if you were going to trial him that was the opportune time, certainly ahead of both Brown & Petty imho. Just trial it. There waa nothing to lose and we lost comprehensively anyway. I did say this in the week leading into that match so this isn't in hindsight either. After not being selected for the Eagles (but was 'considered' as he was named in the emergencies), Fullo then injured his calf and was ineligible for the Saints. I doubt he would've been fit enough for Freo match. Hence they went with last resort .. Turner. Which also turned out to be a fail. We brought Fullo back to play Coburg last week but imho he looked hampered in that match (and or disinterested?) and had a poor match. Hopefully he will start to improve as he works his way through and out of calf niggle. Simon's brought in far too many players that simply weren't in decent form and lacking match fitness and gone back to the old well too many times. Petty is presently not even close to AFL and should've been kept at Casey for weeks until he showed he was ready. His one and only game at Casey was an absolute horror show but Goodwin still brought him straight in. Madness. I said this at the time and have been saying it consistently throughout the year. Mega mistake by the coach here. No team can carry such an out of form poorly perfoming player for months on end. Its a bad call all round for so many reasons. I said last week before Freo that at some stage such decisions (McAdam and Hunter who also didn't earn their spots based on their Casey performances) will probably come back to bite us. And it certainly has.

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders Judd McVee (Medium Defender 20yo 185cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Juddy has played all 12 matches so far in 2024. He's had a great start to the season with his overall rating up an impressive 29% from 2023 Only dropping off a little as the season's progressed by approx 7%. His positives given his role... rebounds, intercepts, meters gained and turnovers have all improved. In general terms his disposal efficiency is also up 5% on 2023. Of course it should be high given the position he's playing but a 5% improvement is still better than going south, especially given the inconsistency with some of our performances. I reckon Clarry's a bit off in terms of running capability from contest to contest along with what entails after that. When you get to that state against quality oppo or some heavy checking, your disposal, poise and decision making are going to be tested. Playing mid is obviously a taxing role and my belief would be that to play at his high level (prior to this season) most weeks you would need to come in to every season with a massive prep under your belt and not much going wrong. It would appear this was the case in his prior years. Same goes for any full time mid and especially the insiders like Clarry & Vines. Obviously that prep has not gone the way we (and i'm sure Claz & the FD) would have liked. At the same time he also had his finger issue in rounds 0 to 5. Post the bye that was supposedly fixed and in three of the last six matches Clarry has shown something. The only trouble is, in the other three he has been pretty shizen. I reckon that's probably the way it stays this season unfortunately. One week up, the next is a shiiite fest. Losing Gus and JJ has left us very exposed for rotations and depth as well. Combine that with Clarry's issues and this is possibly why Simon's looking for back up, attempting to play a number of non regular mids through the middle to see what they can bring. If we had the depth at Casey we'd no doubt be trialling them. One of those was Kolt but alas he probably wasn't quite ready. I would've liked to see him given one more consecutive week to see what he could bring. Instead he's back toiling it out at a struggling Casey outfit.

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 12, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023 This season's Team Rating is still holding up. Season is still potentially recoverable in terms of making finals but we'll need to get so much more out of the middling group and especially our bottom 6 players, whoever they are each week. And of course the mid field regulars who are up and down like a yo yo and be very selective about who else runs through there. Sparrow & Clarry a fair way off this season plus Viney for a few rounds after the Crows has really impacted. My suggestion for some positional & personnel changes FWIW... Consider pushing Rivers into the mid field for some serious minutes but only once Marty Hore is fully fit and ready to share his role off the bench (trial run). RIvers the stand out of all the bit part wanna be mids we've tried to run through there so far this season, albeit off a very low sample size, so not extremely confident this would work either. Worth a trial run though!? Petty simply has to come out for JVR. That's a no brainer this week against the Pies who will look to fully expose such weaknesses in form. And speaking of weaknesses i would consider taking Smacca out for KB and ask him to work on his fitness / strength over the next four to six week block while at Casey. It's not AFL standard. Same with Petty. Push Sparrow forward just for this week to cover the Smacca role. Then consider Jeffo for the Kangas depending on how he goes at Casey. Coming in for Sparrow in that match. Sparrow as sub. Again depending on how Sparrow goes also vs the Pies. KB a great opportunity to see who will stand up and is capable, willing and fully fit / in form going into the second half of the season post the bye. Woey comes in for Hunter. Chandler is shot. Another horror performance on the weekend and continuing on with his massive drop away post about Rnd 5. He must be still hampered with that knee / leg issue and it's showing big time. Moniz comes in to take on that role and bring the forward pressure which is sadly lacking other than Kozzy. Who unfortunately is not playing enough time forward to impact in his usual manner here and probably pretty spent when he does from playing a fair chunk in the middle. Therefore he simply isn't able to bring his usual F50 heat and crumbing goals. His one percenters are down 33% on 2023, inside 50 tackles down almost half by 49% and average goals since his return from suspension in Rnd 7 (vs his first four rounds) are down a massive 42%! Coming off a high base of 2 per match in the first four rounds which makes his season average look alot better than it is of late.. only 7% off his 2023 average which is deceiving. Rivers for some of Kozzy's mid minutes helps alot here and also with some speed / spread on the outside from 666 & mid field stoppages. With no one else providing much of that other than Tracc and to a lessor degree Viney on occasions this season. What a fail that was. So many caught read hot and in clear view with 4 umpires yet not paid or overruled, including the one below and Tracc's yesterday that would have resulted in a hot at goal. A few improvements like blowing the whistle earlier when players were wrapped up (at times) Pay a few HTBs here and there and ignore the rest! The AFL and its umpiring continue on continuing on with their trashing of the game ... https://www.facebook.com/share/r/ExcRmb3Eq5Uhj3dg/?mibextid=D5vuiz

Ah yes that one ... thanks DZ

I think you mean Sparrow's smother that lead to Tracc's snap goal DZ but i get what you're saying. And agree... the little selfless acts and big second efforts are the things that often separate teams that look very even on paper and recent form. A game of inches as they often say.

The above... Something is really NQR behind the four walls imho. That should've been a solid win. We were all set coming in from a 7 day break after two fabulous wins against the SA mob and we then dished up the most meek mild game i've seen live in many years. Inexplicable unless.we are still having issues with coming in to a game as favourites and the expecation that comes with it. Surely we're past that now!? If we are then i could be wrong but my gut feel tells me somethings afoot at Demon HQ.

Well after that putrid performance of course! The filth always bring manic white line effort and grunt at the footy. Sometimes that's the main difference between two fairly even teams (on paper) on any particular day/night. And that's the big diff between us and them right now and has been since at least 2017. They even beat us in our flag year up at the Gabba in one of Buckley's last coaching gigs if i'm correct. You can be sure the Pies will bring maximum effort / attack on KB. But you canna trust this particular team to bring any particular level of footy quarter by quarter, let alone week to week so far in 2024. They may for a few quarters or...they may not. Or they might produce just one lousy quarter. Or maybe three beauties. But rarely a four quarter special performance that indicates Prelim final footy and integrity against quality opposition. We also have too many players who are picking and choosing in the effort / attack stakes. That's a huge moral sapper and doesn't sit well with me at all. I can only imagine what some of the regular performers and senior leaders might be thinking of their efforts. Goodwin really has to demand better and if they don't bring it, banish them for a long stint at Casey and potential redemption. But a real redemption where they truly earn the right to come back. If they don't then so be it. They stay there and get traded or delisted at year's end. If you want a successful club culture and team, year after year, effort has to be a non negotiable! Simon's a little too nice and chummy since 2021 imho. I'm still wondering where the ruthless Simon of late 2020 went to!??

Poor pressure (much of the year), over using HBs and don't cope well with frontal pressure or any sustained high level pressure either. The inside was obliterated today and as soon as it got outside of the contested circle they were too fast and slick. What a dog's breakfast and not the first time. Brissy & then the Eagles both showed us up as phoneys. Today was just the extra icing. Whatever game plan Goodwin was working on in terms of transition from turnover from the defensive zone, with the list as is, that is now dead in the water for this season. He needs to get us back to our 1 wood of stoppage / clearance dominance and two way running from mids and wingers. Salem & Sparrow are not the answer through the middle. Nor ANB ... yes throw him in occasionally for 10 - 15% of time at CBs but thats about it. Certainly not up in the 40s - 60s we've seen of late. Kozzy yes but not so high on the CBA % either Simon. Around 30% mid / 70% small forward, sharing the role with Tracc.. approx 70% mid / 30% HF feels about right. Clarry is too hit & miss right now. His pressure game, run out of stoppage is poor and hands are shocking. I'd love to send a message to him & the entire group here. Drop him to Casey for at least two to three matches and ask him to work on these aspects and get himself right. His best is just ok and his worst is just too far away at present. But it's easy to say these things. Who do you bring in? The cupboard for mids is bare at Casey right now. The lack of anyone of quality pushing up for spots is costing us this year imv. The naysayers can laugh but it may well be time to start blooding Jeffo post the Collingwood match and in selective matches, starting with Norf. Short stints and then back to Casey if needed. Give the young fella a taste of the big league. You never know. He just might surprise. Even if he doesn't, there's nothing to lose now. Build the rest of our game around the above and fast or this will be another season lost.

And now behind the Pies (just) on percentage 🤮
