Any idea if we are likely to be putting a corralling cooler on Nick tomorrow? Be insanity if we don't. If so who gets the job half done?
-
Alot of tomorrow's outcome will come down to will, want, fight and desperation imv NS. But yes there's a fair bit of grasping at straws and just poor judgement going on with selection here me thinks. Goodwin will have had to try and wind the clock back big time on the track this week in an attempt to arrest the massive slide away from our past three years dominance in contested & clearance DNA. Much of that task will fall on an under-manned mid field that, aside from Tracc who also plays a fair chunk forward, sees our two contested bulls either a fair way off their early season form (Viney roughly 18% down post Rnd 5) & Clarry (approx 23% down on 2023 but pulling that back in the last 6 weeks... his rating up 29% on his first six weeks but off a low base). It will take a mamoth effort from the entire 22 + sub to get over the line tomorrow. Especially if it's raining. We also need to bring sustained heat on the opponent, particularly up forward in order to retain the pill inside 50 where we've been bleeding like a sieve with Kozzy playing too much mid time to bring his usual heat (inside 50 tackles down nearly 50% this season and 33% down over the last six weeks vs Rnds 0 to 5). Those hoping JVR might bring the heat inside 50 tomorrow might also want to think again. Zero inside 50 tackles in his last four matches. General tackles down 68% during this period also vs his first six matches (Rnds 0 - 5). One percenters dropping away by 20% this season vs 2023. Havent checked pressure acts. You could once rely on us to bring the heat and pressure opponents into turnover and ensure a pretty decent retention game inside 50 in most matches from 2021 - 2023. That has ebbed away big time this season where we are now pretty poor at both. I realise we have trialled a diff method which is fine. But appeared to have over balanced here and the change hasn't given us an edge in 'scoring off defensive mid turnover' for all that we've given up. In fact if anything, all it's done has made us a relatively easy team to score against and ended up playing too many players out-of-form. To the point that the entire (prior) team method / DNA has almost dissapeared. We're about to find out if one week of pretty much a full 360 here plus a few personnel changes (by SG & the FD) will have the desired effect and arrest the recemt slide.

His impact with that wasn't that impressive from what i witnessed CD. There were a number of turnovers im there also. Very hard to judge anyone's form on one match against a bottom rung VFL opponent that's only won one other match aside from against us last week. Same with today's game vs the filth.
-
He was at least 3 to 5 weeks away at Casey from being match fit and finding form at VFL level. One of a number of players who have been rushed back prematurely so far and haven't had to earn their spot.

Is it too much to ask this team to back up and play again tomorrow!??

I'd be lining Tom Hawkins up for a decent post retirement contract (if he's open) from now. If you want to be the best, hire the best! You will also give yourself a decent chance to attract the best.
-
Very good in the second half. Good chance he would he make us better in the short term and assist Max. Then take over the No.1 mantle after Max pulls the pin. And on the wish list of needs for 2025... Two additional mids, 1 outside 1 inside A gun tall forward

Agree with this but there's also a 'want' and 'effort' factor here. You can't pick and choose when to go, even at VFL level. That assumes of course that you want to take the next step up! It's those second / third consecutive efforts, one percenters, tackles - pressure and gut running/multiple sprints that may get you noticed.... along with the other aspects you spoke of with ball in hand. While you aren't expecting a massive running machine from Sesto given his HF preference / role, you do need to see him on his bike a little more often and hitting in at the contest a bit more when it's his turn to go. He does do it. He does show it at times don't get me wrong. He's def had some special moments. But he really needs to start turning up the wick IMHO if he's going to make it. If he does, i also agree that his ceiling is potentially much higher than many at Casey. But as the old adage goes, talent will only get you so far in this game. I hope the coaches have pressed this with him and shown him some highlights and maybe a few low lights so that he can see the light and that he isn't that far away, but is also potentially a mile away IF he doesn't get on his bike from here. No one hands you these opportunities at this level, you have to go out and take it.

Welcome to Demonland: Luker Kentfield
Demon Dynasty replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Kid's got some presence. Seems pretty level headed. Get a good 6 week block into him and who knows. Obviously a big injury free pre-season or two would be handy and some games at Casey to learn the ropes. Looking forward to his journey. A pack busting forward with a frame that's pretty much ready to go bar the above. Good luck Kenty and give it your all son. You don't get too many chances at this level. -
Yes that would not surprise at all. Some of the harsh critics tend to brush over some of these potential unkowns (outside of clubland) This would explain his seemingly 'outside' style game of late and looking a tad lost at times while out there. He is also roughly 25% off his 2023 contested & clearance averages to date. Although his tackling is coming right back up to almost 2023 levels @5.8 per match over the last 6 weeks vs 6.3 in 2023. It might also explain his reduced attendance at CBs vs Freo. Down 12% on 2024 average (70%) to 58% in this game. And down 23% on his 2023 average of 81%. His overall ave CBA so far this season is down 11% on 2023. My gut feel is it may have flared a little post the Saints and we are now looking to nurse him into the bye with less time at CBA. Maybe we are looking for a managed situation from there. Giving him some time out with the bye and possibly adding to that the match against North in order to assist with any hand / fitness / soreness issues?

You lost me at 'ruck' We are def short two quality mids. One inside & one outside If Clarry doesn't get back to contested beast mode of the past we are toast

How some coaches from some teams like the Doggies (and us) feel you can allow the likes of Neale, Daicos, Butters & Cripps (and most likely Harley from here) to run around without a heavy tag is astonishing. There are always going to be situations when some oppos have one or maybe two absolute guns that need some serious attention or at least one more than you might have! Any coach who thinks they aren't necessary is a little tra la la imho.

How was that 50 to Berry? He takes the mark. Continues to try and play on forward of the mark when technically he needs to go behind the mark before playing on. So he is held 'on the mark' by the opponent as Berry never at any stage looked to go back behind his own mark. The player standing on the mark (as instructed by the ump) is surely allowed to hold his position if his opponent trys to push through the mark AND play on! I call BS

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Forwards Bayley Fritsch (Medium Forward 27yo 188cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Fritsch has played all 12 matches in 2024. Although holding his form somewhat over the last six weeks, Fritsch started off a fair way off his 2023 metrics. In most of those he has failed to peg them back during this last block of games. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Forwards Kysaiah Pickett (Key Forward 23yo 171cm Rnd 1 to Rnd 4 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Kozzy has played 10 matches from 12 so far in 2024. Missing Rnd 0 & Rnd 5 through suspension. I personally feel we need to get the balance of Kozzy's time spent between forward and CBs right. His CBA% of 52% against Freo was too much for my liking. Robbing him / us of valuable minutes up forward providing pressure and potential goal scoring. He was mostly ineffective anyway. Then you have Clarry's CB attendance down 25% from his 2024 average. Not sure what the FD was thinking there. Kozzy's goal scoring from his first four weeks is down 41% and his tackles inside 50 down 33% and nearly 50% on his 2023 average. His one percenters are down 33% on 2023. Unfortunately his turnovers are also up a massive 220% on his first four matches and 25% on his 2023 turnovers. Have we tinkered a little too much with some player's roles so far? Tipping the balanc out of wack if you like. Effectively playing a number of them out-of-form? If so, it would appear much of this has happened (with said players) over the last 6 to 7 weeks. #36 K Pickett Rnds 1 to 4 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 4.8 6.0 26.3 5.2 5.5 5.0 Uncontested Poss 6.3 8.8 41.3 6.2 7.8 26.0 Effective Disposals* 8.0 8.7 8.3 7.0 8.4 19.2 Disposal Effeciency % 73.5 58.0 -15.4 59.5 64.2 4.7 Contested Marks* 0.8 0.0 -100.0 0.1 0.3 215.0 Marks inside 50* 1.5 0.7 -55.6 1.3 1.0 -22.2 One Percenters* 0.8 1.0 33.3 1.3 0.9 -32.5 Clearances* 1.3 2.0 60.0 1.2 1.7 37.3 Rebound 50s* 0.0 0.0 - 0.1 0.0 -100.0 Inside 50s* 1.5 3.5 133.3 2.4 2.7 13.4 Tackles* 3.5 3.0 -14.3 4.1 3.2 -22.8 Score Involvements* 5.0 5.2 3.3 5.6 5.1 -8.5 Meters Gained 182.3 293.5 61.0 217.7 249.0 14.4 Turnovers* 1.3 4.0 220.0 3.2 2.9 -9.1 Intercepts* 1.0 1.8 83.3 0.8 1.5 96.9 Tackles Inside 50* 1.3 0.8 -33.3 2.0 1.0 -48.8 Time On Ground % 86.8 86.5 -0.3 82.0 86.6 4.6 Goals* 2.0 1.2 -41.7 1.6 1.5 -7.4 Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 2.6 2.1 -17.0 2.1 2.3 9.8 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com

Yes 100% DZ. Although we've been playing him as a small rebounding defender. I'm sure he hasn't lost his pressure side and should still have forward craft nouse from past years in that position at Casey. He can build back his forward play if given a block of games at senior level. He also loves a goal and is a pretty decent crumbing goal sneak at times. He has wheels and could assist Kozzy with some manic pressure inside 50. I can't see it happening though. Goodwin doesn't like to tinker too much and has not picked Moniz so far in 2.5 seasons.
