  1. Absolute waste of a list spot. We can ill afford to be recruiting more downhill skiers.
  2. Yes absolutely WC. The club is always bigger than the individual and this mob needed to be taken on head on Monday including their anti - hero scumbag, win, lose or draw. Gus was offered a place in the FD but after a week chose to walk away, which is fair. That's his prerogative and the retirement is obviously still raw. But at the same time you can't have it both ways and dictate to the playing group 'your preferred outcome' if that is what you are hinting was Gus's request Oppo clubs can smell an easy kill and that's what we've served up and presented to all and sundry since Rnd 10.
  3. There are other players on the field who could've brought the heat. One of ours talked the big talk in the off and failed to fire a shot when the opportunity was given. If you let others including bullies walk allover you, then guess what. They're just gonna laugh in your face and keep doing it. And that's exactly what the filth did from the time they walked up the race. FCS If you aint gonna follow through with the talk just shut your traps and play footy boys. I don't believe all the media / filth lead crappola from the Pies about their scumbag either. Pure marketing PR pushed out by the leaders at pooh park to make 'their boy' look like a saint and garner the sympathy of the footy circus. Probably endorsed / sanctioned / pushed by AFL HQ as well. Whatever the build up into the Freo and filth matches, it should've been a huge one with a massive opening on a mega aggressive scale across the board. Especially against the filth but not much less in the red centre. Whatever Goodwin preached in the build up to both of those games it ended up a massive fail on both counts. Or possibly it was successful in that he must have had all the players sitting in a circle, holding hands and singing Kumbaya after each training session. If so, well done Simon. It worked! If not then there is something else afoot that will eventually come out. I could be wrong but there's a wiff of something NQR about at this club of late. And IF it's player/s related why has there not been some action (if needed) prior to those ganes in order to sort it!? IF it's at a higher level then that also needs sorting, and fast. Let it fester and there's a good chance we end up finishing 13th or worse after looking like a potential top four contender just two weeks ago. That's a potential drop of 9 places (or worse) in half a season with most players available prior to Tracc going out. Let that sink in for a bit.
  4. We can't seriously be considering Lobb. Schache, Fullo and then Lobb!!?? Club will have completely lost its marbles if it's making a play here. It would appear the hard edge that Roos & PJ brought in is sadly being slowly flushed down the dunny off the field and based on the last month of footy, now on the field. One can only hope Taylor and Lamb haven't caught the "[censored] the bed" bug!
  5. I watch it from behind the goals Red and the errors, flaws and poor craft stand out like the proverbial. 👉🏼 Lack of separation 👉🏼 STILL too many going up together with no one down 👉🏼 Three seasons and Kozzy is still going for speckie of the year. Often spoiling his team mate in the process and also not there for the crumb. Unforgiveable this is still happening after that long. 👉🏼 Most or all forwards running away from a pressured ball carrier coming through the middle or off a wing far too often. Doesn't always happen but it's far too often. Under this scenario the pressured kicker will often dump it shallow straight into the basket of an oppo defensive sweeper who has read the play better. 👉🏼 Attempting to play small mediums or mediums at true CHF for serious minutes. I understand you have to try things and mix things up. Present a diff look and test your opponents. But this is a tactic that should be a rare surprise if standard structures arent't working. Not a regular 'go to'. 👉🏼 Smalls, Mediums & even HF - Mids running into the leading lanes of designated hit ups disrupting their attemps to mark on a lead. I've seen (from behind the goals) Fritta & Melk (last season) yelling in frustration a number of times for rookies and seasoned players to get the hell out. 👉🏼 Non desgnated hit up forwards do not provide enough blocks / chop outs in general in order to assist marking forwards gain space / time on their opponents. 👉🏼 Not enough dumby leads by non designated stay-at-home forwards in order to clear out the forward 50 for pack crashing / marking forwards and crumbers like JVR & Kozzy. The only players with genuine leading patterns and / craft ... BBB & Melk ... when playing Fritta... when he decides to bring it That's just from recent memory. You see a fair bit from behind the goals that you don't see from the wing on the box.
  6. 'Managed' one of if not their best player from last week in Milera. Membrey not great against the Suns but still part of a winning team. You would expect he gets at least one more week to see if he could bring something after kicking 5 against Casey two weeks before. Tanking?
  7. Yes & Yes. Rivers in particular is a must to cover for Tracc's abscence. Turner to go back or Marty (once fit) to cover the Rivers role when he goes into the middle. As for the other two mentioned... McVee would need a good pre-season to be capable in a serious way imv Ditto Windsor & regardless he is still a wringing wet rookie learning how to play the winger role with only 11 or so games experience under his belt. I can't see them throwing him into the middle any time soon.
  8. Throw Fullo in there as an 'either / or' and I'll take whatever odds you're offering that either of them would BBP (provided BBB doesn't go lame in match and has to be subbed early!)
  9. don’t worry.. with good Stafford's coaching we can rid him of those habits.
  10. I reckon this too but not entirely. You still need players who can finesse, have great poise and vision coming inside and then deliver the ball to space (that player with ball sees) in order to draw leading forwards to the ball. I reckon its about 70/30 but that is also dependent on the quality of the oppo and their level of pressure around the ground. Just dumping it 8 or 9 times out of 10, even under little to no pressure won't work all that well against decent defences. Our only decent ball user coming inside (if you believe Champion Data) is ANB. And he can't do that as effectively if being used to tag the likes of Daicos. Which he did brilliantly mind you on Monday. It comes down to recruiting very good ball users in general, by trade and draft. Just don't recruit anyone unless they are VG or better at field and goal kicking. The finesse, finish coming inside is a critical point of diff imv. The result being more marks inside 50 in more dangerous places and better conversion % in front of the sticks. Assuming you've chosen well here also like JVR & BBB for example. Minor skill improvements all over the ground can result in a marginal improvement in the above. And sometimes that's all you need in today's game with the differences between teams (and scores) very tight in the majority of games now. Something i've been harping about for years now. Don't bother with average, mediocre (or worse) skills when recruiting. They need to have high level kicking skills as a starting base or they don't get picked unless they're in a purely extraction / inside bull clearance role aka Viney, Libba, Rowell etc. That's a little different. Even then, if you are looking at two similar players in this specialist inside role, you should still favour the one who is showing he is more accurate by hand / foot assuming other facets needed are relatively similar imo.
  11. Definitely worth a stab but wouldn't be selling the farm to land. We need a quality outside mid as well. I see him as a 50/50 inside / outside type. My worry is who replaces Vines if we happened to get LDU as i don't see him as a big extractor (first use) type mid being more of an inside (clearance) /outside player? Clarry used to share some of the load with Vines with extractions (i could be wrong but that was my take) but appears to have lost this part of his game this season. If we can get him back to assiting.here then we're all good. But what if we can't and he's cooked in this part of his (old) game? Most teams don't have more than one regular go to extractor either but Vines is ours and is getting towards the pointy end and is going to need increasing support here with an eventual replacement.
  12. Poor decision to trade him in in the first place. Needed a quality mid. Not in hindsight, didn't like the idea from the time it was rumoured. We now need two mids, one inside bull and one outside with spread, leg speed & quality use. Will Day a great example of what we need in that last requirement. It's no coincidence the Hawks have gone from boiled lollies to chocolates since his return. Not saying he's the sole reason for their return to form either but has had an effect. They lost their first 5 matches. Taking away their two outlier games vs Nth (W) & Sydney (L), since then they have won five out of six, only losing with the last kick of the day against Port away by one point.
  13. Rnd 8 vs the Lions. A very ordinary game where he was caught on many occasions. Slipped a number of those with shoulder rolls and managed to get some pressured kicks & HBs off. 14 disposals (not sure how many were effective), 4 marks, zero tackles. Played alot better the previous week vs the Blues at IKON. Unless they were looking to have him play mid minutes to assist the followers (unlikely) im really not sure why he was picked. Possibly as a relief off the bench to assist young Windsor on his wing? Another player recalled too early and without showing much at Casey (comsistently or at a high enough level) for mine with other players (occasionally) much more deserving of a call up before Hunter (Moniz). Selection integrity woeful so far this season.
  14. Haven't solved or improved this aspect of our game since Steve posted this topic and it'll be three seasons by Sept. I'd say we are STILL one of the most unreliable kicking for goal teams in the AFL for set shots in the AFL bar Roo (when he's clunking them which until last week wasn't often) and Fritsch who of late has also been off. Whoever is teaching them 'technique' it's not working. Are we teaching them? We also still have some players not understanding or confident about whether to use a straight kick or a banana for goal on many occasions. Then there's the likes of Kozzy who occasionaly still plays on too early with the banana instead of using up the enite shot clock to allow defenders / mids to re-energise and set up behind the ball for a potential kick in. He is also a perennial hooker of the ball once he shoots from roughly 35 - 40 or more. Same for Max. Max just laughs about it but surely it should have been majorly corrected by now (for both). Whenever i watch training i never see anyone instructing or advising on kicking technique either for goal ornin general play. I never see us drilling with mids / HBs moving the ball through the middle and forwards providing hit up leads to receive. I see them doing delivery skill drills from anyone to everyone but usually it's across the middle of the ground, not coming into the 50. Having said that, i've only watched open sessions at Gosch's so maybe we don't show this side at Gosch's but do it in a big way at Casey? As well as instructive kicking for goal techniques and advice on when / how tdo kick bananas vs straight kicks. Whatever we are doing at practice, it certainly hasn't played out on the field consistently and instead we most often [censored] the bed in big games or look amaturish coming inside 50 (connecting) and shooting for goal. Again bar Roo & Fritta. I would add Melk & BBB in there also when playing but of course we've rarely seen either of them now and both are approaching the finish line. Aside from that the rest are / is a dog's breakfast and its been that way for 2.5 seasons now. The Cats pride themselves on the above and do it much better which is one.of the key reasons why they have the best H&A W/L ratio of any team for over a decade now. Their kicking technique in general, execution when hitting up targets i50 and shot selection between straight and around the body is usually second to none. Going back towards more of a contested, clearance and defensive DNA is a start (if we can...which i doubt we can to enough degree to make a big enough diff this season given our lack of depth) but it won't fix this issue unless we address method coming i50 including forward patterns/methods and leads, general field kicking and shot for goal technique under simulated high pressure. If that means getting the loud speakers out on the ground with super loud simulated fan noises including booing and the 'Colliiiiinwoood' chant then so be it! If we can't fix this basic and obvious part of our game in the second half of this season, then i seriously think we need to recomsider the present coaching line up from the top down and start again as they will have proven that they are incapable of fixing this part of our game. Three strikes and you're out fellas!
  15. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Forwards Jack Billings (Mid Forward 28yo 185cm) Rnds 1 to 7 vs Rnds 8 to 13 Billings has played the equivalent of just over 9 games this season if you include his subbed game time. In this 6 v 6 round comparison, he has played the equivalent of just over 5.5 games during the six matches from Rnds 1 to 7 and three games in the last six matches during Rnds 8 to 13. I would not normally do a comparison if a player has played less than four matches in a six week block but just putting this out there for interests sake. It is worth noting that for a mid - forward he does not kick many goals, only kicking two goals in total with his last goal against the Hawks in Rnd 2. Has he been playing higher up the ground in the later rounds? Rebounds up slightly vs the earlier block and inside 50s down by about half. His Player Rating in the earlier 6 matches was reasonably good if you see him as a mostly HHF type at 2.5 but has since dropped away by 23% to 1.9 Part of that drop can be explained by less time on ground, dropping 8%. That makes the fall roughly 15%. To put that into some context, i'm assuming a close comparison might be Chandler? During this same 6 week block his Rating was 2.4 and has also now dropped to 1.9 during the later Rnds 8 to 13, the same rating as Billings. The drop off in this last 6 rounds by so many is astonishing. You have to ask what the hec has happened to this group since Rnd 9 vs the Cats. I'm guessing it comes down to a massive drop away in contested, clearances, scores from turnover and our ability (or lack thereof) to now defend the oppo transitioning and scoring from turnover. Plus a lack of pressure allover the park compared to previous years. Moving too far away from our DNA as many have already pointed out. #14 J Billings Rnds 1 to 7 Rnds 8 to 13 % Change Contested Poss 4.7 5.0 6.6 Uncontested Poss 13.6 13.9 2.1 Effective Disposals* 12.5 11.6 -7.6 Disposal Effeciency % 58.2 61.5 3.4 Contested Marks* 0.0 0.0 - Marks inside 50* 0.4 0.7 84.8 One Percenters* 0.7 0.3 -53.8 Clearances* 0.2 1.0 454.3 Rebound 50s* 1.3 1.3 5.6 Inside 50s* 2.9 1.3 -53.8 Tackles* 2.2 3.0 38.6 Score Involvements* 5.2 3.6 -29.9 Meters Gained 278.1 344.7 23.9 Turnovers* 3.0 4.6 52.2 Intercepts* 1.4 1.3 -7.6 Tackles Inside 50* 0.5 0.3 -38.4 Time On Ground % 73.7 65.5 -8.2 Goals* 0.4 0.0 -100.0 Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 2.5 1.9 -23.6 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com
  16. Played his best game for Casey in terms of roughly three quarters or so of solid footy through the middle and HF on Sunday. He was up there in the top mix with the best on the day for Casey. White BOG for mine. I'll eat my hat if he isn't debuting against North barring an injury issue. Moniz was patchy but still passable and has shown consistent decent to high level form now for many weeks. Great link up line breaking overlap player who may help get it into our 50 more quickly and often to provide forwards with better looks. He does turn it over at times but no diff to Rivers imho and needs to be given the opportunity. Hopefully can clean up his disposal game as he matures. His pressure is decent at ground level and reading the play / ball in the air and closing speed is also at a pretty good level. I'd have him in for Bowey in a heart beat. Sesto comes in for Tracc Kolt for Chandler Fullo for Petty Woey for Laurie BBB replaces Billings as sub I would also give Clarry & Sparrow a long spell at Casey if there was depth. Unfortunatley there isn't. In an ideal world we would be better served with White (on a year to year contract) and Roy George on this list than Billings and Laurie.
  17. Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 13, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023 Not looking good. With the loss of Gus, our season was always riding on the fitness and form of the three amigos in the middle. We have now lost Tracc. Viney has been on the decline (injuries?) since Rnd 4 vs the Crows and Clarry is a shadow of his former self and, if we had a replacement, i would suggest needs a long stint at Casey. We also needed Sparrow to come on but unfortunatley he instead has regressed badly and is really only getting games due to a lack of depth. Chandler same. Time to see what we have downstairs and give some of the developing / other role players a go such as Sestan (VG on the weekend), Moniz (serviceable) and Fullo (did ok!). Looks like we are also attempting to develop BBB into a forward / ruck chop out option at Casey. Is that necessary though given his knee and where he's at in his career? Others are in the mix but haven't really shown they are ready yet such as Kolt. Smacca had a good game also but still needs to build a tank, defensive pressure at ground level and consistency before he gets another call up imho. About two to three weeks and then back in or do we risk bringing him in earlier? Woey & Tommo should never have been dropped for KB and need to come straight in. The players who should not be playing and shouldn't have been played for many weeks now which i have harped on about for a while... Petty - poorly managed from his too early return after 1 shizen casey game Chandler - Also poorly managed. It was obvious he was on a massive slide off his early form from about three weeks ago Turner - not after the Freo game, either needed to go down back to allow Rivers to spend more time in the middle or out of the team to work on his fitness / game at Casey Bowey - gone over this one before, gets to the right spots but just isn't damaging at all and makes us too slow to transition, allowing the oppo to get numbers forward almost every time. Puts zero speed on the ball with his stop and prop short game. Howes - just not at the pressure / intensity level for AFL right now for mine. More time at Casey needed to work on these aspects. Billings - VFL player at best and when he went back to Casey he did NOT show enough to get the recall...not sure what Goodwdin was watching / thinking here. He adds and brings nothing. Laurie - Same as Billings but also a turnover king, even at VFL level under little to no pressure at times. 5 turnovers against the pies and DE at a horrible 57%, thats 17% below AFL average. Add Hunter and Schache to this list also. Personally i'd delist those last four at season's end. 18. Regardless of game style Buck, there are certain metrics a team / player will need to bring in order to beat their opponents is my take anyway. Aspects like effective disposals, reduced turnovers (critical imo and something these ratings allow and adjust for), one percenters, tackles (although ideally you would want 'effective tackles' but we don't have access to them), contested marks, marks inside 50, tackles inside 50, rebounds, clearances, score involvements and ultimately of course the ultimate attribute... goals. These are just some that need to be going north not south if a team is to win on any given day. If looking at a positional change from one year to the next then the make of those metrics may change significantly. In that case you need to be very skeptical of comparing one year's results to another for the same player. T-Mac a great example here. Obviously he isn't scoring and he isn't going to have as many inside 50s or marks inside 50, tackles inside 50, score involvements etc. But he's going to have other aspects. Some of which may skew his rating as he is going to get a number of cheap effective disposals out the back vs up forward. He will probably also have alot more one percenters defending from behind. But then you just make sure to compare his rating to that of similar team mates playing a similar role such as May and Lever. And if i had the time to do so, comparing his rating to other Key Defenders around the comp. So yes there are flaws in any such exercise as this but if you are 'in-the-know' in terms of knowing and watching the team and its players' form / progression then you will be aware of these aspects. As i always say with any stats, they are just a backward looking snapshot of some of what's taken place on a day, a block of games or a season. They can never capture everything that takes place on a field and are just there to help as a rough guide to potential form or output of a player over any given period. Sometimes they are quite accurate and at other times they will miss by a fair way vs what actually took place on the day or in season etc. But they also sometimes remind us of what we may not have seen, and allow us to go back and check if we have time to re-watch a game and be sure that what we thought we witnessed, was actually what happened with said player on the day. I have done this at times and i have to say it has occasionally changed my view of how i perceived a player went on the day either at the ground or watching the box. In summary, i think i general the comparisons are a pretty fair guide from one season to the next, provided a player hasn't changed roles entirely. I hope that helps a little.
  19. Yes i agree dice. Sorry thats an oversight on my part. Tommo for Howes in a heartbeat. Woey for Laurie
  20. Unless they're playing a completely different role such as T-Mac Buck i still think the rating will give an indication as to whether the new style is more or less effective vs what was happening in the prior year. And if it isn't for whatever reason, if you scroll up and back through some pages here, i've done in season conparisons on most players so you can compare their first six week block of form /output with their last six weeks. In some cases they have not always played the entire six matches in each block but every metric is averaged to allow for that discepancy. I've also provided a brief summary of how many games each player has played during the 12 weeks under review, including those missed for whatever reason so you're in the know if its less than the maximum of six in each block. If i've left anyone out its most likely they've played less than four matches in either or both blocks. Ie; sample size not robust enough to justify the analysis imv.
  21. We are likely in for a world of more pain post the North game if we don't somehow bolster the middle DZ. However it happens we need to get Rivers attending significant CBs is my guess. Whether that involves Turner going down back to fill his role. Or Marty once fit coming in for Turner to do same. Whatever it takes. Also get Bowey out. He is too slow to transition and his passing is almost always short regardless of whats ahead / around him. We already have one of those in Salem but even he is a bit more adventurous at times. I'd need to watch McVee & Howes more closely to see if they're providing anything diff. I'd be bringing in Moniz to play Bowey's role here. He has the wheels and plays a much better link up running game imv. Breaking lines and pinging the ball more quickly i50 for better looks for our forwards. Some of his play is risky at times but we're getting smashed anyway so nothing to lose by trialling him and he's in pretty good form at Casey. Love to see Sestan come in for Chandler. I think he's almost ready but again he couldn't be worse than what we've seen from Chin in 6 of his last 7 games. And while i don't think he's ready i'd consider bringing in Kolt for Sparrow who has sadly gone south further and further as the year's progressed. It's a pitty we don't have White on our list as he would be a handy in for Sparrow. Fullo in for Petty to see what he can offfer vs North is a must and a no brainer. He could not be a worse forward and offers a tall ruck option with a potential 2 to 3 hit outs to advantage. Even that would be 2 or 3 more than either Petty or JVR were able to bring against the filth. Re Clarry & May i'll leave it for now as im just so [censored] off with both i really need time out on it to process and vent. But not on a public forum such as here sorry. Im sure you will see or hear about it elsewhere, including diff opinions to mine ✌🏻
  22. How the hell did he get back on the field. Crazy. Could be out for the remainder of the H&A? Lets hope there's no complications. All the best son ✌🏼
  23. Round 13, 2024 MCG - Magpies vs Demons Our fourth capitulation for the season and imo our second worst performance behind Rnd 10 vs the Eagles. A few individual performances went well, but beyond that it was a complete team fail across all lines. Shut down Viney (or if he ends up injured) it would seem we are pretty much toast at extraction (and then clearance), especially in the middle where we are getting trounced even by mediocre opposition or worse! As high as Clarry's rating is he is still a long way off past seasons and i just didn't rate that game at all. He was running past contests, missing too many tackles, handballing to no one in particular or dump kicking without even glancing straight to the oppo etc. Kicking in general was abysmal at times. And then there was the post match disgrace with him and May, which i will leave there for fear of saying something i'll regret. His ranking is also a bit misleading with Viney having a complete downer and Tracc subbed out playing only 40% game time with the rib issue. Team Rating down substantially on 2023 again (-16%). Another horrid rating from the bottom 6 rated players (17th to 22nd). Overall Team Pressure (164) again WELL below AFL average (180) with the Pies a mile ahead (187). That's almost as bad the Saints against us a few weeks back (160). That's how bad we are tracking in this part of our game. Defence and forward 50 pressure a massive fail with a fair chunk of scoring chain sources coming from stoppages / turnovers inside our own F50 and the bulk from turnovers on the wings. If i was to hazard a guess, sadly i would say we are now one of the easiest teams to defeat in the AFL with possibly only North sitting below us (until now). And we will get an understanding of where we are at there in our next match. How Chandler, Sparrow, Petty are getting game after game after game is mind boggling. Not to mention the selection debacle of Billings & Laurie. Soft as butter. 24. Another 4 to 5 weeks from a fitness sense but yes, i'd start blooding him ahead of Petty as sson as the metrics indicate he's capable of about 2.5 - 3 quarters off the bench. Turner is a young fella who hasn't been able to stay out of the injury shed for long enough to shine imv. Also looks lost up forward and a massive turnover kimg there to boot. Then again, aside from JVR yesterday, most of our KFs have looked.lost all year. Dog's breakfast ahead of the ball. I'd trial Turner in the River's role (at least try and mould him into it in this back half). And push Rivers into the middle for an inside / outside role to replace Clarry (short term trial over 4 to 6 weeks). Kemty most likely hasn't got the wheels yet but has the body, forward smarts / finish and white line fever we sadly lack with our KFs right now, aside from JVR. Just needs a fitness block. He would need a pre-season or two in the gym also but hec, so does Petty & Turner! Will need to be managed of course and probably only in short stints but i'd love.to see him getting some games experience in this back half ahead of Petty & Turner. BBB was also the best of the KFs at Casey yesterday from what i saw and i'd have him ahead of those last two in a heartbeat (in the short term) assuming his knee can go the distance up with the big boys.
  25. Not yet Mr Old imv. Even Fullo has him covered, at least on the tap work side, at present. Even at ground level. Bodying sense Verral's well ahead but he can't leap much and this effects his tap work imv. Concrete boots if you like. His tank also doesn't seem to be there in terms of follow up ground work and ability either (yet). I'd have Fullo ahead of Verral right now if Max was out or needed a chop out (ahead of or in conjunction with JVR). And not with alot of confidence either. It's quite possibke that neither would make the step up! (as they sit right now). I reckon the FD might even be thinking of trialling BBB, with dodgy knee and all, as a replacement for another tall (and some/all of JVR's ruck duties or forward half duties) post the bye.
