Proved them wrong
I like this post a lot. (Except for the last line. It seems to diminish the value of the rest of the excellent post.)

An awakening
And yet you'll admit to using Facebook. I know which is the bigger crime.

Proved them wrong
David King would have got it right at some stage during the year. I may be mistaken (not a word you'll hear from many working in the media, by the way) but King seems to adopt positive and negative views of every team throughout the year, depending on what snippet of Champion Data he is looking at in isolation. His approach is consistent with what a former boss of mine used to say - set your targets after you've seen where the arrows have landed.

List prediction 2022
Quick note for Demonlanders. There's a huge difference between resigned and re-signed. Your keyboards have hyphens for a reason. Please use them appropriately over the next few weeks and save the rest of us from having palpitations.

In Jason Taylor we trust!
Agree, and not just for the players we traded in. He also actively and wisely managed to trade picks as well. That gave Taylor the chance to get some of the players he wanted (eg, Pickett). Another reason to thank Josh Mahoney.

List prediction 2022
A review of this thread made some entertaining reading. I'm not critical of anyone who posted what they thought. At least they were prepared to present their opinions for all to see. Some suggestions were spot on and others look a bit, well, surprising now we've had the benefit of seeing them play (or not) in 2021.

A Shout Out to Saty
I think Saty might have managed to get himself into this photo between Harmes and Brayshaw. It's the right height and colour for the top of Saty's head and exactly where Saty would want to be, although I guess it could also be Harmes' tattoo-ed shoulder.

Are you a friend of Willy and the Poor Boys?

Farewell Aaron NietschkeÂ
Nietzsche also famously said, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Given the injury trials he has had to overcome, I hope Aaron can take something from that expression, too.

3 goals in 32 seconds - the quickest 3 goals ever?
It was not just an amazing sequence of goals, but an amazing seqence of games. Has Melbourne ever played four more enjoyable games to watch than from Round 23 to the Grand Final?

Gary Ayres Player of the Finals
Let me be the devil's advocate. The other way of looking at this award is that it rewards consistency over a series recognising that someone might play 4 excellent games yet not win anything for all that effort. What the voting system reflects is that McRae's four games were better than anyone else's in total, whether the others played 1, 2, 3 or 4. In other words, it's a glorified participation award. And I'm happy with it like that.

3 goals in 32 seconds - the quickest 3 goals ever?
Just imagine the 1972 Grand Final. Carlton v Richmond with the final scores 28.9.177 to 22.18.150. That's 50 goals in approx 120 minutes (plus 27 behinds).

Number 2
I've never understood why this is the case. If I had been a professional AFL player, I'd like to hold on to whatever number I was given for the whole of my career. There have been plenty of great footballers in double digit numbers such as Ron Barassi, Alex Jesaulenko, Robert Walls and Peter Knights, just to name a few that come immediately to mind

The Next Captain
Geelong tried that about 30 years ago with Gary Ablett Sr. Disaster. I'm pretty sure he didn't even know the names of some of his team mates. And for a more recent example, I don't think Dustin Martin is captain material.

Bontempelli hit and Daniel tackle
I'd agree if he'd hit his head. But didn't he collide with the shoulder? I appreciate Oliver appeared momentarily stunned, so perhaps there was some contact, but having seen it a few times, I'm comfortable with there being no penalty. What suprises me with the Daniel tackle on Gawn was that no free kick was paid. It shouldn't matter that the ball is out of play. Again, though, I don't think there was enough in it for the MRO. However, the Western Australian equivalent of Worksafe should look at whether its a safe workplace if the artificial turf is on top of a hard surface. It's very close to the real turf and one day someone could be very badly hurt from a hard landing.

The Next Captain
It's not that long ago we had no obvious captains. I actually don't think Petracca is "captain material". I'm happy with him being the best player in the competition which is what I think he will be for the bulk of the next 5 years (unless it's Oliver!) I see Lever as the next captain. He is clearly the leader of the defence already and just exudes leadership when he speaks.

Welcome to Demonland: Bayley Fritsch
Um, no. Dame Nellie Melba probably has him covered.

Number 2
I'd like Nathan Jones to be invited to unfurl the Premierhip flag at our first home game next year.

1964 memories- calling our older supporters
How many times have you watched it so far? I've only had time to see it three times (live and twice replayed).

1964 memories- calling our older supporters
This is poetry. Should be published in a wider read journal. With respect to Greg Parke, he played an extraordinary game at Morrabbin which is the only individual performance I remember from that period. I don't know if they kept statistics of "contested marks" in those days, but even allowing for the inevitable inflation that bedevils memory, I'm sure he took more contested marks that day than any player I have seen since.

From the banal to the serious
Brings back great memories. A couple that I can recall from that era: "He slipped at the psychological moment" "He's fallen for the three-card trick" "He's shown him a clean pair of heels" I think the first two were Mike Williamson and the last one was from Peter Landy. And while we're on old sports calls. My favourite of all time was Merv Williams calling the boxing on TV Ringside when he described a boxer who was KO'd as "He's lost interest". (I can't believe I ever watched boxing. In my defence, I was about 10 years old).

Dissecting the List
Smart posting dworship. Allows everyone on Demonland to assume that you're thinking of ourselves as one of the "one or two others".

The turning point
Two things about the Caleb Daniel/Max Gawn matter. Full credit to the much-maligned Brian Taylor for the "Daniel and Goliath" line. Secondly, imagine it the other way around. Not only would it remind everyone of a St Kilda post season party, but Daniel might have ended up 10 rows back in the grandstand.
