McQualter was just interviewed and said he comes up in MC every week now and is really close. I believe his words were "really close".

    That's great.

They wont select him if they don't think he is ready. And they obviously know where he is at in terms of meeting his KPIs etc.

If he is selected fans can be confident he is ready to roll.

Are we anticipating the delisting of Bayley Fritsch, Max or Ben King, or Jamarra Ugle-Hagan due to lack of second efforts at end of year 2024

Not quite sure what point you are making here.

We should select Jefferson because there are key forwards who aren't great with their second efforts?

A better comparison would be Sam Weideman vis a vis the key reason his AFL career is a bust.

I expect a ten goal win.

    I'm confident.

My eye is in this weekend on the punt.  Excellent results on port and the giants.

As a rule, I don't back the dees, but if I did i reckon the 33 points line is great value.

We are getting close to our optimal shape and think we will go hard early to establish a break.

The eagles could bounce of the talk players are nor behind Simpson, but equally that could be a bad portent. Dees fans know all about how corrosive such chatter can be.

And they are comimg off a six day break and travel, to our 8 day and no travel.

As always the key will be taking our early chances. If we do I could see us giving them a touch up.

By the by the other bet that I reckon is value is the crows making their 27 point line.

I think Goody knows we need a seasoned body in the front half that is going to help bring the ball to ground and can stop their interceptors from cleaning up back there.

Without Petty and given the opposition, I can see why the FD have gone with Melksham, but I think Jefferson is close and will play this year.

    I doubt he will.

Not AFL level fit enough yet.

And whilst he has improved his second efforts, they are nor instinctive yet.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.

The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particularly after quarter time.

The Demons started the game brightly. They were aided by a swirly breeze and had two early goals on the board through the agency of Josh Schache and emerging young forward Matt Jefferson who is starting to look as if he belongs on the forward line after a long apprenticeship. The Lions mounted a countercharge but the Demons were equal to the task with Shane McAdam and Schache looking dangerous, albeit erratic in front of goals.

A ten point lead at the first break was looking like a good reward for effort until the strength, ability,  the greater experience and AFL list numbers of the northerners came to the fore early in the second term and it was all over.

The combination of Fort and Smith in the ruck and the on ball skills of Lyons, Robertson and Dunkley were overwhelming as the home side relentlessly pushed forward time and again off the weight of clearances. The Brisbane backmen defended strongly, their forwards played in front and marked everything. The only mystery was the fact that they weren’t further in front.

After an early second half resurgence, it was business as usual and the Demons trailed by eight goals at three quarter time and thanks to some rare individual efforts, they somehow managed to narrow the margin slightly by the end of the game.

Casey had far too few players who stood up all day. Defenders Marty Hore (24 disposals, 10 marks) and Blake Howes Howes (22 touches, seven marks) worked hard to stem the flow but had very little assistance.

Forwards Matt Jefferson and Shane McAdam presented well and did their bit with three goals each while Josh Schache scored two goals but also blemished his record with four behinds including a couple that were very forgettable. Jack Billings worked hard to get into the game but otherwise, most of the younger crop of Demons looked tired and failed to produce the goods. The young ruckmen were well beaten both at stoppages and around the ground.

Apart from Mitch White who gave his all as he always does, Roan Steele and Tom Freeman, the VFL-listed players had minimal impact on the game.

Casey are back home against Essendon, another struggling side, next Sunday. The Demons will need to lift their game as the Bombers won their game this round and are showing improvement of late with internal competition for finals places intensifies.

Thanks KC. You are a gem, and seriously your contributions are one of the best things about Demonland.

Those numbers for Jed Adams are a horror show given how much time the ball spent in our defensive 50.

I watched the first 2 and half quarters, and I'm pretty sure he didn't come off injured. Did he after that point?

Where do you see Adams at?

Of the dees listed players, Howes was the only one giving me pick me vibes. Do you think he'll come back into the ones at some point?

He is, he describes hitting a hockey puck and breaks it down into 14 different actions to be perfected, off the chart OCD. I couldn't get over that someone who plays NHL could give a [censored] about his weight but does. I'm not naming him because if for some bizarre reason it got back my mates 10% pffft

I wish some of our players had the same level of OCD when it game to kicking for goal.

Or kicking full stop for that matter.

The anecdote highlights how driven, myopic and selfish elite athletes often are, perhaps have to be (the same is true I think of many brilliant surgeons, musicians, artist, writers etc).

I would nor be surprised if there is a correlation between being an elite athlete and neurodiversity, for example conditions like adhd or being on the spectrum that have 'symptoms' like an ability to hyper focus on specific activities, OCD, preparedness to train solo for hours,  self absorbed and self sufficient and not caring what others think of you (eg in the hockey players example, he could probably care less that many would  suggest he is over-sensitive about his weight).

@Engorged Onion - what say you, am i barking up the wrong tree here?

Haha! Look that’s a valid question, but no I’m a guitar/keys player who’s really letting my crew down today.

Gallows humour incoming: I spent a good chunk of my week at my Mum’s new aged care place helping her settle in. I texted my (football-averse) wife on my way back from “the game” today asking “Is Alzheimers contagious?” She replied “No babe, you’ve just got Dee-mentia”

    Pay that.

To be honest, your two very long posts might have a lot of valid points in them, but you lost me when you said Goody took over a rubbish team.  In 2016 our ladder position all season was 9-11, and until the last game our percentage was 105% (up from 54% in 2013). If we had won our last 2 games in 2016 we would have made the 8 but we lost both. We had 4 top 3 draft picks playing that were clearly going to be stars, and Max had a breakout All Australian season.  We added mature recruits that were right for the club and our young list.  We were clearly going places which is why the 2017 preseason predictions had 90% of pundits predicting we would finish top 8. We were not rubbish.  Mitchell took over a rubbish list at Hawthorn (as did Yze at Richmond).  Goody didn’t.

    Fair point.

    Rubbish team was too strong.

Though we did finish 11th with a percentage of only 97%- 8 points and 8% behind the roos in 8th spot.

And it's a bit of a stretch to imply 'if we won our last 2 games' is evidence of being an ok team. I mean, if my aunty had a beard and all that.

We could only manage 58 points in a 20 point loss in our second to last game. It was against the blues - who won 3 less games than us and finished 14th.

And in our last game, we could only manage 44 points, the cats scored 155 and flogged us by 111.

So, sure rubbish is unfair, and yes we had potential, but we were certainly no world beaters.

And certainly a long way behind say the cats and swan teams Scott and Longmire, with whom goody has a very comparable record, took over.

Both took over far superior teams at clubs who were settled off field, had recently won a flag and have big home ground advantages.

Both are respected coaches and i don't hear many talking them down

But the relative strength of the side goody took over doesn't change my central argument - goody has a fantastic coaching record.
