No of course not EO but a lot of fans do eg. " Why aren't they talking about us?" "Why aren't we getting credit for xyz" "What did Collingwood do that we didn't?" etc. It seems to really bother them if we aren't getting limelight.

Definitely agree on the narrative stuff, if I had a paper company I'd write on that stuff as well.

But the Dees aren't the story either.

The stories of interest are cripps pies daicos bros. Max king bombets etc.

    Maybe now jackson and bowey.

To a man the commentariat last weekend uses words about the dees such as flag favourites

    Competition benchmark

And whately said dees are best team . Then daylight second.

Over exposure can only end in tears early on.

To be fair though I don't think Tim Kelly was home sick as much as he needed to go home for family reasons. Those are different things.

Feeling lonely, isolated and missing home is very different to having external family pressure to return home because of a partner/child/parent, which is also where Hogan was (and having cancer would not have helped!).

I highly doubt Jackson, who is 21 and has no long term partner or kids, would be feeling any pressure from his family to return home, when they can see what a successful career he's forging at Melbourne. He also has great connections at the club, having come across with Rivers who is an old mate.

There will always be noise that he's 'going home', because every super talented player born in WA gets that sort of attention. But there has never been a single indication that he was wanting to return to WA. He said on the Gus and Gawny podcast last year that he loves Melbourne, he keeps gushing about the team, the culture and working under Gawny. Why would you go out of your way to say those things if you were missing home?

For me the only reason he hasn't signed is because his management team knows how much his worth will continue to increase, and the club is obviously trying to put long term deals in front of him, which is not a wise move for someone of his age and calibre to sign. As much as I wish he would sign a 10 year deal, the reality is he should sign for 2 and then get even more money.
I also think that if the club didn't think they were a strong chance to retain him, they would have entertained the Cerra for Jackson trade last year, as we were very much into Cerra.

Culturally I would rather the club not offer the godfather approach. If he goes to 5 years of underperforming eagles and dockers then good luck.

I want trac looked after. And clarry and ed and gus and jack and Jakes. .....

The whole team that delivered on gf day.

Adopting the cats approach of a bit less coin for sustained success.

I think jackson will too. Sign at least a 2 year extension. And that's fair all round.

I wanted to load up on Bowey but the best player doesn't win.

Daicos is a moral because of name. Don't get me wrong he is a good footballer. But there is no way for AFL PR it goes to Bowey over Daicos.

    Probably as per above.

I think Tom’s role is to get to as many contests and ensure it doesn’t get marked by the opposition, although I think he was in the bottom rung of players he did provide that element all night. It’s frustrating that he doesn’t even seem to be going for the mark anymore, it’s just about crashing the pack.

As I said in an earlier post, Weid has to take the opportunity now and make it impossible for him to not be picked. It’s Tom’s position to lose but Weid has to make a statement to force him out.

I think your right, its just that a few times BBB and/or others were also attempting to mark.

I love his endurance and he was geart back in defence to stabilise when Salem wnet down in Rd 1. but.......

T Mac was a liability last night

Got in everyones way all game looks past it to me! Thinks like a one  transistor computer

The harder he tries the worst he gets

No way could I figure out TMAc's role.

brwon and Fritshc with Maxy resting are the forward weapons now. I love Tom but gee I hope he can find some form and a role that works for the team.

we do need Williams to get onto him with that kicking ball magic.

Funny you should say that.  In pre-match warm ups Williams take 1 or 2 players and gives them 30m kicking practice in a 1 on 1 session with him in the middle of the ground.

Hunt was one of those last year and i reckon Williams would be working with him for sure.

He just kills attacking momentum as he did last night will ill-directed or executed passing.

reminded me of when we'd play the good teams with 4 or 5 missing from their defence and watch as their 'second' defence would still carve us up in the end. and you'd think how can this be ?

I think we are being harsh on Hunt. yes disposal can be iffy at times but people might underestimate his aerial defence and ability to shut down the opposition running goals. He helped stop many potential goals tonight. not saying he had a great game but no way will he get dropped for that effort, gave it 100%.

but yeah my headline tonight was Bowey, he is Zen like with his reading of the ball coming in. never seems to over commit, is super clean and hits his targets. special mention to also to Clarry so had Rowell moved onto him as a tag and gave him a football lesson in the third.

I agree with all your sentiments on jaydens endeavour and running. But his execution is pre 2017 standard. I thought it had improved but not this year.

It stands out now the team has much improved skills across the board.

His issue is he is an old school small forward who offers nothing if he isn't scoring.

No pressure, few tackles, doesn't get up and down the ground, no clearances.

Amazing he went so high in the draft.

Not the only one after wathcing an analysis on On the Couch from earleir this week, with Dunstall bemoaning that Naughton is a great FF but if it hits the deck, which he is good at doing if he can't mark it, there's no-one crumbing and away the ball goes by the defenders.

Dogs have been exposed for all to see in their first two matches

The security were there to protect the players, not stop the crowd.

    They failed miserably.

For all Gil's huffing and puffing about fines and don't run on the ground, why on earth didn't the AFL have a serious security plan for Buddy .  He was lining up for goal for 30 secs.  More than enough time to get a squad of fit security guys ready to rush the ground and encircle him. Some swans players tried but his teammates by and large failed in this too.

My memory later in the event was seeing Buddy's wife move from elation to possibly a look of major concern for his welfare.

    A miracle no-one was hurt.

Listening to talkbalk radio this morning, I've learned that:

    • last night's win was the greatest win ever by any club playing Aussie Rules football
    • this year's Carlton team is the greatest team ever to play Aussie Rules football
    • Cripps is the greatest leader of men since Alexander the Great

    Unfair on Alexander the Great.

He was only 5 feet 0 inches so was never drafted. Retired too early at 32 but easily covers Crippa in the leadership stakes in his chosen profession after missing out on draft night.

Conquering the world. Cripps has only conquered Lygon st.

Definitely threw that one away the Doggies.

I wonder how much scarring they took away from that GF? They should have put Carlton away twice over. It's not like those shots were all tight on the boundary line 45 meters out.

    True.

I also do wonder about mental toughness after last week.

Dogs kicked 8 straight and still lost to us running away in the end.

What do we have to do to beat the Dees? they must be thinking. Or else recognising serious weaknesses not fixed and time is passing them by?

The Dogs have a crap, non existent game plan and were exceedingly fortunate to make the Grand Final last year. I would not be surprised if they missed out on the 8 this year.

History says they only have a 1 in 10 chance of making the GF this year.

And similar chance of making finals after a 0-2 start.

Easton Wood retiring last year was well overdue and Fritsch did him a favour but this issue not fixed and dogs no way have a serious finals defensive ssyetm or personnel group. How did Beveridge and his coaching staff spend their summer I would be asking if a dogs fan.

Weightman would have to be one of my most hated players. He got one goal, from a free kick, and I watched their finals game against Essendon recently and he kicked 4 goals all from free kicks, one of which the commentators couldn't work out what the free kick was even for, it was a bit like the one against us.

I can't stand that little mouth breather and was shocked when one of the commentators said he's everyones favourite and everyone likes to watch him play. I'm so glad we didn't pick him.

Really just a largely ineffective small forward.

When the chips are down we can always rely on nibbler pickett or spargo to wrave magic. Be it a goal or assist or tackle.

Weightman isn't in that class and is a proven non contributor when the heat is on.

Thanks. Confused myself with blues being significantly tested by dogs.

Blues and cats games will both be fascinating reality checks hopefully.

Brisbane impressive? If one quarter is enough then you can add Gold Coast to your list of impressive sides.

Melbourne, Sydney, Carlton and Geelong the four most impressive. The first two beat known quantities (Dogs and GWS). Reserve judgment on the latter two until we see how they go in Round 2 (Richmond wasn't very good and Essendon was appalling).

Good call on this. Dees and Swans for mine.

I reckon you can reduce even further.  Swans were impressive in coming back agaisnt a class opposition. Dees in control against the seond best team, not some middle of the road outfit. As The Age reported today, Dees, then daylight, then the rest (so far anyway)

Cats beat nothing, Blues bullied an undermanned, brave but past- it- now Tigers. Cats to be judged properly this week against Dogs.

Lions, struggled to overcome brave and injured Power. Big Deal.

That is one of the many things l love about this team which can be summed up as “selfless football” ie the most important thing is we win and it doesn’t much matter who does what as long as the end result is success.

Kossie is a classic example. He does a lot of his best work off the ball (aka his bump off the ball which led to Trac’s spinning goal from the pocket which set us alight in the grannie)..

Agreed, as was his shepherd in the 1st 1/4 last week that freed Langdon some space to kick that first goal.

Important cog in the team ethos.  And he's selfless like the rest.

Niall didn't say that. People on this site have a low interpretation skills at times.

What he said was Richmond was system first, talent second whereas Melbourne is talent first and system second. The implication for me is that system is equally important between the two clubs but that the talent is higher at Melbourne and the players know it. This lead directly into his "cockiness" comment.

People tend to think in terms of zero sum games, and this is a prime example IMO.

But Niall DID say the Dees "...are a little bit cocky..."

I'm happy to open up a discussion on the standard of journalism in this country, particularly AFL journalism.

But the case here of Morris reporting on team selection shouldn't fall foul of the issues above.

The idea that a player being dropped shouldn't be reported on because of mental health issues is IMO ridiculous. Let's assume Hunter is going through a tough time in some way. His being dropped was always going to be reported on, whether before the team was announced or the moment the teams dropped. He was always going to be a focus of the media.

Every week for the last few years journalists have reported on team selection issues hours or days prior to the official announcements. Just like they also report on injuries suffered, sometimes before the club formally announces it.

There is in my view very little wrong with a journalist reporting on team selection early, and Beveridge's response to it was wholly disproportionate.

If Beveridge was actually having a go at Morris for other issues (e.g. because of the way Morris handles himself generally, or maybe for the sorts of things the Whatsapp leak subsequently revealed), the way he did it was inappropriate.

At last a sensible comment in the later parts of this thread which has become a treatise on the pros and cons of jounalistic protocols. Thanks Titan.

Having experienced personally bullying from a News Corp paper by a journalist covering a story, him ignoring the facts and clearly following editorial policy of NewsCorp (you know- Coalition -good - ALP and anyone else - bad) I find the Hunter dropped just a story so trivial in the context of sporting reporting. Bevo is to blame here for that escalation.

Morris also confirmed it wasn't for discipline - which on Hunter's  history readers may have jumped to that conclusion. So Morris acieved something, and hence Bevo playing the mental health card was/is a red herring and a disgrace. Its not something to trivialise.

Everyone is missing and /or ignoring the real issue here - the downright trashing of the Fox reporter referred to in the audio.

Beveridge, Morris and the Leaker should think about what they unleashed here. Bevo owes her a call.IMO. He won't though.

Pedantic arguments on journalism belong on another site or give it its own thread.
