    Steven May's hamstring syas Hi!.

Malthouse said post match Hawkins consistently pushes opposing rucks under the ball and never gets called out by umpires. Unanimous on ABC radio Hawkins infringed in last 1/4 and got away with it because of name and status. A younger player would have been called. Umpiring claims professionalism in the AFL. Times like these its called into question.

Still with Selwood rested after only 3 games, it augurs well for rest of finalists late in the season against the cats (oldest team to have ever played in the AFL last night if thats a guide (most players ever over 30 on the ground too)

The Weed kicked more goals last week In a tight game than T Mac has kicked in all 4 games. T Mac is in poor form and should be dropped. Weed didn’t play well last night but can impact games more as we saw last week

I'd love Weid to have a longer go at it but your point about last week highlights my view.  Weid does it rarely at top level and can't be relied upon yet, if ever. One swallow doesn't make a summer.

Maybe this next block of 3 or 4 games can be his last chance to grab a position. But I don't think it will happen with BBB and Fritsch the go-to's .

I understand what you say about Weid but I am convinced Brown would have gone better. He straightens us up and doesn't seem to get in TMac/Fritsch's way as much as Weid does.

Nailef the key issue TU. Look at the games where bbb plays. So much clrar air for him and fritsch and even tmac.

    Weid clogs the centre

some highlights from page 2 of the pear bf post-game thread...

Lost our last 5, 4 of those at AO. But yeah, we're on the right track just need to work harder.

It was a dishonest performance, playing keepings off and trying to control the ball with slow sideways kicks in defence.

It was purposely orchestrated to keep the margin close, and for the coaches to pat themselves on the back with a 5 goal loss to Melbourne.

A few late goals when the Demons put the cue in the rack means nothing.

It was a pathetic performance, a team that is disconnected, poorly skilled with a dysfunctional forward line.

If you just looked at the score and saw that we lost by 32 points it doesn't seem that bad. In reality we should've lost by 10 goals. A goalless half was disgusting and something that Port has never dished up in the AFL before. The pressure on Ken continues to build.

A demon player almost broke sweat

That was the equivalent of a bye for the dees

It's a shame Melbourne couldn't put their foot down but I guess they got bored. Why bother injuring yourself against a bottom 2 side

Jeebus early April and the season's done. Who woulda thunk it

It wasn't just a goaless half.

It was  a goaless 2 quaters and 22 miinutes. Or 4 minutes short of a goaless 3 quarters.

That's the issue Port folks should be looking at.

    I didn't, can you elaborate?

I thought that our zone and positioning was fantastic tonight and we really set the trap well. No matter what they did, where they tried to shift, we had it covered.

I felt that Lever probably had something to do with that. He positions well, directs players around him and knows how to read and drop into space. During the game I felt he was having an impact on our whole ground defence compared to last week..but it's hard to tell on the TV where don't get full views of the set up.

It was in Maxy's post game on the ground.  He was asked what it was like having Lever retrun, and he made that  comment about Smith needing to be directed where to stand.  It was said in a humourous style, as Max does, but I reckon a bit of truth.  The Defence IS May/Lever.

Lever said he missed May bigtime in the JLT loss to the Blues earlier this year. They both operate asone in setting up and truly miss each other when one is out. Its as if they know what each other is thinking.  If one is out, that's more thinking the other has to do alone.

Obviously this doesn't apply to Salem and even Petty now based on his finals.

    Just read the 'Votes' thread.

Who would have thought we would thrash a team with Oliver and Petracca getting only 1 vote each from the 'trillion'* possible from about 25 DL'ers.

Have we ever won a game in recent times with neither among our best 6.  It is like they were rested for the game but on the field.

That must frighten the bejesus out of the rest of the comp.  Take both champs out of the game and still be thrashed.

Happy days for a team not reliant on any player(s):  Us.

    Quote of this thread LH.

And you can add the same for when we get the forward line connection working again. At last nights presser Rucci asked goody about the scoring behemoth in the PF and GF that was the Dees.  Goody said we are a work in progress and know we can improve.

Scary indeed for others when things click in the future games.

Mega Frustrated- gift kills where we could have won by 20 goals are so rare  this was a big missed opportunity.

Still very happy for the win, and I loved tehe deefence.

Not so sure. Forward line needs work and bbb back asap.  Others are just going.

Premiership standard defence safely in place.

Are any other Demonlanders having trouble getting seats for MCC members at the GWS game?

I can get them for Richmond and Hawthorn, but no luck for the GWS game.

Am I at fault, or Ticketek?

Had prolems yetsreday getting SMS seats from Ticketek for Anzac Eve,  but GWS game went OK  a few weeks ago.

Ticketek aren't what you'd call a perfect system.  Or even user-friendly at times.

requires some perserverance from the punters.

pear were good in rd 1 up until 3/4 time, hopeless in rd 2, good in rd 3 up until 3/4 time...

they have been significantly hit by injury to key position players in particular, but i fear a regular top 4 side who are facing a 0-4 start if they lose this thursday

Agreed.  Power were stiff to lose to Lions at the Gabba.

They aren;'t near as bad as portrayed by some and will be a hard game for the Dees.

All doom and gloom at bigfooty:

    • If Brown does miss, we'll at least get ten goals closer...
    • We may do better in this game. No expectations, we'll be rank outsiders and there'll be less crowd pressure.
    • It's deck chairs on the titanic after only 3 rounds
    • 25k ? Id be surprised if 20k turn up at this point.
    • I have been a member since 1997 and at the moment I would rather stick pins in my eyes then witness another week of that [censored].
    • Play the kids and see what they can do. We are done this year. I’m glad it happens this early in the season, so the club has time to search for a new coach.
    • I’d be surprised if we keep this under a 80 point loss.
    • A Dee-struction on the national stage will go down a treat. Ben Brown to kick another 10.
    • We are f’ed, gave away all out depth when we were back to back prelim finalists..Joke of a club at the minute
    • Max Gawn hasn't been killing 'em in ruck this year but once again Melbourne run two big men in Gawn supported by Jackson. It is amazing how other sides seem to be able to run two big men but we can't.
    • I am losing patience with Connor Rozee as he has talent but seems to have hit a plateau. If Duursma can get the drop so can Rozee. He can take Motlop with him.
    • I'm trying to envisage how Port can choose a 22 to win this game. Maybe if the Dees have a bad night in front of the big sticks, we might be a slim chance - otherwise 0-4 is a certainty.
    • Honestly we are no chance. It’s a matter of how much. Even with a full list and Petracca and Oliver rested, we still lose. Our only hope is to have each team we play affected by covid but remain clean ourselves.
    • My god we are going to get hammered.  Melb by 71 points.
    • Who ******* cares
    • I suspect this Melbourne side would have given any of the sides; great Geelong side of 07-11, hawthorn of 13-15, Brisbane and port of 01-04, a good shake.  So no chance we win. But you do get to see some of the game’s great players whoop us so…..

And for good measure, a hint of optimism:

    • I’ve got a strange feeling that we will win.  The reality is it really should’ve been a 5 goal win against the crows if we didn’t butcher so many easy chances and the crows actually missed.

My second most looked for weekly post. Thanks.

Joeboy's 3 word analysis is my favourite. This is a close second for laughs though.

umm,, perhaps because noone has said that .  Your clear implication was that vaccines are pointless.  The data shows that's wrong.  It was a vain hope that posting it would have any effect on your views, so I will desist from further replies and stay on topic. So,

I was vaguely hoping for a draw between Hawthorn and Carlton. But I wondered if late in the season I'd regret having at least 2 teams on points not divisable by 4.   Impossible to say at this stage I guess (and it didn't happen on the weekend).  But historically, have those 2 odd points ever caused grief or otherwise to us in our final ladder position?

Nice try though Sue. Well said.

Speaking as a +65 year old with 3 doses of vaccine.

Still got it. Few if any symptoms. No hospital.

    As the medical experts predicted.

Did i pass it on?. Maybe. But was happy to lockdown for 7 days to mimise risk to others.

Lining up for 4th shot in 4 weeks time.

    Go Dees.

I'm about to head to the G for the Bluebaggers/Poos & Wees match.

It's an interesting experience going to a match as a neutral. I suspect the highlight will be the afternoon tea. I know there will be sandwiches, party pies & liquified dust (which is supposed to be coffee). Not sure whether there will be scones ... hope so. I'm joining my MUCH OLDER friend in the 50 year section of the members.  (I don't qualify personally as I am much, much younger than him.)

Enjoy the day out. Safe in the knowledge there'll be 1 less unbeaten team at the end of the match.

Your problem will be who to support to make it happen.  or who do you hate least - Blues or hawks.

Really tough decision from where I stand but will be wathcing the game on the tele with that angle in mind.

Today, I hate the Hawks more.

I think it's more about lack of midfield pressure and lack of players coming back to fill Wright's leading areas.  May had him if it wasn't on the lead.

If Petty was in the side we would have been worth a shot with his extra height.

    Exactly .

Leading forwrads are stopped by team defence generally.  They always have the advantage of a split second decison over their defender.

Nevertheless May wasn't happy with his performance by the look of him after the game. True professional.

Tmac should have been switched onto Wright last night and Maysie spending a stint up forward for awhile.

I believe we need Tmac in defence sometimes as very big players can monster May ( Admittedly this us the first time in about 35 games Maysie has lowered his colours. Not a bad effort.

Would have been worth a try , But May did some great saving work and direction last night and his defensive instincts are elite compared to most, incl TMac

He gave away 100mm in height against Wright who is turining out well for the Bombers. (193cm  vs 203 cm)

Brown straight back. Weid holds TMac out. TMac either goes back or dropped.

Lever back. Hunt out I think.

We can’t get the four missing defenders back quick enough.

Your'e right , but last night was a credit to the system defence with a still-second string defence with May and Bowey doing their best to hold it together , incl great play by Gus.

Good job coaching team. 70 points against.

Last year the rule was if the Dees kick more than 65 points they win.

This year its up just a tad.

The cavalry can't come soon enough though.

I've retracted the germ tag and regret including it in my first post...but it's not as simple as 'we don't like the way he high 5s after a goal'. We get he's an excitable young player and I said, he's pretty good. That's exciting for him, Dogs fans and neutrals.

But throw in the playing for free kicks (he is absolutely at Lindsay Thomas level if not worse to the poster who said they can't see it) together with the over-celebration and it paints a picture of him being disingenuous, somewhat arrogant, and perhaps presumptuous and almost entitled.

It's hard to describe - but there's a level of affectation that makes it seem like he's not even celebrating for himself, rather just to make a scene and get under people's noses, as he himself knows he perhaps hasn't earned what he's got. Certainly not to the point where he can celebrate like he's the best of all time. He knows he's annoying and it's very off-putting that he embraces it seemingly as a character trait.

Put it this way - you're playing local footy and the opposition tackles you for a ball up. Everyone gets up off the ground and life goes on. Then this kid gets up in your face bouncing around whooping and carrying on about his teammate making a tackle. He doesn't direct it at you, but it's within sight and earshot and you know he's doing it at least partially to get your attention & annoyance. Now rinse and repeat, every game at every F50 stoppage.

It wouldnt take long for you to tell him to relax and calm down, failing which you'll probably run through him when you get the chance later in the game. He wins a free kick. He overcelebrates, and around we go again.

There are those who play in the right spirit and those who don't. Doing it under the guise of 'thats just Cody being Cody', which in these PC days means he is immune from criticism, makes it even worse.

He was the same draft as Koz and we did consider him closely. I was fan based on highlight videos as his talent is plain to see. It wasn't until I actually watched him over the course of a game that his behaviour became clearer. It has nothing to do with Koz - couldn't be happier he is ours.

Not everyone will get it as we all project our biases onto others, but this is what I see and what I find annoying.

A good summary of Cody here

SEN last night commented (I can't remember who) that Weightman is a KPP in a small man's body, and thus flying for marks ect but not being on the ground where he is needed.

In Kossie we got a true ground ball player with excitiemnt and pressure to boot..

Good teams need them - betts, Cameron, Stevie J , Cyril, and now Kossie.  Wweightman has some way to go to be of sustainable value.  Lst night he saved the Dogs but its something they can't rely on.

  18. Essential reading for today.  Wayne carey's article in this mornings Age on Luke Jackson.  Says it all .

"...Greatness is more attainable with greatness around you..."   and that Gawn, Trac , Oliver etc  help make Luke great.

He'll stay (IMO)  for the reasons Carey covers.   Big money will then await him as a 2-3 time flag hero. - and good luck to him then anyway.

CYB he will be wealthy wherever he plays. Over his career he could earn $6 to $12 million. For me there is no difference, so I would chase flags. And before you say I'm crazy consider how long and well you could live on $6 million well invested.

True Mandee.  But his status , and then perhaps resulting earning capacity, will be immeasurebly more as a triple premiership player than someone who won one at 19 and did nothing team success-wise after that.  Just looking at the long term marketing messages and strategy here.

for example, Luke Hodge, seen as an elder statesman now speaking with authority on the back of great leadership CV and 3 flags.

It also would not have helped that he walked into a club that was a complete disaster on and off the field.

Jackson would be hard pressed to find a club more stable or in a better on field position that ours right now.

Exactly.  Good luck to his manager selling the idea of now  joining Freo (why?) and Eagles (basket case on the slide).

But professionally he'll make the eagles move in 5 years  , with 3 flags under his belt, and all Dees supporter's best wishes, mine included.
