Might be hard to trade Garland on a 2 year deal. JKH has done a hammy. Hoping he can get back out there soon. There's still something to work with there I think. Played too well in his first year for it to be a fluke. Spencer is the other one I'd add. If he's often injured and not good otherwise then surely there's a mature ruck option in one of the state leagues or a delisted pick up. I'd even consider Zac Clarke from Freo as a free agent, as long as it's a short contract.

Early days, but at this stage I'd say we'd offer him for trade again and then if there's no interest we'd consider a rookie spot depending on how the list is looking for experience. He's a great guy and hard worker, but there might be a chance he's had enough as well. Plenty of issues with his body, so I doubt he has an easy existence to play AFL. I wouldn't mind keeping him on as a coach post career. Read the game well as a young player, that he couldn't change with it doesn't necessarily mean he's not a good footy mind.

Can't help but feel they had to edit out all the best bits. But I loved Bernie's leadership and positive direction. Setting up around the ground is so vital, you can see scores happening if one or two players are just a bit out. Tom Bugg next week please!

Salem was tight in the hip/hammy late in the game. The 6 day break and given he was in the rehab group as it was might see him miss. Vince would go to half back and Matt Jones to a wing I'd imagine. Just one to monitor if anyone gets to training.
-
The combination of the two would be the best 2nd ruck/forward in the game! I think the forward lines working well as the speed Frost, Watts and Kent bring to hit out to space opens gaps for others. But I also think at Etihad we aren't going to get that space and we'll need more marks inside 50 and link up play to score. Watts plays well deep at the G in space, but I'd rather him up the ground at Etihad, which is where Frost has mostly been. The best structure for horses for courses might be Frost out for Petracca if they are confident Petracca can give us enough forward pressure. But if they stick with Frost I can understand it. Frost is another option to play on the wing when Riewoldt goes there. He could start in his defensive forward role then move up and do short stints on the wing against Riewoldt to stop him getting a mismatch.

Beaten 2 out of 3 bottom 6 teams. Won 1 out of 2 likely top 6 teams. Haven't played anyone in the middle yet. Nor have we won interstate and so on. Huge game this week. Beat the Saints and we can make a case for being in the top 5 Victorian teams ahead of Saints, Tigers, Pies, Blues, Dons and behind North, Geel, Hawthorn and Dogs. Lose to the Saints and we won't have put a gap on the bottom Victorian sides yet, let alone worked out how we are going to win enough of our interstate trips.

I thought he did a lot of good work getting the ball (and his touches reflect that) and competing in the air. Needs to switch to chase mode a little earlier but that's never been the strength of his game. The fast pace of the game creates some chances for him but also means he has to link up in strange positions as well. Sounds trivial, but he doesn't have a Jesse Hogan to kick too either! If he nails the 2 shots for goal and cleans up the 2 turnovers by foot then he would've had a great game. Otherwise I'd say he had a solid game playing to his strengths and learning more about where he needs to improve.

He'll cop a fine for that. But Jack had a rolled ankle. Presuming Bugg knew that then he probably knew what he doing.

Jack Viney's square off on Rance
DeeSpencer replied to Vandenberger With The Lot's topic in Melbourne Demons
Watching it again, it's cowardly, but it's a forearm not an elbow or punch. There's a pretty important distinction there. Only so much you can down clipping a guy with you arm even if it's using his head like a basketball. If it was a clean elbow or fist it would be far worse. Rance will almost surely miss the Dixon match up against Port. That'll do me. -
Jack Viney's square off on Rance

They have the option to go direct to the tribunal if the criteria does not match. "Impact" I'm led to believe includes: - The medical result - The potential for injury - The physical force Based on potential for injury and force I'd say it's going to be more than low. But I don't really care. Rance has been a ball player and a good player for a long time now. This is nastier than Vince's cheeky elbow, but as long as Watts is ok I'm not out for Rance's blood. -
Jayden Hunt went running over to Salem who Vickery (that tough strong 6'6 pile of ......) decided to get in to. Was great to see a 2nd gamer stick up for his school mate! Then Dunny and Viney I think were right in to it. And that was the 2nd or 3rd outbreak of that particular melee.

Clever player with the way he just darts out of stoppages. Particularly when we were handballing around the back of them too often, which gave them a chance. Gawny was great tonight, but I thought Maric did a Jamar style job of getting his experienced body in the way and so making sure Max had to go to set spots most of the night. Hard to pick up live but I don't think we were as dominant in close as we could've been. Maric is experienced. Cotch for all the jokes can play. Martin dangerous. Miles a very hard worker. Grigg's played a lot of footy. Probably can't be too disappointed in that. So getting back to Edwards, I think we just have to make sure our young backline are on top of their set ups and position so we can't lose him at a stoppage. I really love Salem and Jetta getting dragged up to stoppages as I think they could be inside mids if they had to. Strong and clean in close. But Hunt and Wagner probably aren't used to that. And Lumumba we know is a potentially fantastic player in space but not great in tight spots.

Jones - has earnt this Viney - non stop effort Jetta - goes when needed McDonald - zone squadron leader Lumumba - zone squadron deputy Bugg - likes it hot Dunn - longer 't'went better Salem - slices and dices Gawn - all round quality Vince - brings lovely balance Wagner - modern day defender Tyson - yin to Viney's-yang Watts - efficiency creates confidence Frost - unpredictable and intruiging Harmes - finding nice rhythm Kent - spread all day Brayshaw - not even concerned Hogan - best was subtle Pedersen - complemented team-mates well Hunt - holding his own Kennedy - hard and smart Garlett - a pleasing return

It's the post match discussion thread. Not the cheersquad circle jerk. A great step forward. Fantastic effort as I said. Win or lost there's lessons from every game. Tomorrow in the review the message should be don't play with your food.

Ingo was a rock solid marking CHB. Tom McDonald might be heading that way. Big Mac, as in Anthony McDonald. Really honest depth midfielder with a good mix of run, skill and commitment. Might be more Harmes like. Last week Wagner played a bit like Clint Bizzell. Not so much in the air this week but lots of class disposal for Wagner today. Hunt is fast and I don't think we've seen the best of his speed yet. Clean by hand. Much stronger defensively than I thought, good overhead as he's deceptively tall. Not sure I've got a comparison from the 90's/00's yet for him.

Fantastic effort. Mediocre execution. We'll struggle to beat good teams playing as sloppy as we did tonight, but we'll be in the game with the effort. We just have to find the right balance between sharing the ball and overusing it. If we are out in space, don't go back in. If we are under pressure but running forward then kick to advantage instead of trying to find extra handballs. Our step backwards in the 3rd quarter was created by players trying to be more direct to make up for the first half where the overuse was prominent. The last quarter we found the balance again. Although we left a few goals out there/created a few hassles either trying to be too direct (Frost up and under kick that did Kent no favours), not pulling the trigger (the pass to Hogan that was off line and spoilt before the goal game from Tyson) or the opposite in trying to walk it in (Hogan smothered). Some other mental errors like lack of concentration (hello Tommy Mc 50) and getting sucked in to a 1/4 time fight that we can avoid.

Just putting it out there
DeeSpencer replied to blue and red in the head's topic in Melbourne Demons
Reads thread title. Thinks, surely not. Reads OP. Well ok then. No. Forget whether it would be a good or bad deal. The number 1 thing Roos has tried to build is culture. Any form of encouraging your star forward to leave is against that. And the idea that we need another number 1 pick is good for a giggle. It's the last thing we need.- 24 replies

Smart players never trust umpires. Plus you never know if someone's cheating and yelling out touched anyway. Spoil the ball through and worry about the call later. If the goal umpire called the touch 30m away then review it, but if a field umpire thought it was touched then unless they were hallucinating then I agree, just get on with the game.

He's 27, had a career best of 46 goals in an attacking side, he'll cost a lot of money and a high draft pick for a team that's traded away it's first pick already, he seems very happy at the Crows and we've invested heavily in Weideman, want to keep Hogan on a big deal and Watts is coming out of contract soon as well. Yes he'd fill a big hole. But I can't see it happening.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER

I was pleased to here Roos talk about the room for development but also how Clarry has won over his team mates by playing the right way. That would make me feel pretty chuffed as a young fella. You can see why Roos is well known as a players coach, he's been frustrated over the last two years but think his care for his players in genuine. -

Viney, Jones, Tyson. They need to be getting 80+ disposals between them, using them well, covering the ground in attack and defending and stopping the 3 best midfielders from the other side. They'll have help from a heap of players in the rotation but if we are to afford the luxury of Vince back, Vanders forward and not overdoing young mids it will probably be these 3 doing it. Click the box in the top left of the quote and then hit delete. Will get rid of it. Bug with the new site. -

It's hard to argue with a beautiful safe clearing handball. Just a matter of how risky we want to be. You're probably right, in that area of the ground the clearing handball is a wise decision. But in general Melbourne need to handball forward more and break out of packs, not go back behind them. Again, so many positives with him, I just think if he develops a bit of smoothness around the rough edges he'll get better and better. That's my main point. -

A very sweet handball, but the Salem kick is just as good if not better. Although next step for Clarry is probably to hold the ball in a bit more and get the exit out the front of the stoppage where Vince and Viney are or even sneak a tight handball to Jetta and run it out the open side. But that's nit picking. A bit more work on his left hand handball should be part of his development as well. I'm sure he's seeing both sides of the stoppage and has the vision. A good left will see him able to really open up the field. Even his right hand I think he holds the ball up and punches it a bit much. I think he can smooth it out a bit and make sure he's hitting team mates spot on. I find it exciting knowing that Oliver has a lot of traits that are really hard to teach - hardness, vision, agility, presence and still lots to work on with his body and skills (which are at a solid baseline as well, it's not like he's a mile off). -

Impact is hard to judge. But Brayshaw's tackling, hardness and direct style of footy was instrumental is us scoring against better teams I think. His impact was greater than his stats or talent. He lit us up at Geel, QB'day, North game, Tigers game. Even round 1 he made a big difference. Clarry has shown me some special abilities but Gus set the bar pretty high. I'd drop a footy in front of Clarry in a pack situation and he'd do some great things. Playing on him I wouldn't lay a finger on him. I'd roll a footy out in front of Brayshaw in space and I expect similar. He's such a natural tackler I wouldn't want to pick up the ball, and if he gets the ball he's so determined to get it on to a team mate in a good spot.
