Post Match Discussion - Round 12 (never in doubt)
Dr. Gonzo replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
One of the best parts of the game (other than the consistent pressure, tackling and four quarter effort) was the fact that we started with some of the same panicked handballs and stupid turnovers as the last few weeks but after settling into the game we basically eliminated them and reversed the trend so the Cats were the ones making those mistakes. Hopefully this game gives them real confidence and belief by showing them what it takes to win and what is possible when they provide consistent effort and implement the team structures. -

Yep that's what I was thinking since quarter time "if we get up would be the best win since that Eagles game in 98". With our draw there's no reason we can't come home with a wet sail like in 98 as well as long as we continue to play tough consistent four quarter footy (well I can dream right?) Agree with the rest of your post too. -

He was good - playing with a lot more confidence since coming back. -
Holy crap!!!!! What a bloody win, still not sure if real life or a fever dream? Best win since West Coast in 98? Seems like a similar kind of win.
-
That's why Roosy's paid the big bucks
-
How many times do we have up goals in the last minute of a quarter? That was poor by Macca then.
-
Motlop will be a problem
-
Better last 5 minutes Demons keep it up!!
-
Same old story though. Competing well and undoing the good work with poor turnovers and selling ourselves into trouble by overcooking the handball.
-
Jones has been shithouse so far - how many turnovers?
-
[censored] sick of this one way barracking in the commentary box. Geelong aren't impressive so far if we can stop selling ourselves into trouble all the time we may be in with a chance.

Yep let's see how Watts, Toumpas, Howe, Dawes etc fare with the teams hopes on their shoulders. With several players out they need to continue their recent form to keep us in the game today. If they drop off against better opposition with the expectation on them to lead then their last month of footy will be worthless (Toumpas aside)

And we'd lose anyway :s

MFC needs consistent hard-nosed players with a win at all costs attitude, no more "marketing opportunities". How have his marketing features helped us in the last 4 years? The people who don't want to trade Howe are probably the same who ridiculed those who wanted to trade Jamar (and others) when his value was at its peak. He has something, that's why he's a good trade option. You won't get anything for Bail or McKenzie but Howe might get us a decent player in return that will add more value to the team than he does currently.

Geelong at Geelong - why the injustice?

That doesn't mean we have to play there every single year! Granted we didn't play there last year but I think it was 2007 before that when we didn't play there? -
Well, yes. I'm making an assumption based on the GWS offer last year.
-
Stop looking at stats and watch the game. He played well against the Dogs and was pretty good against the Pies - that's probably two decent games he's played this year. He's a lazy footballer and picks and chooses when he wants to go. He's also too easily taken out of the game and doesn't offer much other than a pack mark and occasional goal. Doesn't crumb much and his opponent continually runs off him to create options downfield. He also seems to be getting in Hogan's way rather than taking his player away from the ball. Overall I won't be upset to keep him but he has currency with other clubs and if we can get a top 20 pick (or better yet a top 10 pick) in return and either on-trade it or use it on a mid we will have come out on top.

Take the top 20 pick and run

Hey I loved Allen Jakovich

Haha, I just googled "pessimistic old Melbourne supporter" and it was the first result. You really should have it as your avatar

Oh FFS, you act like we got thumped out the park. It was a 50/50 game, had the siren gone 30 seconds earlier we win. If you can't see the improvement since 2013 where now we expect to win games whereas back then we could only expect to not lose by more than 10 goals then I can't help you.

The last fortnight Watts has shown something he has rarely, if ever shown in the 5 years prior. A willingness to take the game on and evade through traffic. Hopefully he keeps it up and doesn't get discouraged when he gets caught with the ball (as he did on the weekend). He just needs to perfect his timing now, knowing when to get rid of the ball.
