DEMONLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Round 20
RalphiusMaximus replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
6 - Jordie. Nobody has done that to Ablett in a long time. 5 - Viney. Went in hard all day. Missed a couple of wrong-foot kicks, but in general was a star. 4 - Nate Jones. Same as usual 3 - Kent. Did some really good things, worked hard and provided an attacking option. 2 - Byrnes. Would be 6 if he kicked straight, but he still got 6 scoring shots. That's more than we usually see form our forwards. 1 - Spencil. Dominated the ruck and did some good work around the ground. -
Davis competed but rarely got the ball. He plays forward like a defender. If we'd had a decent crumber at his feet it could have worked for us.
-
Craig won't be coaching next year, that's for sure. How he can justify playing a spare man in defence at the end of that game I will never know. We needed to push forward and attack when we had the numbers and the play, but instead we persisted with a defensive setup and couldn't score goals.
-
Let's hope we come home with a wet sail and overhaul them. It could happen.
-
That hurts.
-
Damn. Another soft call to the Suns for a goal. They are giving them both ways, but I think we'd all like to see play on there.
-
Great advantage from the ump there. Waited to see the mark being taken before he called it.
-
Mr Teflon Ablett fends with an elbow to the face of trengove then gets tackled and fails to get the ball out. No call twice.
-
Viney's head taken off. No call.
-
Square-up there? I guess it was there. Happy to get a dodgy free our way.
-
And Strauss cops a boot to the face. Nothing.
-
Umpire's goal to start the half.
-
That was the arsiest goal of the year from Watts. Still great composure to slot it from 50 under pressure. Loved Kent's attack on the ball. Might get a game on the sidelines, but well worth it. Jack Viney is great in close and frees up Jones a little. Jordie is doing a great job tagging. All in all, it could be worse.

Can't find the article now, but they had all sorts of stats for defenders with reference to the AA team. Dunn has the best % in the league for winning 1-1 contests. At the time of the article he'd had three marks taken on him for the season.
-
Would love another Dunn. Best 1-1 defender in the competition.
-
Umps are very hot on Holding the ball. At least when one of the Melbourne players is tackled.
-
Don't suppose this is streaming anywhere?
-
I love that Gazza is complaining. He normally ignores pretty much everything thrown at him so we're obviously doing a great job on him. Anyone think we can keep it up? GC have 60% or so efficiency. If they start hitting targets it could get nasty.
-
The problem is that the majority of our players don't hurt when we get beaten. They just shrug and accept it. As long as that attitude persists we won't be improving.
-
Dunn is the best 1-1 defender in the competition at the moment according to the AFL's stats people. I'd say he's doing ok this year.
-
Was that Whelan? I've been thinking for years that it was Brown on Brown. Ah well. As for the rest, I stand by my point. This is a contact sport and on occasion people get hurt as a result of entirely legal actions. Suspending a player for an act which is allowed within the rules solely because it results in a opponent being hurt is a disgraceful decision and I'm pretty sure it would be overturned in a heartbeat if a player took it past the tribunal to an actual court of law.
-
And that right there is the basic flaw in their system. The same ct needs to have the same punishment regardless of consequence. If Player A knocks someone into the fence and they get up and keep playing but player B does it and they break their leg, it has to be treated the same as the result was an unforeseeable event. Either both players are let off or both are suspended. If they keep going with this idiocy of an injury makes the act illegal then tackles that result in ACLs will be up on charges. What about Nathan Brown breaking Nathan Brown's leg? That should have been a season long suspension according to the current system. Not only is it idiotic, but the current system is leaving them wide open to legal action should a player decide to stand up to them.
-
Won't even be looked at.

Who has to go - including football staff?
RalphiusMaximus replied to Soidee's topic in Melbourne Demons
Brian Royal is the obvious one. There isn't a single coaching portfolio he hasn't stuffed up since he came to the club. If they absolutely musty retain him it should be in an administrative role. I have no problem with Brown looking after the forwards. I think he's a good choice for the role. Rawlings I'm not sold on. He seems to do ok and the players like him, but he's not Wellman.
