Andrew Dillon is the Next AFL CEO
Agreed The CEO of the AFL is probably in the top 3 of all sports positions in the country. Its such a part of the fabric of our culture that you can't expect an outsider to waltz in and be across the huge number of issues that must be dealt with on a daily basis. Imagine a candidate from the US that had little idea about the sport or the country or the networks that make up the code. Its a home grown code that punches above its weight. An 'insider' was always going to be the favoured candidate but they would be remiss if they didn't take a temperature check of other candidates.

Kozzy Pickett Re-Signs for 4 Years
Remember that the football world thought Pickett was a 3rd rounder at best and that it was a stretch for Melbourne to take him with pick 12..Here's a clip from a phantom draft at the time... Without a doubt the big bolter of the draft, Pickett is now expected to go early in the piece to Melbourne after having been seen as a likely third-round pick just a month ago. Kudos to the recruitment staff for taking a bold step both with Jackson and Pickett here's another The Pickett selection was somewhat curious, too. Melbourne needs extra speed and class through the forward line, which Pickett can provide. But many rival clubs suggested a mid-first round pick was a reach for the small forward, despite his outstanding agility and speed. Could the Demons have gone for a player like Cody Weightman, who was the national carnival’s leading goalkicker, or Miles Bergman, who was one of the biggest risers in the second half of the year? Both showed more consistency in 2019 than Pickett.

Game plans, tactics and all that jazz
Teams try to attack Melbourne by using handballs, short kicks and overlap running. Thats the Collingwood blueprint. North tried this after the 1st qtr and attempted to hold onto the ball, switch play and keep possession. They ultimately didn't have the skill to do that for long enough. Collingwood does. But we have to recognise when teams do this and counter it. Thats why the Sydney game was important. they play this way as well and we beat them convincingly - albeit they were down on personnel.

Sad for you- POSTGAME: Rd 07 vs North Melbourne
a few years ago i remember Clarkson when the Hawks were 100 pts up sending a spare man behind the ball and I thought bad thoughts about him that he wanted to keep that 100 point margin. But I met a Hawks Board member who explained that Clarkson takes those opportunities to practice a 2 minute drill as if the game was within 1 kick In other words supporters care about the 100 pint margin or similar but clubs use these opportunities to experiment with set plays etc. Now I don't know if we did that - and if we did it was poor because NM kicked 3 goals - but maybe we found out what didnt work, or what we need to do to fix our set plays- POSTGAME: Rd 07 vs North Melbourne

Was great to see the team not take their foot off the pedal - bar the last 3 goals :( As good as the final margin was they worked hard defensively all night and even when Kozzie was streaming towards goal he checked himself and delivered a pin point perfect pass to a team mate in a better position. Could so easily have blazed away. For me that was particularly pleasing. I think the team were really focused tonight on team play and structure. Our defence has been patchy most of the season but this was a complete performance that cemented the game plan and was thoroughly disciplined by all. Now to Gold Coast and Hawthorn....- VOTES: Rd 07 vs North Melbourne

Ground ball is where teams like Coll, Syd, Ess try to beat us. If you kick high to our defence you will lose so the simple plan is to do what Rich did last night for 2 qtrs. Overlap h/ball, running and short kicks or dirty kicks to the Fwds. We need to get better at recognising when teams are trying that. And then combatting that tactic. North did it last year against us but most teams cant keep up the pressure for 4 qtrs.- Stats Files - 2023
- AFL Rules - pulling the ball under
I feel certain that the rule on handpassing used to be a fist hitting the ball from a stationary hand. None of this hand and palm both moving in the same direction or over the head two-handed 'throws' or worse, the Adelaide/Western Bulldogs 'flick' pass. Does anyone remember seeing that written in the rules ? And if so when was it changed?- PREGAME: Rd 06 vs Richmond
