WELCOME BACK TO DEMONLAND - DANNY HUGHES
hoopla replied to Pinball Wizard's topic in Melbourne Demons
----- I guess it is the "least speculative pick". But while there is a smaller downside - there is also a smaller upside. They know him well enough not to have put him on the primary list. There is an argument to say that the rookie list should be speculative. ( Seriously, I know there was some controversy about our obligation to him in 2007) -
Have you been to many games over the last couple of years? its our middle that has let us down. Thats where we have been getting smashed! ---------------------------------------- We've been getting smashed everywhere But we have any number of midfielders with potential. How many quality young talls do we have.? Watts, Martin, Newton? Jurrah?
-
He does sound very interesting. I hope he does play tall - because we really do need more quality KPPs on our list. We let several talls pass us by again - I still think our overall recruting strategy over the past two years has been too biased toward midfielders without the height or weight necessary to compete in the air

22-23 at least and not big enough to get his hands on the ball. Has a spectacular leap - but it takes him too long to regain his feet and he is not a reliable kick. Struggled to get a regular senior game at Sandy even when he was fit. -

Don't understand this. Not young, not tall...waste of a pick Someone tell me that we had a legal obligation to him after stuffing up his delisting in 2007. Why else would we take him? -
The AFL was right. If Richmond want Cousins they can take him. Then they can take their preferred youngster as a rookie and promote him to to the senior list while Polak is on the long term injury list... unless of course someone like Melbourne snaffles their preferred kid up first ( as per normal draft order) Richmond have no grounds for complaint. ( As for us - the only reason I'd think about Cousins would be if he'd bring us a generous sponsor. Otherwise he'd just keep a promising youngster out of the side while we develop a list)
-
Emma Q has us taking DeBoer who looks OK. From the AFL clips he certainly doesn't look like a bad kick. After that I just want us to grab a few young talls. I've seen Sibosado play. He was brilliant. I'd cry if he turned out as good as he could be and we missed him. He must be a bit of a head case - but he has heaps of ability. Fast, good recovery, excellent pack mark, good kick for goal. Worth the risk PSD 1. Melbourne- De Boer 2. Port Adelaide- Carr 3. Essendon- Skipworth 4. Carlton- Johnson 5. Brisbane- ??? Hope not Sibosado 6. Richmond- ???Hope not Sibosado Rookie 1. Melbourne - Sibosado

Jeff Chapman - wealthy past player
hoopla replied to Jumping Jack Clennett's topic in Melbourne Demons
Jumping Jack Clennett - you'got to be an Old Carey Grammarian to drag Jeff Chapman's name up. He actually played a few games with Hawthorn after his stint at Melbourne. Not sure he's going to be the saviour of the MFC - but if he's looking at charitable causes, may be he'll look our way -
Brocky needs another season or two developing his own game. The player who steps up under pressure - and sets an example in the tough going is Green . He makes good decesions and puts his body on the line Brucey makes too many errors .. and Macca is just past his best I'm not confident that they'll give it too him- but I reckon if I was a young player Green 'd be the one I'd want to follow
-
Those of us hoping that we might add a little height and weight to the list through the PSD and Rookie drafts won't get any joy out of those training with us. Only Ross (191.5) is more than 190 cm. I certainly hope they don't waste a spot on Hughes again. He must be 23 by now. He's not nearly consistent enough for AFL
-
Yes they did - but not as many holes as we will have unless some of the under-performing talls on our list are transformed during the pre-season. A couple of really good ruckmen can help cover weakness down the spine. Jamar, Johnson,Meeson or Spencer ( who looks promising in the ruck but can't kick) ? I guess I find it frustrating that year in year out we recruit midfielders - and when they fail to 'kick on' we recruit more midfielders. From Carey - Mckernan to Lloyd-Lucas-Fletcher to Keating- Brown to Jolley-Ball-Goodes to Cox-Hansen to Ottens - Mooney to Franklin-Roughead, talls have been part of the premiership mix. I am one of those who's seen Sibosado play - and I reckon he's worth a punt. Ideally you'd take him as a rookie - but if we don't take him in the PSD one of the others might. Now if he's our PSD pick - and we take a ruckman and a KPP (or two) in as rookies, I'll be much happier. If we fill the rookie list with more lightly framed players under 190 cm, then I'd be worried that we're on a long rod to nowhere.
-
Garland, Rivers and Frawley don't have the bodies to handle the physicality of those players - and Cheney is a small.
-
Well it seems that the the majority of those who read this site are comfortable that 9 of our last 11 draft picks have been devoted to developing our list of 'non-KPPs' ( unless you class Cale as a future KPP). We haven't really added a quality tall to our list since picked up White and Ingersen from other clubs ... except hopefully for Watts. Over the next few years we are going to face Brown-Bradshaw, Fevola-Kruezer, Franklin-Roughead and Mooney-Hawkins-Ottens. Even if Morton,Grimes, Maric, Woenamiri, Cheney Blease, Strauss, Bennell, Jetta and Bail all come good - we will struggle to match the physicality of these teams week in week out. Over the past few days, the experts (Quayle, Sheehan etc) have said that clubs like West Coast have done best out of the draft.I have not been alone in doubting the wisdom of our policy.
-
You miss the point. (i)The top 10 picks for the next three years at least are going to go to the new interstate clubs;and (ii) it is generally accepted that this was an unusually deep draft with an unusually high number of quality talls The fact that quality talls are hard to find means you have to take you chances when you have them.To get one - you are probably going to have to try 4 or 5 The facts are that a large proportion of draftees won't make it. I think I'm right in saying that of our last 11 draft picks only two (Watts and McNamara) are potential KPPs ( unless you want to count Cale) I don't think our recruitment policy is geared to the development of a balanced list
-
Think about it Teams with the option to put a couple of talls up forward - and with the option of combatting tall forwards with a couple of tall backs are better off than teams who don't. Our achilles heel in the good Daniher years was that we relied too much on Neitz up forward - and didn't have a quality tall defender Project forward three years - and for Neitz read Watts. Good talls are hard to find - and for the next three years at least the good talls are going to go to the Gold Coast and Sydney West
-
I hope you are right - but I am concerned that Jack Watts is only player we took more than 189 cm. It is a running game today but the difference between the top sides and the rest are the two or three talls the smaller sides can't match up on. If Rivers doesn;t get fit and Newton doesn't kick on... we are only going to have two or three blokes on our list capable of taking a contested mark in three years time - Watts, Martin(?) and Miller(?). There aren't many options - especially with an injury here and there. By taking five mid size runners, I think we took a major risk.We let the best group of potential ruckmen and KPPs to ever enter a draft pass us by. Wattsy'd better not get injured. I'm not convinced it was a great day for the MFC - even if all of our picks can play.
-
Sorry mate...... but it really does raise serious questions about our professionalism. Of all the possible explanations, there are very few that don't call into question the quality of the clubs "due diligence" on important appointments I agree that we must try to stay positive - but we can't just shut our eyes either
-
This Oswald fiasco is a real worry. You've got to ask some very serios questions. Perhaps the guy is a [censored]...perhaps he realised the job was above him...perhaps the club realised he was a dud......perhaps the cub made a premature announcement..? How on earth did we pick him and announce it in the first place then? Total mismanagement!!! The alternative is that the bloke is a gun with high standards - when he saw what he had to work with , he decided to get out fast..? That would be a disaster in itself !! Either way this is grounds for real concern. I knew we had serious money problems and a very ordinary list - but I kept faith that we were setting up good processes in the football department and that Jim, Scwabby and CC had the ability to move us forward. This debacle makes me wonder
-
Riddles was a gun- absolutely passionate about the MFC as player ,coach and administrator. I trust that his memory will not be trnished by his association with the proposed merger - because he genuinely belived that it was in the best interests of the Dees to take over the Hawks A man of courage and integrity. A really great Demon My thoughts are with his family.
-
Hang on...isn't Peter German effectively replacing Chopper Lovell as far as Melbourne is concerned? He isn't going to be a full-time Development Coach for Melb listed players!!
-
If this guy was the ideal midfield candidate, his appointment would have been announced the day after Paul Willians resigned. Instead we were told the Dean Bailey was "looking for a replacement". He might be good - it the manner of his appointment makes it look very much like a second best 'money saving alternative' The key question is :- "Are we going to get a replacement development coach?" If not it's a worrying cut back in our football department
-
I don't know why a 30 year commitment is such a big deal. There is absolutely no point in going out there at all - if it is not to build a long-term supporter base in a growth corridor. If we are going to 'umm and arr 'about it - we might as well give the whole thing away. We desperately need a permanent home with permanent facilities-. If we are not prepared to commit to Casey, then we should shelve it and find somewhere else - but for goodness sake let's hurry up . We've been hopping from ground to ground for 50 years!
-
We have no choice but to keep faith with Deano...the fact is that he inherited a sub-standard list. It would be nice if we could get a ruck expert in to help with the midfield. We need some sort of genious in there to train 'One Mark' Jamar( unless Meeson somehow comes good !)
-
How's the business plan going guys and when we will we hear more about it? It would be nice to hear something positive from the MFC before Christmas, beside the draft. I wait with bated breath. Cheers
