When you don't make an offer, how exactly do you get 'screwed'?

This thread would have been stupid when the draft was still going. It's even more irrelevant now.

The alternative is to look at trading Jamar in 2012 or 2013 and building our ruck stocks around Gawn (and Martin). Keeping Jamar and losing Gawn is like repeating the White/Jolly scenario.

Finally .... the distracting spotlight will be elsewhere.

Eighteen teams are going to make the 8 next year. -
Fevola playing in Darwin. Perfect cultural match

But the issue is whether Clark at #12 is a better choice than the 18-year-old we'd get at #12 ... in a compromised draft after GWS has picked the eyes out of it.
-
Actually he turns 24 next week (DOB 19.10.87). He's a player who could change the whole dynamic of our team, especially the forward line ... give the opportunity for Watts to play his best further up the ground, and for Howe, Petterd, Jurrah etc. to be taking the 3rd and 4th best defenders. I'd throw plenty at him ... pick #12 plus.

Nothing wrong, but people here were implying our bid was somehow better than the Crows, but GWS took the Crows bid. If that is the case, it's not an 'auction' (to the highest bidder'), but a 'preferred sale'.

Firstly, I don't get the idea of it being a fair "auction" if GWS themselves determine what's the best bid. Who works out whether 10 and give back 14 is better than 12 and give back 25? Secondly, isn't the complicating factor that these compo picks are determined by finishing order in the year they're taken? That makes the picks much more speculative. If Adelaide finish bottom next year and we finish, say, 7th, isn't their compo pick then worth a lot more?

I don't know that picks back are worth that much comparatively. Clearly GWS rate Adelaide's #10 much better than our #12. It means only two other clubs (Port #6 and Brisbane #8) now have a pick inside the first 11, and pretty much gives GWS free rein. I'm not arguing too much with you about the relative value of the picks, I'm just sick of the moans about "not getting the job done" without considering the price paid.

And it wasn't enough. It appears that throwing in another compo pick was the only way to really get it done i.e. beat Adelaide's offer. That's far too much imho, and therefore people shouldn't wail on about "all hype and ending up with nothing" .

The only ones hyping it up have been those suggesting we throw everything at Crouch -- pick #12 and two compo picks ... effectively three first round picks ... for one player who would at best go top 5 (with one pick) in 2012. GWS end up with even more 2011 draft picks (#4 and #10) to add to 20-somethings like Scully, Palmer, Davis and Ward. I'm still wondering where their big-bodied experienced players are going to come from.

Many of them are based on songs that first appeared on stage and became 'patriotic' afterwards. Melbourne's song was based on You're a Grand Old Flag, and was a tribute to the US flag. It was written for the musical George Washington Jr by George M Cohan in 1906. Here's another archive recording. No banjo. The chorus was: You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'neath the Red, White and Blue, Where there's never a boast or brag. But should auld acquiantance be forgot Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

The DeeTVOfficial one is better. But they're so close, who cares? I'm not going to lose sleep over a bit of remastering.

Melbourne looks relatively tame. I would have cringed if I came from St Kilda. That was a terrible image to portray after the events of 2011. While I'm at it ... Campbell Brown, please go. You're such a jock.
-
Me too. You need to look at what we used to get to put it in context. I can't see that Matt Burgan is any worse at presenting than Andrew Maher, 'Fitzy', Dave Hughes or James Brayshaw, who seem to hang around on more mainstream media talking about football. Even Bruce McAvaney gets shrill.
-
I don't understand your comment. The media want to know about the football, like all of us. They want to talk to players and coaches. I presume all the Melbourne departments talk to each other.
-
Interesting that on One Week at a Time last week, they rated Melbourne, along with Collingwood and the Kangaroos, as the three most approachable clubs in the AFL from a media perspective. (They rated St Kilda worst as a 'nearly-closed' shop, and Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton as being very hard to get information from.) Sure much of it might be 'spin' but there's nothing injudicious about it, including the use of social media. There's nothing wrong with being approachable if you want positive press and to build favourable media relations.

Convince me Jack Fitzpatrick will make it
mauriesy replied to DeeSpencer's topic in Melbourne Demons
Missing the point. It's not whether Dawes is a star or locked into Collingwood, it's how he took four years to develop into a serviceable, useful bigman who has some currency. It's a route some are not prepared to provide for Fitzpatrick, apparently. -

Martin, Jamar, Garland, Frawley, Watts, Gawn and now Fitzpatrick. They've all been given the 'dud and delist' treatment here early in their careers by posters who don't understand the development required to get tall players up to AFL standard. -

We've had threads about how good it would be to recruit a big power forward like Chris Dawes. He was Collingwood's pick 26 in 2006. He spent most of 2007 recovering from a knee reconstruction, played six games at the end of the 2008 season, then only four matches in 2009. Then he wasn't picked for the first four matches of 2010. But after that, he played 20 matches including the two 2010 Grand Finals. Imagine if Collingwood made a 'tough call' after three years on their list, and delisted him for being such a 'dud'? -
Please do. The mis-spelling really offends my sensibilities.

How does Maxwell cope at the Pies hanging around off the ball all the time?
