Victoria bids for 2026 Commonwealth Games

    Benita Kolovos

The Victorian government has entered exclusive negotiations to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The premier, Daniel Andrews, on Wednesday announced the state government would spend the next couple months working with the Commonwealth Games Federation to assess the viability of hosting the event. He said:

We are the sporting capital of our nation. We have all that is needed to make an event like this fantastic success for us and for everybody, right across the commonwealth.

While the 2006 games were held in Melbourne, Andrews wants the 2026 event to be held across regional Victoria:

It’s not just about rerunning what was done back in 2006, our vision is for this to be predominantly a regional Victorian space. It’s about taking this amazing competition across many different sports into regional cities and towns.

"Hmmm .... let's think ... we're too old? .... no, we are too old. Melbourne got lucky? Nah ... umpires are terrible ... nah, that never flies ... Corona virus? But we've all been tested. .... hmm .... virus ... we got hit with a virus ... Got it. We were affected by a mysterious virus. Measles? Malaria? How about good old gastro? We got hit by gastro. Several of our players were affected pre-game by gastro. Okay, I think I can make this work."

Ahhh yes Cards.  The chances of copping a fist behind the earhole or a swift one to the guts was pretty much guaranteed against those apes.  I remember the heavily tattooed McSweeney brothers as particularly nasty individuals.  I had to wait a whole year to repay the favour to one of those bustards.

In those days (early 80's) there was only one field umpire.  I just happened to play cricket with the guy who was umpiring my revenge game.  I played in the middle and teed it up with the umpire to look and see where my opponent and I were standing and then he would ensure that his back was towards us as he bounced the footy to start the game.  The ball was bounced and the objective achieved.  The umpire of course saw nothing.

You can only imagine what it was like in the 70's, oh the memories.

Lads I was “lucky” it was the Southern Football League and not the old Federal League from what i was told.

What are you trying to say? I only played juniors there but my cousin played seniors and went alright. Mind you it is the only place I saw mothers and sisters jump the fence. The club rooms were always an interesting place after a win. Yes, I went to school with the Henwoods

Some of the lads would be cherry ripe at training on Thursday to only have a mystery 24hr flu on the Friday if we had to travel at to Dovey. They’d be right for a few beers on Sat night or Sunday though…

One the biggest punch ons over I’ve ever seen was with Dovey, finals at Caulfield park in 04, was mental.

Yes, and more people should. Anyone who has read my posts on here would know I have a very low opinion of the "media". Neroli Meadows has me thinking not all media/ people are created equally. This is raw and honest interviewing without judgement or sensationalism for "points" (read clicks).

Ultimately a "bogan" from Frankston ( Somerville) can teach us all a lesson in humility, reality and acceptance. At the same time giving an understanding of the importance of support and appreciation of a situation. For clarification: I'm a product of "Dovfton" so I can use the adjective "bogan"  with some authority.

This podcast should be required listening , not necessarily for Dee's supporters but for anyone who is  battling with their  circumstances/emotions/ inability to move on.

On a very Melbourne FC point of view; I must emphasis the "Melbourne Way". Anyone who listen's to this podcast should be taken by the honesty and in turn support of a quality individual that results in a wonderful premiership player and a wonderful role model to show the way.

I played footy against Dfton, without fail a few lads would come down with the Dfton flu on the night before a game.

Thanks I’ll have a listen, Meadows has always struck as good at her craft.

In my season rewatch I reached the prelim final last night. Unlike most games where I watch one quarter an evening this one I watched in one sitting.

It is arguably the most comprehensive performance of the season. Other than missing a few gettable goals in the second? quarter it was near faultless.

The GF was special and no one will forget that 35 odd minutes of domination but I think this game was the pinnacle performance wise.

Obvious kudos to Max but the performances by Brown, Spargo, Petty ANB..the list goes.... on are what should stand us in good stead in the coming season.

I’d have to watch them again but I felt the rnd 12 Brisbane game was our most complete, they were up and firing, have us a real contest… Cats were terrible the Prelim, god I love it!! Long may it continue.

    Thanks PF.

youve taken training reports to another dimension.

were you viewings from an elevated position? What security measures were in place.

i do love the fact that there is training with intensity, that seems to me the realisation of requirements of premiers.

Intergalactic planetary… another dimension… another dimension… well now don’t you tell me to smile…you stick around I’ll make it worth your while…

What tough decisions I’ve got to make….

oh chit he’s staring right back at me.. say what.. oh nothing Maxi, you’re looking a million $$$ mate, can’t wait to see you in action this season keep up the good work mate, do you mind doing some goal kicking practice now buddy, off you go…”
