Farewell Dean Kent
I really hope we're not playing inside mids like Jones and Tyson on the wing again in 2019... If the Saints have offered 3 years and we've offered 1 year then its a no brainer for Kent. Struggled to be consistently available but he has pace which we need more of in the team.

Caroline Wilson banned from Demon function
Self indulgent response by the club. Makes the club look petty and small. Should be fixed ASAP.

Pies Gone Past Us ??
Pies have a better balance between inside and outside than we do. Part of solution is to retire Lewis, not play inside mids Jones and Tyson on the wings and replace with outside hard running types. Emergence of De Goey and Stephenson has been important.

Jordan Lewis is absolutely cooked, never pick him again
What are his 2018 positive onfield attributes? Lets see: Slow Ill disciplined Lacks composure Unreliable disposal Struggling to see above attributes warranting a place in in any AFL team's 22.

Jordan Lewis is absolutely cooked, never pick him again
Lewis is a great of Hawthorn - 4 flags and a BnFin a flag year - but the game has passed him by. Treacle slow, ill disciplined and with ever worsening composure and disposal. Wonder exactly who Goody thought he could match up on in Eagles forward line. I could not find one. If he wants his 2019 dollars we tell him he'll play entire season for Casey. Hopefully he retires without a settlement for 2019 contract.

Match Preview and Team Selection - Preliminary Final
I like Smiths height. pace and leap as an in but would've dropped Tyson and kept Fritsch in the team. Tyson is an inside mid playing out of position on the wing. Its not like we are short of contested ball winning players so I would prefer a more natural hard running overhead marking wingman to an out of position inside mid, especially as we are playing Jones on the wing and Lewis on the half back flank.

Farewell Jesse Hogan
Hogan may be big bodied but he is not a contested marking beast. Does not read the high ball so struggles to get in a good position. Does not have a good standing jump. Is not a one grab overhead mark. All of these limit his effectiveness as a marking target close to goal. Having said that he has good endurance, reads the play and passes the ball well so is ideally suited to a high half forward role. I'd love to see him playing in that role with Weid and Tommy Mac rotating deep. He's said feels pretty settled in Melbourne and after experiencing some years it'd be hard to forsake the Dees when they finally have potential to play finals consistently for a rebuilding Freo side and the increased travel load. But the lure of home and undoubtedly big dollars is always there. I'd only entertain a trade if he requested one.

Dom Tyson - what's wrong?
Tyson is an inside mid playing as a wingman. One paced, can win his own ball but often gets caught in possesion, inconsistent disposal. If he is not picked in the team as an inside mid then for mine he does not have a spot in the team. We need more pace and hard running on the wing. It is not like we are short of contested ball beasts that we need to sacrifice outside run to play an extra inside mid.

Changes v Hawthorn - Semi Final
We need to release wider from the contest than we did against Geelong. Too often our release handballs were to a player about to be tackled. I would bring in Kennedy-Harris for Tyson. Tyson attributes and instincts are primarily those of an inside mid. JKH is a much more natural winger than Tyson. Does not get sucked into the contest when we need him to stay out and provide an offensive release to player in space or or a defensive player shutting down an opponent who could be released into space. Also tracks back to cover for defenders who've left their man.

Key tactical issues v Geelong
Vital that Dees judge when its their role to go into contest and when its their role to stay out to be an attacking release option or defending Cats release option.

The search for a big man ...
Can't see us playing 2 rucks in the Tiger Small Ball era. Weed is clearly our best bet as forward/relieving ruck. Can't see Preuss wanting to join a team where he won't be number 1 ruck or in contest for number 1 ruck. Has he shown enough as a forward to be forward/ruck?

The search for a big man ...
Unfortunately Marshall has shown too much promise this year.

Well I watch Jesse play. Its not percentage play to kick long to him unless he is on the lead. Does not read the ball in the air. Does not get in the best position. Does not jump at the ball. Often does not get his hands to the ball. Does not take too many 1 grab marks. All in all these attributes will always limit his effectiveness zero to 30 metres out from goal which is where a full forward/key forward should be at his best and where they differentiate from small and medium forwards. More generally Jesse does not have a repeatable goal kicking technique and his positioning and leading patterns need work. Weidemann can jump at the ball and will get his hands to more high balls.Has been in good from for Casey. Of course we are in the RIchmond Small Ball era so a mid/small may come in.

The Blowtorch on Jordan Lewis
Just too slow.

Farewell Jesse Hogan
In your mind what are the attributes of a key forward and how do Hogan's attributes match?
-
Farewell Jesse Hogan
Hogan is not a Full Forward. If you are playing Full Forward you need to be able to read the flight of the ball in the air to get in the right position, have speed to gap opponent in 5 to 10 steps, jump when flatfooted and take one grab overhead marks. These are all attributes Hogan lacks. It also helps to have an easily repeatable goal kicking technique! In essence Hogan's attributes are much more suited to playing as a mobile medium forward. Unless he is matched up to a midfielder kicking long and high to Hogan is not a percentage play.
-
The Incredible Hulk - Jesse Hogan
I see Hogan as a better mobile forward than full forward playing deep. He does not jump at the ball when flatfooted and he is not a great 1 grab mark both of which limit his effectiveness as a target man for long kicks inside 50. Skill set more suited using his endurance as a mobile high half forward.

Mitchell coming back to Victoria
Hopefully with Lewis as his assistant!

Changes vs Adelaide
Jordan Lewis should be dropped. Just too slow to be a medium defender and does not have the skillset to be a defender. Not a great spoiler or tackler. Not all midfielders can play in the backline in their twilight years. Still as a great of the club we must nurse him to 300 games! Which Adelaide Half Forward will put 5 metres on Lewis in 10 metres and snag a goal this week?
-
Who do we realistically target for a trade?
There is a place for a winger sitting about 5 to 10 metres off the contest awaiting a release handball or shutting down a similarly loitering opponent. I know we prefer to release to a player about 1 metre away who is about to be tackled but I reckon above might be way to go.

Our workrate
What value is Lewis adding on field? He had a Saint hemmed in on the Members wing boundary line who must've pulled a Houdini move cause next minute Lewis had not moved and the Saint was running along the wing towards their forward 50. Every opponent knows Lewis can't catch them to tackle. That they can run away from him. That he won't run and carry because he knows he'll be run down. That he is a transplanted(pun intended) inside mid who is not great at spoiling. In short forwards across the league are hoping that he'll be their matchup. There is no onfield role for Jordan Lewis at AFL level in 2018. He's a 4 time premiership player who has played on a season too long and is now capable of not much more than guarding space.
