you have to feel sorry for the afl. they have only had all of this year to decide on the brownlow if the appeal against cas was not successful (as widely expected) and now they need just another month to just have a meeting. running a footy comp is such hard work and people expect too much of them

Good point ... and the strange thing about this is that back in January when the CAS verdict was announced the AFL immediately announced (and therefore without a need for a meeting to be held a month later during which time all and sundry could deliberate on issues of fairness, the impact on other clubs, the competition and the game) the rules that would apply to Essendon to enable it to cover for their missing players and even the issue of how their  absence would impact on the draft (as far away as November).

The rules all gave the club that was responsible  for the plight of the guilty players an advantage while the other innocent clubs that now also had guilty players on their books no rights in regard to replacing those players.

This is yet another example of the embarrassing way in which the AFL competition is being run these days.

  2. Today's trade action:-

    • Richmond has signalled its interest in Geelong midfielder Josh Caddy as part of any potential deal for Brett Deledio.

    • GWS forward Cam McCarthy is officially a Docker on a three-year deal after Freo today used pick 3 to reach a deal with the Giants.

    • Daniel Wells has joined Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent after accepting a three-year deal with the Pies.

    • Hawthorn forward Luke Breust won't be leaving the club this season in any trade, but admits he was "rattled" by Ospeculation he might be traded as part of a deal for Sun Jaeger O'Meara.

    • At least six clubs have expressed an interest in out-of-contract Adelaide midfielder Jarryd Lyons.

    DONE DEALS SO FAR:

Tyrone Vickery moves from Richmond to Hawthorn as a restricted free agent

Cam McCarthy, pick 7, 34 and 72 move from GWS to Fremantle in exchange for pick 3.

  4. Belatedly, yesterday's trade radio highlights. I can't see how it's possible for Rockliff to kiss and make up with Brisbane after the way he's been carrying on. Should we go after him?

    • Tyrone Vickery has become the first player to make an official move this off-season, after Hawthorn tabled a free agency offer for the Richmond ruckman. The Hawks offered Vickery a two-year deal, with the Tigers having three days to match the offer.

    • Adelaide veteran Scott Thompson will play on for a 17th season after signing a new deal with the Crows for 2017. Thompson will also make a transition into coaching as part of the one-year extension, taking on more unofficial coaching duties, as well as a playing role.

    • Western Bulldogs midfielder Lin Jong has ended trade speculation by signing a new two-year deal with the premiers. Jong had been heavily linked to a trade this off-season, but decided to stick with the Bulldogs, despite heavy interest from the Gold Coast Suns.

    • The future of Sydney midfielder Tom Mitchell will become clearer by Monday, with the 23-year-old set to meet management this weekend. His manager Phil Mullen told NAB AFL Trade Radio today that Mitchell was yet to make a decision, but would know by Monday as to whether he would seek a trade, most likely to Hawthorn.

    • The future of Brisbane captain Tom Rockliff still isn't clear, with the Lions today confirming they had yet to make a decision on his future at the club. Rockliff is set to meet with new coach Chris Fagan in the coming days, in a meeting which will prove pivotal to him remaining at the Gabba.

Emma Quayle's AFL National Draft Combine Harvester is always a fantastic resource when referring to the leading draft prospects.

And Kevin "Shifter" Sheahan discusses who Melbourne might be interested in with pick # 26 (except that it's now pick # 27 thanks to the AFL's gift to the Lions and there's every chance we'll trade it anyway).

The Shifter story is a bit of a puff piece and I wonder why it was published at all. It's fairly common knowledge that we're going to give away a second round draft pick for Hibberd and we have limitations in regard to who and what we can trade. Until our draft position is cleared up this is all fairly meaningless stuff.

  6. Trade Radio News

    • Hamish Hartlett has stunningly backflipped on a move to have him traded from Port Adelaide. After meeting with several clubs in Melbourne this week, Hartlett's manager Michael Doughty today told NAB AFL Trade Radio his client wished to remain at the Power. • The future of out-of-contract Western Bulldogs midfielder Koby Stevens remains up in the air, with the 25-year-old considering a move to a third AFL club. Stevens' manager Ned Guy told NAB AFL Trade Radio today that discussions were continuing with the Bulldogs, but Stevens would also be searching for potential opportunities elsewhere.

    • Don't expect the Dion Prestia and Jaeger O'Meara trades to be done anytime soon, with Gold Coast Suns footy boss Marcus Ashcroft today telling NAB AFL Trade Radio they were still a long way from being finalised. Ashcroft said Richmond had not yet offered its first round pick for Prestia, while Hawthorn had not discussed any players they were willing to trade for O'Meara.

    • St Kilda says it won't be trading ruckman Billy Longer this NAB AFL Trade Period. Chief operating officer Ameet Bains telling NAB AFL Trade Radio today that Longer had a two-year contract with the club and that he was a required player.

    • Essendon has been contacted by at least four clubs regarding trading for its prized number one draft pick this year. List manager Adrian Dodoro this morning told NAB AFL Trade Radio that they were unlikely to do a deal for the pick, unless something extremely attractive was put on the table.

His manager Jason Dover today told NAB AFL Trade Radio that Hill had his heart set on moving to the Dockers, however, the club might have to wait to secure more draft picks before being able to offer anything suitable to the Hawks in a trade.

    • Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric will be at Punt Road next season after agreeing to a one-year contract extension with the Tigers. The 30-year-old had been linked with Collingwood, but elected to stick with the Tigers for a sixth season.

    • Geelong triple-premiership player Corey Enright has officially announced his retirement. The 35-year-old Geelong games record holder will finish his career after playing 332 AFL matches.

    • Essendon defender James Kelly appears likely to play on in 2017. His manager Tom Petroro today telling NAB AFL Trade Radio that he was confident Kelly would remain at the Bombers next season.

Steele will attend the GWS best and fairest count on Friday before making any decision about his future. 8. Highlights of today's Trade Radio:-

    • Melbourne forward Jesse Hogan has signed a two-year contract extension to remain with the Demons until at least the end of 2019. The West Australian was due to come out of contract at the end of next season, with heavy interest coming from both the Dockers and the Eagles via a potential trade this year. However, Hogan put any speculation about his future to rest with today's contract extension, which was finalised at 7.30pm last night.

    • Another WA key-position player has resisted the tempation to move home, with GWS ruckman Rory Lobb re-committing to the Giants until the end of the 2019 season. • New Adelaide football boss David Noble has provided key updates on midfielder Tom Tockliff, as well as Pearce Hanley in an interview with NAB AFL Trade Radio.

    • The future of Melbourne forward Chris Dawes remains in limbo, with Melbourne refusing to commit to the 29-year-old. Dawes played just six games this season, with Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney telling NAB AFL Trade Radio they might wait until after this year's NAB Trade Period before making a decision on his future at the club.

    • He's got rid of his beard, and now Jimmy Bartel is set to make a decision on his future. Highlights -

    • The Western Bulldogs and Collingwood have already had meetings over the Travis Cloke trade with a late-third or fourth-round draft pick expected to get the deal done.

    • The Bulldogs are hopeful of retaining midfielder Lin Jong, who has attracted interest from Gold Coast.

    • Several out-of-contract Sydney Swans such as utility Dean Towers and ruckman Toby Nankervis remain in limbo ahead of the trade period.

    • Jarryd Lyons wants to stay at Adelaide and is considering an offer from the Crows.

    • Clay Smith is expected to re-sign with the Western Bulldogs this week after being part of the premiership team on Saturday following three knee reconstructions.

And from the trade radio site:

Travis Cloke is willing to more than halve his pay packet to join 2016 premiers the Western Bulldogs next season. Cloke's manager Paul Connors told NAB AFL Trade Radio that Cloke is willing to forgo his lucrative one-year deal at the Pies in order to make a fresh start at the Bulldogs.

Daniel Wells is yet to make a decision on his future, with the Kangaroos midfielder weighing up options from several rival clubs. Wells' manager Liam Pickering confirmed the Cats "had some interest" in Wells, who has been offered a three-year deal from the Pies.

Port Adelaide general manager of football Chris Davies says the club is taking an open approach to this year's NAB AFL Trade Period, saying they are open to potential moves for their star contracted players. However, Davies said the club would have to think long and hard about any potential move with arch-rival Adelaide.

  10. I think by and large we were very brave with our selection. In particular, the game against St Kilda at Etihad could have been much closer and possibly a win had we played Lynden Dunn and possibly Col Garland that day to add some experience and strength in defence.

    What saga ?

I believe the saga might have been the long running so called "tanking" investigation that abruptly concluded with a settlement agreed upon by the parties involved to avoid court action. The investigation lasted several months and was accompanied by a lot of noise and allegations mostly unsubstantiated about the activities of the club.

I don't gamble.....but just joined Sportsbet and grabbed 101/1 for the Dees to make the 8...

Had we won the game in Perth a few weeks ago, I would have been reasonably confident but the odds are now too great.

  14. Collingwood is a gift that keeps on giving. There were times last night when they got on top and I thought about their big scalps this year and how they've been lucky to have played against those teams at the right place and the right time. The Doggies have been really in trouble with injuries and were ripe for the picking but they got up ... bless them.

The most damning statistic underlining Melbourne's recent history in games against Fremantle is the last six scores against them ~

    40, 40, 38, 34, 50, 54.

We bolstered the average considerably in our two encounters last year but it still sits at a shade under 43 points a game or a goal less than the Demons' total in the second quarter against Adelaide last week.

It goes without saying that we'll have to be well above average if we're going to win tonight.

In that case, I'll go for Dees to win by 43 points.
