  1. Leigh in big league I like recruiting players such as Williams, partly because it is they who test the mettle of your coaches. If a kid who hasn't come up through what is now the traditional pathway can be turned into a power forward at the elite level it would represent an fantastic bonus for the club. Against that is the fact that the chances of it happening would have to be statistically very low. Still, these are the things that I really look forward to when the club drafts a player.
  2. From MelbourneFC on Twitter: This is apparently the last training session for the year. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could find out the time and place for training when it resumes in January which should be my first chance to see them in the pre season.
  3. We really shouldn't be wishing ill on young players who have been drafted to play in that godforsaken hole. They already have to suffer the indignity of being part of a shonky outfit and having a dipstick as a coach. And who knows, someone like Patton might want to come back home when his two year stint at Bleaktown runs out. He might even end up at a decent club and wear the red and blue.
  4. Looks like he didn't get better after all. Condolences to his hairdresser and family.
  5. They're still at it. Today's session is scheduled to start at 9.45am at Goschs' Paddock. After that, a session on Wednesday and it's goodbye to 20111.
  6. But the ABC in Darwin already covers the match of the day which means no extra cost. The problem is that the genius in charge of programming is anti-sport.
  7. I apologise about the annoying subtitles but I think it's important to share the humour around in a multicultural Australia that also has an abundant supply of fruit.
  8. Self-defense against Fresh Fruit is not just humour - it's also strongly tinged with political comment. Nevertheless, is it possible to find the script or better still, the sketch on You Tube?
  9. Good question and one would hope they do since I believe they are running some forms of match practice during training sessions and, as we've seen, we've already incurred one major injury. The delay in naming the club's medical people is a concern because of the background and the long periods of valued service provided by the previous doctors who apparently left hastily and in unhappy circumstances.
  10. I think my Truth highlight came about five or six years after I finished school and they ran a story about a former teacher and his involvement in some exotic love tryst that had him in a situation the article described as a "ménage a trois". Unfortunately, the subject he taught wasn't French, which was a subject I detested and had happily given up after Form 2 (Year 8 for those under 50) so I never quite understood what it was all about.
  11. A few years back we could get the ABC NTFL match of the day on a week's delay on ABC2 (which I got through Foxtel). In the year that the Tiwi Bombers were introduced into the competition there was an emphasis on their games which was great. The team played an exciting brand of footy and had an eclectic mix of colourful characters like Efrem Tipungwuti, Rupert Pupangamirri, Roy Farmer and our very own Austin Wonaeamirri. Then some genius in programming at the ABC made a decision to axe all sport from the ABC2 Channell. I understand there were protests but they fell on deaf ears and I wouldn't be surprised if the station's ratings fell to record lows. Judging by the latest programming that I saw, I wouldn't be surprised if their audience comprised of more dead people than living. Still, it's their 8c. NITV occasionally shows a footy carnival from Alice Springs on Sunday afternoons but the games are from last Easter.
  12. There is a separate thread for that form of the game but I wasn't impressed by last night's game. However, I think they're really for different audiences in many cases. There seems to be a belief that participation in 20:20 has affected the cricket development of many players and weakened the test side. That's the theory but I don't know if that's the reason for Australia's demise in test cricket.
  13. Now that's quite enough people. Redleg, that horse racing stuff encourages people to gamble. We can't have that here except during the Autumn Carnival. And no more political discussion here or any discussion about whether or not what someone says is political. I'll do the moderator's thing and ban it. Now, where were we. Yes. Truth. They had a writer called Brian Hansen who was always very forthright and got some good stories. I suppose he would have retired by now but he seemed to get the inside stories all the time. Anyone know what happened to him?
  14. Mind you ... the Truth was always a good read for a giggle. The good thing was they used to keep the footy stories going throughout the summer when the other papers usually ignored it. I suppose with the Internet and saturation coverage everywhere the Truth lost its appeal.
  15. OK. That'll do Lucy. I hereby declare all politicians of all parties, now officially members of the Scully ... er, that family and they can no longer be mentioned on this thread (except if they've received the treatment from Norm Gunston on You Tube).
  16. Pre season training at Casey on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=320986624587832 I can't log in (not on FB) and my wife doesn't have Flash Player so I'd appreciate any translation of what's on there.
  17. The same as it is every week during the wet season. Hot and steamy with thunderstorms on the way. Years ago Darwin was almost destroyed by a cyclone on Xmas Day. Not my cup of tea.
  18. OK - its Tiwis by 21 points with about 15 minutes left. Austin is playing but apparently little impact.
  19. Thanks for bringing it up Elwood 3184. Today happens to be the day of the NTFL's Wonaeamirri-Gregory Cup match between the Tiwi Bombers and St. Marys which was introduced last year as a tribute to the late Matthew Wonaeamirri and a means of recognising the career of Leon "Foxy" Gregory, the first Tiwi islander to win the Nichols Medal. The Wonaeamirri Medal goes to the player judged best on ground for the Tiwis and the Gregory Medal to the best St Marys player. The game is actually under way and I'll see if I can contact my sources to find out if Austin is playing for the Tiwi team.
  20. Don't worry DC - everything including politix - is taken with tongue in cheek on this thread. Everything except the thing we're really not permitted to mention here.
  21. Gawn to miss season. At least it means we will have two terrific recruits in Max Gawn and Jack Viney ready to step into the big stage from round 1 in 2013.
  22. Those are the real issues on this thread. Politics, corruption, greedy people with dysfunctional lives, sociopaths, overweight ugly parents and bananas. Don't want to start any fights but weren't some of them liberal pollies like Malcolm Fraser born with silver spoons in their mouths ensuring they never needed to go out and earn an honest dollar or two? What did you think of Sir Billy Snedden?
  23. Bloody hell! Does this mean I have to tell the grandkids that there's no Santayana?
  24. It's hard luck but will be character building. Max - your sponsors are 100% behind you and wish you well on your recovery and rehab!
