I’ve attended many VAFA B and C section games in recent seasons (none in 2020). A number of clubs in those competitions rely on canteen sales, raffles and post game bar sales. If these facilities are limited/reduced next year because of ongoing restrictions/precautions relating to Covid19, many of those clubs will struggle. More so, clubs in lower divisions. Junior clubs are also doing it hard. The game depends on players coming up through community grass roots footy. There are tough times ahead.

Must be confusing for Treloar. On Mondays and Wednesdays he trains at Lexus Stadium (or whatever they’re calling it this week) and on Tuesdays and Thursdays he has to go to Whitten Oval.

I didn’t notice until I saw this article that James Jordan has been put on the rookie list. This appears to have implications as to the club’s list size and the number of players it can select at the draft. Good question. I think that Cat B’s can be nominated to remain as a rookie for a third season and contracted at that time. Aaron Neitzke is also not contracted but can be drafted in the rookie draft and then contracted.

The Cleary article indicates that Toby Bedford is our only uncontracted player and that a few others who the club has yet to confirm, have in fact signed new contracts.

This article on who gets an AFL lifeline states that “Melbourne has re-signed a number of players it is yet to make public including Mitch Brown, Jay Lockhart, Kade Chandler and James Jordon,” and suggests that Toby Bedford is our only player currently in limbo.

The rules for the second tier competition are absurd. Apart from anything else, they should be the same as the AFL for the benefit of players who go up and down between the competitions.

Technically, someone else could draft him but why would they in these circumstances? Melbourne has looked after him for two years as he’s been recovering from two ACL’s and he hasn’t played since 2018. Why take a risk with a player who is earmarked as a rookie and will spend a reasonable part of the season just recovering? It wouldn’t be a good look for the club that took him.
