Allen Jakovich’s 30th Anniversary
Deelectable replied to Heart Beats True's topic in Melbourne Demons
We didn't have to go to Perth. The rule dictating the higher placed team got home ground advantage was not in place back then. I remember it vividly. The AFL hadn't made up its mind until late on the Monday preceding the game. Of course we we're screwed. Having said that, I'm not sure the squad of '94 was quite ready. A lot of young superstars emerging. Can't agree that it was wasted. It's the subsequent years that fate totally conspired against us. It was a footballing tragedy. -

'94 may not have been wasted but the subsequent years certainly were. Not sure wasted is the correct term. If not for a plethora of long term injuries to a multitude of stars I feel confident this group could have won a couple of flags. Yep, 2021 was great but personally I would much preferred to have witnessed 3 premierships in my life as opposed to one. -

The final series in '94 was ok. We made the preliminary and the AFL in its discretionary basis sent us to play the Eagles in Perth. The decision was made the Monday before. Unbelievable. The real tragedy though was the events prior and leading into the 1995 season. This was a team with a blend of youth and experience that could have formed a dynasty but career destroying injuries ruined all of that. Schwarz did his knee, Tingay (a superstar) fell through a pane of glass and severed his hamstring. Lyon's back was a mess. Paul Prymke similar. Glenn Lovett, having finished 7th in the Brownlow, had his career destroyed by multiple hamstring injuries. Sean Charles hand was badly hurt and he was never the same. Jakovich injured during the season. Martin Pike left the club. No doubt I'm missing some. The era was ruined. It still irks me to this day. -

Most talented Demon ever! Talent was largely untapped. For the effort given he was simply sensational. With any dedication and fitness he could have been one of the greatest AFL players. I was fortunate enough to witness most of his games. -
My understanding is that Tomlinson is on around $450-$500k? Also Joel Smith will be gone. Perhaps $350-$400k. Josh Schache $250-$300k.

Petty was way more effective than you're giving him credit for. He provided a decent physical presence. Fullarton was absolutely monstered in virtually every ruck contest. Bryan brushed him off like a twig. Even the Bombers back up ruck completely outbodied him.Hate to think what might have happened against Draper & co. 20 disposals. Well done. Doesn't really help our cause. Forward craft is negligible. A ruckman he ain't.

Howes has been excellent at Casey and is a classy mover. Comes in if Woewodin misses. Laurie deserves a run of games but not sure Optus suits him.
-
Definitely an inferior surface to the MCG. Potential to be somewhat heavy and slippery of there is a lot of rain.
-
With Woewodin seemingly injured should come in next week and given a 'Sparrow type' run of games. Confidence needs building at AFL level.
-
And you the opposite. And you are also personal. Signing off for this Sunday . Enjoy your evening.
-
You're very slow. Some suggest he was recruited as a forward/ ruck. It was the opposite. Desperate for another ruck, not forward. If we believe your hypothesis for a second the club lost its mind. Who do you suggest was going to fill in for missing Max? Actually, forget it. Bores now. Why would you debate such an illogical person as myself anyway?
-
Agree to disagree but his not good at either. Trent Ormond Allen was a more physical ruckman. Fullarton is a ruck rover at best. We desperately need to go into the market in the off season.
-
Didn't say he was a primary ruck but definitely as back up for Gawn. Evidence is in the wording 'Ruck Forward'. Primarily, as opposed to primary, a ruck is his intended role. He has been beaten by most VFL rucks this season.
-
So who do you think the club had in mind us a back up ruck? 100% that's why Fullarton was recruited.
-
Again, this is not why he was recruited. Gawn out and not selected. Essendon reserves not the strongest opposition. Schache has had numerous days out at Casey but useless at AFL level. These stats for Fullarton are meaningless.
-
Totally agree. His ruck craft is barely VFL standard. 52 hit outs to Bryan. Not all against Fullarton but wow! And this guy can't get a game. Zero physical impact.
-
Commentators smoking something. "Fullarton all over Bryan today". What?! Fullarton picking up cheap possessions around the ground. Bryan has massacred him in just about every ruck contest no more exemplified by the grab out of the ruck and a just missed snap at goal by Bryan. Mystifying.
-
Disagree. He was basically the Grundy replacement. Ruck who could play some time forward. He is not particularly good at either.
-
And who does he replace? He Waa not recruited for that role anyway. We're desperate for a genuine back up ruck.
-
Best game I've seen Sestan play.
-
Perhaps if we're out of the running in a few weeks I'd like to see Laurie get a run of games. Very consistent at this level and knows where the goals are. Replace Sparrow.
-
Yes but Fullarton was recruited primarily as a back up ruck to Gawn. He is a mile off it. As a ruck rover type he has been good so far today but that is a bit of an outlier. JVR and Petty are stronger in the ruck than him.
-
Fullarton getting enough disposals and a goal but is a twig alongside Bryan and is being mauled. Given that ruckwork is his primary role a two year contract is a worry. I guess he'll just be a Josh Schache replacement for 12 months.🙄
-
Dee's have gone ahead of the Pies on the ladder without kicking a ball!!😃

At least one game Crisp was sub. Shouldn't count.
