Death Riding Fremantle 2023 - Feathered Cap Edition
Freo are beating Sydney this week (IMO) on the way to an 11-12 season, and can blame their poor start on missing the finals. They're too good a side to be hanging around the bottom 5 and if Jackson plays more games like last week then their forward line will start to be a bit more potent and consistent.

2023 Injury List
2 weeks at Casey and back in for the Carlton game would be the most sensible option. McVee will need a rest by then.

It's getting to the point where I'll be genuinely shocked if they don't make the grand final.

Off memory we avoided Kardinia Park in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2007, 2014, 2017 and 2020 (only because of the COVID amended fixture). The only way we can avoid Geelong down there is if we play them once and we're the home team.

Score review gone too far ?
Went to the Pies V Swans game and there must have been at least 6 reviews. Some of them were so obvious you could tell from sitting on level 4 of the southern stand. It's as if the goal umpires aren't even trying anymore to make a decision when there's a close call, which completely defeats the purpose of selecting the best goal umpires in the country.

Tassie game vs North Melbourne
There's speculation the remaining time slots to round 23 will be announced next week. Given North are a bottom team I'd expect this game to be on Saturday afternoon or early Sunday 1:10pm.

TRAINING: Monday 8th May, 2023
If last year was any indication, it's a hard no from me. Should play 2 to 3 Casey games and then come into the seniors.

PREGAME: Rd 09 vs Hawthorn
In - BBB, Hibberd Out - JVR, Turner Thought Turner settled well after a shaky start and was a bit stiff to be subbed. However I assume he was warming the seat for Hibberd. Spargo would have to be extremely close but you couldn't drop Chandler off one quiet game. Maybe JJ goes out for Spargo, with the former being on the edge of selection all year. Glad we have Hawthorn this week rather than Port (which will be a early-mid season litmus test/audit for us). The weekend was a taxing game and 4 interstate trips in 8 weeks is a lot for a VIC side. Compare that to St Kilda who have travelled just once, and that one game was at a neutral venue against Collingwood.

How many wins will see us play finals?
I reckon 13 with a poor percentage.

POSTGAME: Rd 08 vs Gold Coast
Our win over Richmond was far poorer than today given Richmond were seriously depleted. My two points. 1) Unlike North last week GC’s pressure wouldn’t allow us to play the game on our terms. We did pretty well to establish a reasonable lead on many occasions, we just couldn’t break them. 2) Collingwood have played like [censored] for 2 quarters in each of their last 2 wins over middle of the road sides like GC - would you say they were poor wins as well? With that being said, it certainly wasn’t a good performance and I’d be concerned if Goodwin wasn’t concerned with elements of the game and the team structure.

POSTGAME: Rd 08 vs Gold Coast
Interesting that when Collingwood fall over the line against middle of the road signs like Essendon and Adelaide- the media, the players and supporters celebrate like they’ve won a flag and give the impression that they’re this special side that captures the hearts of the media and most football supporters. But, when we win a close game against a middle of the road side interstate in challenging conditions, it’s considered a poor win by some despite leading for 99% of the game, something that Collingwood are incapable of doing in many of their games. This win wasn’t as poor as some are making it out to be. We got lucky with some umpire calls as well as McPherson missing that very late goal, but we beat an inform side who are playing hard footy at the moment and asked a lot of question of us today.

5 points up against a WAFL team 8 minutes to go in 3rd qtr. Didn’t realise how bad Richmond actually are and I didn’t rate our win on Anzac eve as much as others.

It’s hard not to get seduced by the way Brisbane play their footy when their up and about and they have a very talented midfield and forward line. But, can anyone see them knocking off a Geelong or Collingwood at the MCG in a qual, prelim or GF?

Harry Sharp for Brisbane kicks his first goal in league footy. 2 blokes come up to him for half hearted congratulations. JVR kicks his his first goal and 58 of his teammates come from all directions to celebrate and embrace the moment.

The 2023 AFL Fixture
You'd imagine the Dees V Brisbane game will be Friday night unless we play the Sunday the week before. That game clearly looks the most enticing of round 18. The Carlton V Dees game in round 22 will be overshadowed by the Pies V Cats game, the latter taking the Friday night slot you would imagine. The Adelaide, Richmond and Hawthorn MCG games could well be afternoon games which would please a number of fans.

NARRM Set to Return in 2023
Fremantle are also changing their name to Walyalup and I believe we’re playing them during that period. Be interesting to see who else jumps on board next year.
