Have we officially found our full forward?
What makes a natural key forward is the ability to take marks. He had that even in 2019. Petty should never play back again imo. He's 1 quarter away from pulling down 3 marks and turning a game. Neitz. G train etc. There is precedent here.

The Run Home
This is an odd conclusion, pardon the pun. The odds, given our draw suggest we win 3 to 3.25 games of 4. To think we win only 2, the burden of evidence is actually against you. It's a nice narrative to think that Cerra being injured or Franklin being out actually moves odds. Its a nice fan story but for player like these, it simply doesn't move the needle that much. (Same for Oliver actually). If anything not having Franklin out there as a witches hat improves the Swans odds. There are things to work on but we are well placed, it's all going to come down to how we convert our midfield and territory dominance. We almost never get beaten behind the ball. Having said that, if we dont make a preliminary from here our game plan will need a shake up no question.

PREGAME: Rd 21 vs North Melbourne
For all the talk of "resting", AFL players rarely get rested unless they have niggles or specific set of circumstances (lynch rarely flew to perth iirc, Geelong's geriatrics). Maybe I'm naive or not paying enough attention but they almost never get rested because they are young or for cotton wool purposes. They typically get 'rested' thorough managed game time. Goody also mentioned Gawn is fresher this year in his presser. Be shocked if the captain didn't play.

Some love and appreciation for Max Gawn
All going well he plays his 200th against the Hawks in Round 22. All going really well he plays until he's 36 and retires with 300 games and 4 premierships. A guy can dream.

Welcome to Demonland: Judd McVee
It was. He had the briefest of looks and you can see he calculates it's risky and he needs to put a bit of extra mustard on it to give Hunter the advantage. You can't teach that. Quite often we have players in space/in front and the kick doesn't hit them on the full. He always does. Also, the kid is pretty much last for clangers per disposals in the entire competition, regardless of position. Been on his bandwagon since Round 1 to play him thru the middle a bit, but honestly he's going so well just leave him at this point. But imagine 2 more preseasons and weights programs. Crazy to think that he is still a teenager.

Harley Reid
Dursma is this guy . Reid's highlight packages essentially consist of fend offs. He's not racking up huge numbers like Ashcroft or Daicos did (tho I believe he's been asked to play up forward/different spots). He's a burst player from stoppages. I reckon he'll be the type of player that will win you a GF but won't necessarily get you there. So in some ways he's more suited to our list than a west coast or north I guess.

Farewell Brodie Grundy
You can line up all the successful Kpf of the past 20 years and the ones that didn't quite make it and marks per game will pretty much separate the two. Around 4 is the line, 1 mark a quarter. (Yes, there are exceptions that prove the rule). Grundy needs to work out how he consistently gomna takes marks in the forward half. He doesn't have a leap and he's not quick. Tough gig.

My 3 word player analysis V Brisbane
To be honest I'm not even sure of the point I was trying to make. And regrettably opened a bit of a can of worms. He played a good game with flaws like you said. I like ANB, he brings 4 quarters of elite running and pressure every single week, regardless of score or conditions. Having said that, I definitely think he's trying to take on opponents this year and create a bit too much when he has the ball (when that doesn't appear to be his strength) but maybe that's the coaching directive.

POSTGAME: Rd 18 vs Brisbane
It could have been his grandmother who kicked the winning goal, he wasn't going near it. May was playing the anchor role, standing in his own half when Melksham took his kick. To celebrate would mean a 50 metre sprint, then a 100 metre sprint back with 30 seconds left on the clock. May is intense until the final siren is over (see GF spray of Trac). As another example, after Woey kicked his goal, everyone got around quickly. May and Petty were back of the centre circle. May looked at Petty and kinda shrugged to say should we go over? They eventually did, but yea it's just not in May's nature to be celebrating until the 4 points are banked.

Enright. Wanganeen. More recently Jadyn Short. I believe they all started as back pockets but used the ball so well they got shifted up the ground. It's not going to be this year I'll concede, but as the pre seasons go by this kid has to be given a run further up the field to see what his full upside is.

My 3 word player analysis V Brisbane
He had the equal 2nd most clangers and 3rd worst disposal efficiency. In other words, the less he has of it the better. And I'm not having a go, I'm just stating facts. His strengths is when the opposition has it. His missed handball to Brayshaw running past inside 50 with under 2 minutes left was a wtf moment.

Breaking: Stuart Dew gone
Yep. Both queensland clubs are ranked bottom for handballs year after year (or close to) bar the off exceptional year when they are mid table. It's a contest, clearance and kick game plan. You have to have skill between the arcs or key marking forwards. You're simply not going to have wave running. The list needs a tweak. Not an easy fix imo.

POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs St Kilda
I don't get the backlash against the backlash. If you are going to be pumping up our performance last week based on a lopsided expected score and saying we are playing ok footy (my own hand up), we lost the expected score this week with 2 extra players and 5 of their best 15 out. Our kicking for goal and steven may won us that game. We were beaten in many areas and first time in a month, felt we really missed Oliver around the stoppages. All relatively moot. I suspect with where the ladder is now it's 3rd or 4th for us regardless what happens from here.

POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs St Kilda
Yes I realise that. I also realise that you are allowed to play different positions on the field for different amount of times and the entire game plan won't collapse. Have never suggested that he spend the entire game in the middle. But if you are going to be concerned about our woeful decision making and forward 50 entries, we need solutions other than " try harder" "send him back to Casey" "have a rocket under him". In any case, we generally win games and look dominant when Petracca kicks well, so it worked out and we got the 4 points.

POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs St Kilda
To answer your questions.. let's find out! You make my exact point for me. I don't mind your negative perspectives on the game, but you can't keep bleating about how shizen we play and then have the same magnets in the same spaces and expect different outcomes. If we don't try to change it up a bit we will be making up the numbers with this sort of forward half play. Goodwin will say we are working incredibly hard and blah blah blah. There is absolutely no imagination from our coaching box right now. Our game plan reeks of arrogance.

POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs St Kilda
Just close your eyes and imagine for a moment that for some of ANBs possessions, instead it's McVee having the ball instead. Reckon you can put another 2 to 4 goals on the scoreboard? He's made around 600 decisions this year and I reckon 598 have been the right ones. Weekly post, wasted playing a full game in the back line. See you next week.

2023 Injury List
I'm surprised the loss of Fritta hasn't got more concern around here. Clarry's absence has been covered remarkably by Trac and JV this last month. But both are elite at what they do so it's not hugely surprising. Little concerned who exactly is going to take marks inside our forward 50 and have those shots at goal. After Fritta (30), out next best is Pickett (22) then it drops off. This isn't simply about a ball movement/game plan issue. The next player in is nowhere near the calibre of AA that Fritta is. Imo really need Grundy or Gawn to snag a few this week. The back up Saints ruckman from hit outs is Mitch Owens. Yes, that Mitch Owens. If you are paying $1.4 mln for 2 guys against a first year midget they better win you a game like this or at least dominate on the scoreboard.

Garry Lyon analysis
Going throw something out there to address this lack of contested wins inside 50. Play Clarry forward for a time this week instead of Trac. Yes, the obvious one is Trac but our midfield has shown covering Clarry has simply not been a problem as we've dominated clearances and contested regardless. Also I don't see Trac hitting the side of a barn even if he gets the ball in space right now. It's something the opposition would not expect (Lyon will have a plan for Trac with all the noise those week?) and it might be a way of easing him post hamstring. And before the Co13 worshippers here lose their collective minds for the suggestion, remember Martin, Fyfe and Cripps have all played out of the goal square with good effect. Great players find a way to win the ball. Oliver is good in the air, and he will draw numbers on the ground. He's so good and competitive, he will clear traffic and set up some goals off his first posession. Guaranteed. It's time to be creative and change the mix slightly. Our current approach is too predictable

POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs GWS
How do you know it's not that simple. Give him 10 minutes. Change it up. What is stupid is doing the same thing with the same players and expecting different results. Clearly our ball use is a problem. His ball use is one of our best. I'm not asking to put Jake lever in there. What exactly would be the worst thing that would happen? Our whole game plan comes crashing down if he has 2 rotations on ball? Lol. When something isn't working try something different.. what exactly have the coaches tried that's different That's the point.
