PODCAST: Rd 11 vs Sydney
I may be biased from watching the Casey game as well, but we need to consider how poor the Swans were in assessing where we are at. They made so many unforced errors I thought they might be playing a different sport. I know you can only beat the team you play against, but I don't think its time to take the lid off. Very interested in the opinion of the most excitable of the hosts, George, on this. Thanks again

CASEY: Rd 09 vs Northern Bullants
I rode to this game with my youngest and we had a great time of it. Excellent match day experience, the seniors should take notice. You dont need someone running against an LED display, just a kick on the ground and some very reasonably priced chips from the canteen. Saying "gday" to some of the players and staff really made the youngsters day too. I reckon an auskick session or two wouldn't have been out of place. As for the game, as has been mentioned throughout this thread, the Bullants are nowhere near the level of the AFL-aligned sides. The AFL really needs to do something about the VFL to make it a league that improves the level of footy, as well as fan interaction. The Casey players were able to break tackles, out run and out mark their opposition consistently. The Bullants talls were all shorter and obviously not as strong as the Casey equivalents. As a consequence it is hard to judge performance, though I think intent still goes a long way. Campbell and Sestan were dominant in the first half. It seemed like Verrell was given more of a chance after half time and did well, though he was much bigger and stronger than his opposition. I saw Goody, Chocco and a few others have a quiet word to Sestan at half time, after which he quietened down. Could be up for selection? The poor backline barely saw it, you would think it'd be a great opportunity for them to have a go in the middle or up forward. For the forwards, I was impressed by JVRs intent, second efforts, voice and aggressiveness. He certainly seemed to want to prove himself. Jefferson also attacked the ball and contest better than I have seen, and could have finished with 7 or 8. His kicking style is actually really good, which makes him a stand out. Fullarton absolutely shirked a few contests. He could really dominate if he was more aggressive. If you're not going to do it against a bunch of part-timers, you probably never will. The small forwards came and went from the game, all contributed some nice things, but drifted in and out. Laurie probably should have kicked better to give himself any chance. The midfield was largely dominated by non-AFL players, though Brown did work his way into the game and did some nice things. Woey too to a lesser extent. Billings dominated and looked silky. That being said, pretty poor opposition. Who would I look to promote from this? Depends on how the 1s go today, but Sestan and JVR showed a lot. In all, a great afternoon out but very little to be taken from this game. The AFL really should look into this.

PREGAME: Rd 11 vs Sydney
Turner is in career best form and should be in the side for the flexibility he brings. Lever is one of the best intercept markers in the game and crucial to our backline structure, I don't see a reason where we have to pick one or the other.

You know how dimensions work, yeah?

PREGAME: Rd 11 vs Sydney
Even though they have beaten us at the 'G before, they simply wont be able to tap it from the centre to inside 50 for a 30m kick to goal so easily this week. The SCG really is ridiculous. If we keep the pressure up and get our overlap game going, we should be fine. "should" You know how maths works, yeah?

I reckon there is a direct correlation to him being the sub and having his best game

PREGAME: Rd 10 vs Brisbane
Apologies for the stupid question here, but who is on the selection committee? I have been confounded by selection this season. The continual picking of poor efforts (e.g. Fritta), as well as some very surprise and inconsistent selections (e.g. JVR in and out). Then there are the players that have gone backwards - Spargo, Oliver, Sparrow, May etc A lot of the second tier players and young players need the senior and established players to fire to take the heat off them and show them the standard needed. We can get away with a couple not firing against the lesser teams, but not against anyone above us. It really speaks to a lack of desire from a lot of the players, which is a coach killer - as is our lack of fitness.

Luke Jackson back to Victoria?
Freo would be bananas to not want Kozzie. But then, they are Freo, so....

Luke Jackson back to Victoria?
What about JVR and Koz for Jackson and picks?

Unfortunately I think you are right. There is probably opportunity for him to shine a little more if we had other forwards who could take pressure off, but unfortunately we have too many passengers, too often.

Agree, neither player had much of an impact. It does seem like a bit of a waste of Clarrys capability though. His numbers for the season up to last weekend have been pretty good. Given Viney should be fit, I would assume he would go straight back into the tagging role. I wouldn't mind Brown being given a go at it too. I dont think we can carry JVR and Fritta as non contributors, particularly against good teams. Really don't know how to solve the JVR problem. I don't think Fritta can change at this point. I reckon we need to start giving Adams a game to prepare for the next injury to May, or his retirement. This will also allow Disco (our best tall forward?!?) to spend more time up forward. Petty should come straight back in too.

Absolutely this. Wasn't Chocco supposed to fix all of that?

I was thinking this, but then I also thought he's probably the best to fit into Melkshams role

PODCAST: Harvey Langford Interview
How has the adjustment from U18s to the AFL been? How much prep was provided to help with the adjustment, not just for training, but match reviews, media (and social media), behavior etc? Is being an AFL player enjoyable, or a bit much?

No, just my preference for team wins over individual ones

All credit to him and love his guts, but I'd rather we play finals than have any AA reps

PREGAME: Rd 09 vs Hawthorn
Selection has been bizarre this year, goes to show how little we on the outside understand. Hawthorn looked bloody good on the weekend, will be a good test for where we are at right now.

POSTGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
The fwd line definitely looks like it is structured a lot better. Petty has definitely helped with that, playing in a similar role to what BBB was doing - closer to goal, contesting and even snagging a couple. I would have thought that Kozzie playing in the middle more would have hurt us an equal amount up forward, but it seems you can have you Koz and eat it too. Spargo has worked his way into form after a poor start (and 400? days off), while Sparrow has been excellent defensively and with pressure up fwd. Chandler is obviously benefiting from playing further up the ground. Can kick and pressure is never in doubt. While I'm chuffed for Disco kicking 3, I don't know if we can rely on him to do it every week. Getting JVR back to form is needed, as is getting more out of fritta.

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs West Coast
Fullarton (sp?) was serviceable in his first game, which may be his ceiling. Given we have JVR, AJ and Disco all waiting to come back in - and all of whom can probably exceed serviceability (tbc), I don't think we'd lose much by dropping him. On the other hand, maybe a run of games (similar to what JVR and Fritta were given) could help him? I have no idea how selection at this club works so wont pretend to try and understand. What I will do is drink 4 fingers of ouzo, spin myself around, then throw an arrow at a dart board.
