Where did it all go wrong for the Demons?
MyFavouriteMartian replied to Supreme_Demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
When our board is based deep inside the Mcc, and has Mcc approved directors, how are we supposed to expect a board, that can think outside of the original box, to be able to make big changes required, to set the club up independently, for our futures sake. Hell, the last time we had a major, sorry, the 2nd last time we had a major hurdle regarding the clubs existence as the Demons, was when our off field leaders were to recommend we merge the club. Are we so bereft of ideas and of courage, that we think that Merging is preferable... to being based outside the Mcg walls.? . -

To effect change for the better, my dear hemingway. To sit on ones hands, and let another era of directors go the same path, is to expect more of the same. To excite the supporter base, and to get them to finally put down the redNblue glasses, and to look at our pasts results, is to see what has truly taken place in our past, as the results show compared to other clubs, who operate from outside the walls of the Mcg. The other clubs have 'Boards', and they do not have board meetings inside the Mcg, and most have been highly successful in their past 40Yrs of AFL. I think they are closer to true AFL footy clubs, with their footy boards meetings, based well outside the Mcg. You know, the Blues, Bummers, Roos, Swans, Bris-Lions, Eagles, and the Hawks, have all done much better than us, during our time of Drought... So I think that basing the club and administration, outside the Mcg, will not hinder us, but rather, make us more football conscious, and better run, than we have been. Change starts with the people, when they want it. When they're ready to grasp it. At the moment, and our past moments of a half a century, the main thing that has occurred with us, is no change largely. And this has been driven by our Boards failings. -

Could it be that the great walls of the Mcg grew, to become a barrier. Fencing us off from peoples imaginations, and keeping people away. A bit like the Kings realm, and the peasants outside.? -

Its a strange notion, that directors should look further away from the Mcg for our PotOfGold, whilst they sit in side the Holy Grail, pontificating on the future of Mfc.? Any-wonder nothing has changed, because everyone is peering at the playing surface of the 'G', instead of pondering our well-being outside the perimeter. -

Barass wanted us separated from the Mcc for a reason. Obviously we weren't getting funded well enough and our indoor training situation was pathetic let alone social situation. Barass asked them for better rooms for gymnasium and other facilities, and we were roped of the centre-wicket area. We wanted to be indeependent and make our own way but we were shunted to the Junction oval, for penance. -
Yes. But this is the main part, of the point, and the home base. The majority of us supporters do not know the directors personally, who are up for election. So we have no idea of what their skills are, and how footy smart or dumb they are. I think this is a major dislocation in our becoming a winning club. It allows for boys clubs, mates clubs, and too much hob knobbing, and elbow rubbing wannabe's to join for their own ends. We need people interested in only Mfc, and not the Mcc, or to make acquaintance with top business people. That can happen as a consequence, but shouldn't be the prime focus of potential directors. So we must get our board & meetings, out of the 'G'.

Your right, obviously. Except, not just top people... but top footy smart people. The whole gist of all my arguments/rants/pleas/concepts is all about this thing. Our failed Boards were all top people of their own fields, but I fully believe we didn't have top footy brains running the show. Top business savvy on it's own, just won't cut the mustard. We have to have top business acumen with top footy smarts as well in the same people. Footy-smart Pres, CEO, all directors, and obviously from there on down thru the Footy Dept. We just haven't had the footy brains right at the top (board level) for anywhere near long enough, over the past Half Century. maybe we had smart cricket people instead.? Time to take the boardroom back into footy peoples hands outside the 'G'. Build the ruddy Home Base.

Culture isn't drugs, its a whole bundle of ideas, values beliefs, disciplines, creativeness, forming communal standards. Other clubs were drinking since the 50's maybe earlier. So, what is it that's different, from them to us. When they win, and we lose? They are aggressive.......... We are conservatives, and inhibited in decision making They are not afraid of public perceptions......We are always embarrassed at the slightest They are fulfilled living the life they want....... we are always guilty for not keeping our morals They are Positive ...................... We are Negative. I think this is what we lost when Smithy was unceremoniously sanctioned from our colours, and Barass took his Melbourne MoJo to Carlton, with him. What were we left with, from all that... MfcSS__ .

Fixated on trying to give the recipe, for someone to take and do something with it. To oversee that these things do not continue, or to regrow in the club. Why would i bother, just to try to hang shytttte on fellow demon people. I want someone to wake up and make the necessary changes, so that 50Yrs of the same old recipe can be turfed out, for the older recipe of Checker, Smith, Barassi/Jordan. - - - - - - - - - - Now, Brock. he's a different cat. IMO because of his family tree, they're family culture is an old fashioned Aussie one, of beer, smokes, and rough'n'tumble. I do not think Brock is into shiny status symbols and living in toorak. That's one reason I liked him. So his drug styles, most likely dope, and grog. Others around the club might've preferred to sniff or snort.? Culture isn't about drugs, its about attitudes, good behaviours, disciplines, beliefs, desires, and values, compounded over and over on themselves for generations. Drugs/alcohol are a symptom of negative inner thoughts, fears, and the behaviours of these.

Your being facetious, or totally missing the point. And your words are all so short-term thinking. My mind is always to the development of the players, kids and culture, for the long-term health of this club. Leadership... not playing ability, is my point. True leaders to lead the club and list, and hold it away from the sort of temptations, a losing mentality brings us to. I won't knock back that playing ability of your liking, but its off field leadership and locker-room leadership we desperately needed in the 90's... leadership away from the club when with the boys. To keep them straight and narrow.

Were a happy team at Mel----bourne We are the mighty effin Dees We love our club, and we play up hard We are the mighty effin Dees... We've been a modern version of the 70's - 80s Saints. Legends in the night clubs. Parte` boys. it's how we fly. And its why we lose. ... there is a MfcSS inside the club, and inside minds. And its how we attract other like minded types from other clubs. and how our kids learn... or not learn. We so need a jSelwood, a LHodge, sMitchell, these types.

I can say that Barassi battled with a really amateur attitude in the Mfc. This was so hard to get out of the club, because many of the better players were the instigators of it. They were infected with it as a defence against perennial losing. They harboured it. And they used it subconsciously, as an internal escapee from fear of losing. Think of the better players who were there before Barassi and when the club were perennial losers. And these players could not be swapped out to other clubs fora win win situation as they were highly regarded by the supporters. << This concept was not necessarily considered by the club, but was a truth either way. The best way to lift the club aside of this culture, was to trade players into the club, and continue to grow our juniors. Nothtey was the beneficiary of this program, following Barassi. Lets say that the anti-dote of losing to big teams like the hawks, was to party hard, and sow the oats, to lick the psychological wounds, from games like Prelims and Grand Final shellacking's, etc .

Oh, Please. dmma. You don't think big heads, partying and thinking they're better than they really are, is a sick culture. Drugs as well. They say 'tings go better with Coke'. When list leaders start to enjoy themselves a little too much, the output drops off. We had one of the best lists Mid 90's. with Lyon, Jakovich, etc leaders of that pack. Did you know there was a culture problem with the Footy Show in the 90's... I'd hate to think that spread to our boys.

Same.??? I don't agree. Why do you think we got Moloney as a trade for our pick to be used on bOttens. Why did the Cats suggest/offer him to us. He was expendable for them. And we didn't know better. Says plenty about our recruiting-team spotters. Because he wasn't the smartest tool in the footy worlds shed. They wanted him out, and it was a win win for them. They got Ottens from the Tiges for two picks, and the Tiges picked.? Geelong finally made top of ladder in 2007 - and remained high up the ladder for years. We picked Bater and Dunn that year 2004. Ice T was the choice over West as I understand it, and Meth. Hawthorn have been on enhancers since the 80's dieter. One former Hawk of the 80's I know, called it "Elephant Juice". Different juices back in the 80's. More aligned with steroids.

What; you think Brock was the only partying binging player at Melbourne during those times. What, about Febey's habit.? What about that guy Riggers.? What about others? What about watt.? What about 'oges.? I'm sorry, but the culture issues had been boiling along since the mid 90's. Possibly earlier than that. No one coach has been able to eradicate this, but one did try hard.

Jon Anderson's Best 22 Since 1970
MyFavouriteMartian replied to whatwhat say what's topic in Melbourne Demons
Why, because of stats.? Lyon is the better tall forward able to play all over the forward half and out to centreline kicking goals from 55. Neita is a better straight line type player, and is even better suited to CHB, where he can attack the ball in straight lines, and drive it forward. Neita is better body on body, that the backline needs, than Lyon, who is more lanky sinewy/wirey build, less of a bull. -

Yep, the two who can play CHB, are both Lyon and Neitz. Neitz the better CHB. Lyon the better tall Forward. -
Mark Neeld's Spray on Morton.
MyFavouriteMartian replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
exactly. But people will not let him go, in peace. Choosing instead to relive their pain, and their hate toward him, in text. For the fairest of clubs, its really unfair on someone who cannot defend themselves of the constant denigration. -
