3 different phantom drafts out today all have us taking Pickett. It’s not the way I hope we go but it’s starting to look very likely. I had hoped if we were going to take Pickett then we would split again and take him with a lower pick but when you look at the quality of players getting to picks 15/16 am not sure it would make sense for cats, port or suns to split with us. Also if it pans out the way the phantoms predict it will then lots of teams will do far better than us out of this draft. Of course we won’t know who the real winners are for a few years but I’m still hoping come Friday morning there’s a bit more to get excited about.

Green Weightman Pickett

I just wasn’t sure if they go use their next picks and then use their lower picks and bring a deficit into next year and keep their later first round in the example I gave. In other words would if we bid on Green and they decide not to match they would be rating Jackson better than Green and a pick in the late teens.
-
Thanks for that GLG.

I only think we should bid on Green if we think he’s best available, the idea of bidding on him to screw the Giants is foolish. But at same time I think this will be the biggest pick of the night and will have a knock on effect on several teams weather GWS match or not. Ripple effect may still be felt at 10 and might decide weather we trade that pick or not. Does anybody know if Giants would be allowed to split with another team and hold on to one pick even though they would have a point deficit ?Say we bid on Green, they split with say Port for 12&18 then use 12 on Green and 18 on another player. If we decide not to pick Green and pick Jackson things might play out a bit more predictable.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - KYSAIAH KROPINYERI PICKETT
Colm replied to olisik's topic in Melbourne Demons
Don’t believe we will pick him at 10. Seems massive overs. We prob have 4/5 options for a split where we could pick him and another player. 10 makes no sense. -
12 & 18 is more or less same draft points as 10,28 and future 4th round we picked up so I def wouldn’t rule it out.
-
So any of ye two trade whisperers think anything likely to happen before the day is out?

This I think

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - LUKE JACKSON
Colm replied to Lord Nev's topic in Melbourne Demons
We might bid on Green but I think if the Giants decide to match they will split the pick for 2 picks in the teens and match with one of those and later picks. We then have a new team picking at 4 making it very difficult to predict who they will take when we don’t even know who “they” are. -
Your all over it Lord New. Do you think Weightman is a chance to get to 14?

Cody Weightman (Drafted by Western Bulldogs)
Colm replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Any chance we would split with port if we are after Weightman? Good chance he’d still be there at 12. Was looking at our possible picks from other threads and I’m thinking Weightman makes sense. Looks like we are going for Jackson at 3 and although he may play forward next year he’s really one for the future. So might make sense to pick one or two that will have a impact next year. Which would put Kemp in doubt and perhaps swing things towards Weightman who we have been reported as been very keen on for a while. -
Yeah agree with more or less all of that. I’m now of the opinion we will take Jackson at 3 and weight and see who’s available at 8 before pulling trigger on possible split. It will also depend who we are doing split with I guess as well. If Young is gone but still 3/4 players we rate highly like Kemp, Weightman,Serong or Stephens then we might be tempted to do a deal with Freo as we know some of those players will still be there at 10.
-
Only way I think GWS trading up to 4 is that they are super confident they can split it into 2 top 20 picks if we bid on Green. Which makes sense/ Green was def going to be bid on before 6 and then they would of looked to split it anyways. It’s a gamble by them that we won’t bid on Green, but they can prob get 2 better picks in top 20 for 4 than they would have for 6.
-
Cal has been confident that we are keen on Weightman for a while now, wonder why he didn’t ask Taylor about him in his interview?! Off limits maybe?
-
I though I saw on another thread that the rule was clarified to be that the pick swap cannot be connected to another, to try and stop what Sydney did last year, but as the Langdon deal has nothing to do with any future deal that we would be free to do a deal with Freo for pick 22.
-
Why wouldn’t it be allowed? We would be getting more points out of the deal but Freo would probably still end up with 3 top 10 players .(assuming nobody bids on Henry before 7)
-
He was mentioned by Taylor but more so in the context of splitting picks with teams that have academy prospects.
-
Huh?! We would still have pick 3 and we would only be moving from 8 to 10. If we wait until draft night we would know what players are still most likely to still be there at 10 so we could still get the same 2 players we would without splitting but we get 22 for a small forward. FWIW if there’s a standout play at 8 that won’t be there at 10 then I think we should pick him at 8.
-
If we get pick 10 and 22 from Freo it’s 2240 draft points. If you factor in how next years draft is devalued by academy picks then I think it works out well for us. We more or less swap pick 10 in this years draft for our first round pick in next years draft which by all accounts will be weaker due to academy picks.
-
Yeah I’m saying this a few weeks now. Just listened to JT interview again and I’m even more convinced we will do this deal with Freo it just makes sense for all parties. Think we will bid on Green at 3 and then take either Young or Jackson. Take best mid available at 10 and best small forward available at 22.
-
After listening to podcast I’d be shocked if we didn’t trade one or more picks. He said that there’s 3 players we are looking at for pick 3. Also said if a club came to us for a pick swap and told us what player they want that might make it easier. If we split pick 3 with GWS and put a veto on 3 players they would still prob be happy. Still think we will prob hold on to 3 but if we get the deal we want it’s gone. I think pick 8 will def be traded. Really feels like we are trying to force Freos hand with seeming very keen on Jackson and also mentioned Henry, also mentioned doing trades with teams who have father son or academy players. Still think we will split 8 into 10 & 22

Poll: Who do you want with our first two picks?
Colm replied to furious d's topic in Melbourne Demons
If they pick Robertson at 7, then they have to hope that ourselves or Carlton ( who have both indicated they are interested in small forwards)don’t pick Henry or they will be forced to match bid or else miss out on him. Doing a deal with us is their best way to secure 2 top 10 picks and Henry. -
Can see your point of view but it would of been nice to play them one next year and at the G.

I think we are massive chance to split it with Freo for pick 10 and 22. Id assume we would leave it to the last minute to do deal(provided the player we want are still there)but feel it will work for both clubs. If they want Jackson or Robertson an earlier pick might suit them. Also they might be fearful that us or Carlton might bid on Henry before their bid. Even if neither of us bid on Henry it’s a cert that he will be picked before 22 and Freo will match using pick 22 anyways. We will get good player at 10 and be able to pick up another player with 22. Could get Stephens or weightman at 10 and maybe Bergman of Taylor at 22. Also by doing it on the night we can see if there’s a gun we want still available at 8 we just take him. Win win
