Why would anyone do this..

Yeah even Goodwin admitted they had to play JVR in the ruck more then they initially had planned which explains they knew fair early that Petty wasn't cutting it in the ruck. The other point was McKay was able to get off the leash purely because JVR wasn't able to spend the time up forward in being able to not only contain him, but also engage in the contest when it came down. As much as JVR turned the game for us in the ruck, it also leaves us vulnerable down forward at the same time. Kudos for Turner, Melky, Kozzie and Fritra for standing up.

I called it pre game that for once I was hoping it was pouring with rain. I knew straight away this would stifle their ball movement and ability to chip the footy around. It was very evident that when it rained it actually suited us, when it stopped, it suited essendons quick ball movement. They're also not a big contested team. So for us to be able to beat them around the ball was also very evident. Oliver, Viney and Rivers were our primes movers in this area of our game. We came into the game with a huge emphasis on defence and contest and boy did we nail that. Kudos to Simon.

By the way, Ben McKay is a bloody good defender for them! He just kept clunking them and I think that's where the JVR match up would have kept him at bay had he had the luxury to play majority of his time up forward. Good recruit for them. Jade Gresham on the other hand.... 🥴

I was all for the Petty ruck situation but he completely lost me after the first quarter. Even Goody said that initially the plan wasn't to have JVR rucking as much as he did tonight but unfortunately once he matched Draper in the ruck contests that took away his/our forward strength up forward. Thanks god for Turner, Melksham and Fritsch.

Which were mainly off the back off JVR workhorse performance and our mids working around him. Petty was absolutely horrendous tonight. Even Goody acknowledged that by throwing JVR into the ruck into the second quarter that turned the game for us. Our own senior coach is pretty much admitting that Petty was pretty much ordinary in the ruck.

My only negative is that they subbed the wrong player off. How Bowey kept playing when AMW was actually playing well is beyond. Bowey is a huge worry for me moving forward alongside Petty and Sparrow. Judd McVee out marking Lance Whitnall was the highlight for me on too of many others of course. Kid is a serious talent.
