Anyone know if he starts immediately or will he finish the year at the cats

Least this is a player who is somewhat proven, I’d put him like melksham, Hibberd or Langdon when we picked them up, issue since 2021 is we have only targeted players that aren’t even playing senior football (Grundy excluded)

We need what we can get, we are wanting in all parts of the ground for quality players

Hard to put players against other players from vastly different eras but he certainly stacks up against anyone you would care to put him against, the fact he is so respected by the entire football world says as much, never in my lifetime has someone from Melbourne had that level of respect in the broader football world, Barass is the only one that comes to mind but I never saw him play.

More a question about our whole season than this game specifically, we went 0 and 5 in games decided by a goal or under, if we went 5 and 0 we finish on 12 wins and a positive win loss record. Are we just unlucky or is this just a result of our general lack of skills under pressure when compared to other teams and something that will persist until this can be rectified.

That makes it 5 games lost by a goal or less and 0 won, not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, either we are only a few small changes from turning things round to some degree or we are a team that goes to water when the pressure is on.

I’d like to have seen Brown Kentfield, Laurie and Adam’s for a start get a run of 3-4 in a row and not come on as a sub for a start. This year and last season have both been write offs and we still keep playing the same old same olds, they could easily have rotated out the bottom few players to give them a run at different stages and yet never did.

Not quite, how many players from that 2021 premiership side ever got dropped, for 4 years since that game if they were fit they played while everyone else rotated in and out for the reminding spots, the only one that really got dropped was tmac, fritsch gets a week, lever a week, but Goodwin never changed the core of that side, Trac Oliver Viney and Gawn were still the midfield core, Rivers despite talk only got a run when those players were unavailable, Pickett only finally got his chance now and we have seen how well that has gone. We had to be one of the most stagnant sides in the afl over that time, if you went over the dogs list playing today I wonder how many were in that 2021 gf team or the lions and cats sides that lost to us in that finals series.

Cully another great game always gives 110%, makes you wonder how many other players have been stuck in the vfl that haven’t been able to get a game due to goodwins loyalty to the premiership team that could also have what it takes

Doubtful on Longmire, if you watched 360 this week you would have seen the club would need to pitch to him not that other way round, Longmire was quite happy to be not coaching. I think Bucks is just desperate to coach again to rehabilitate his image after how it all ended at pies and the success they had since. Dee’s suit those needs as they could potentially bounce quickly if everything went right which is dangerous as he would be coaching for himself and not the club

It’s kind of interesting hearing the players talk they all seemed totally oblivious and that this all came as a shock, where as speaking with anyone on the outside it was something everyone had seen coming even to those who supported Goodwin staying on till next year.

Get the feeling Longmire has no interest at least not so soon. Simmo would take the call and Buckley seems very keen. I’d be worried about Buckley unless he has changed his coaching philosophy as it was out of date when he got the sack and it’s absolutely prehistoric now. Simmo was always ready to try new things so I’d be at least interested in what his ideas would be if he were to take it on. I think ultimately we need someone who is ahead of the curve and not chasing the latest fad but who knows what the next thing will be.

Also why we might get something for him, why hold onto him if he can fast track a rebuild, if we are being honest he won’t he playing when we are next in the frame

With a small sample it’s hard to draw any conclusions like that. The reality is the vast majority of coaches whether appointed as a rookie or as an experienced coach won’t win a flag. (if some one wants to run the numbers I’d be interested) My gut says it shouldn’t be a consideration and any differences are more likely due to other factors, we should just appoint the best coach we can find.

Simpsons always did it differently at WC his way of coaching never chased the latest trends, the fact he won a flag proves he knows what was doing, if he came to Dee’s i certainly think he would bring something different to the table next year. The fault with Simpson was not seeing the cliff and thinking the group had one more go in them, because of that it’s really set them back. I heard Brad Green in the press conference say we are still a top 8 side so if that’s where the board is coming from we could be trouble as they already have preconceptions of what the expectation is next year and they won’t hire someone who isn’t aligned with that thinking. It will be super important that whoever comes in gets that right, it helps no one if the reality is we are outside the 8 for some period while we rebuild but the board is expecting someone to come in and get us back to the 21-23 level immediately

McRae shows you can do both, I’d even question if a former senior coach is ever the right choice it’s few and far between that they have success at there next club.

I’d rather the 2ic down at cats than a assistant from a club who is in no better position than us.

Long time coming, said it before but he has only achieved success relative to what expectations were twice in his tenure 2018 and 2021. Can’t include 2022 or 2023 since we failed to win a final, and all the other years we didn’t even make finals and even if finals isn’t the expectation some years it’s certainly more than what has been delivered

If Goodwin was honest with himself he would admit he isn’t able to get the best out of this group and step aside. Maybe it’s harsh but I feel like he has underachieved relative to where we would expect to be in every season but 2018 and 2021. That doesn’t mean we need to contend every year but it doesn’t excuse these sorts of years either

Today was a coach killer if I ever saw one, Goodwin seems to repeat the same message every loss this year but clearly it’s getting no traction with the players. If the club has any backbone left they will sack him first thing Monday
