30 possies in this would be close to 60 equivalent in the men's due to the shortened game time!
-
Turned this on at half time and wow the quality has improved so much since the first couple of games I saw. Daisy and Mifsud both looking great. Cranston is a tank. The foot skills and tackling has really improved across the board. ...except from the Carlton payer who did aRicho and hit the post from a set shot in the goal square.

The red shorts always look funny, because of the dark blue at the bottom of the jumper. I'm wondering whether they'll go similar for the shorts, red at the back, blue at the front, to keep the colour scheme consistent.

SEN 2017 AFL PREVIEW: MELBOURNE’S BEST 22
deanox replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
When I see best 22s I'm often much more interested in seeing the list of 5-10 names that missed out. It is hard to see who is where in a 22 which means it's easy to over look a someone you exist to be in there. -
Sue it wasn't a suggestion, it is actually how ruck contests are umpired now (ie currently)!
-
There were stats published a couple of weeks ago, maybe on afl.com.au? They were pretty damming. In redirect of repeat stoppages the third man up made ~1-2% difference but that statistic didn't reflect who won the stoppage indicating there was actually no advantage to either side to go up or stay down, it didn't statistically change the outcome. There is already a rule that says you cannot Sheppard in the ruck. If two designated rucks are competing body on body and a third man comes up, to me that means the original ruck had shepparded to provide access for his 3rd man team mate Sometimes this is paid. But not consistently. This just clears it up.
-
The field umpire calls play on immediately to signify the end of the ruck contest (brought on by the poor throw) OR blows the whistle to throw it in again. This already happens at all ruck contests!
-
I'm very disappointed with the rushed behind rule change. Rushing a behind is a legitimate tactic in our game. The rule was only brought in to prevent players wasting time by continuing to rush behinds. This should only ever be played when the player is wasting time or when the player has had options but has chosen to rush the behind with little pressure. I think thr benefit of the doubt should always go to the defender. Players should not be forced to play a % game between "will i risk conceding a goal by trying to clear this?" vs "am I under enough pressure for the umpire to allow me to rush this?"
-
The third man up rule is good even if simply because of the screw aound with paying/ not paying shepparding in the ruck. It is ridiculous that you can be physically battling with one ruckman while their team mate jumps over you and a free is not paid. The question about "what is a third man and when can someone else touch it?" is easily answered; the umpire already currently calls play-on after every ruck contest, after that it is fair game.

From a club perspective, I'm happy that this was announced on our website by us. We weren't responding to other media reports. From an Oliver perspective, I love him as a player but he also has the potential to be one of the least disciplined payers at our club. Hopefully we can use this major incident to help straighten him out a bit early. Finally, I'm not saying I excise this behavior at all - I don't and won't - but the language used in our statement indicates the club sees it on the minor end of drink driving violations. Remembering that as a 19 year old he must be .00, it could be that he has had a low end failure while not intoxicated (ie the next day or in the evening after 1 beer) as opposed to blowing .95 at 3am driving home from a club. Still a gross error of judgement and poor behavior by perhaps not as bad as possible. NB: I have no source or info just interpreting the club statement.

The decade finishing this year. 2007-2016. Although there is a brief intro that covers Super's personal history in the 80s.
-
Best thing to do is either: - Remove two teams, get rid of pre season, and play a 26 games per year, playing nearly all teams twice. -Add 2 more teams (Tas and NT) and reduce the H&A fixture to 19 weeks and play every team once. change the finals system into a top 12 with the top 4 getting a week off, and the next 8 playing knock out for a place in the real finals. or something similar.

Mine arrived today. 793 pages of misery. Culminating in round 23 against geelong. I can't wait.

I wonder if we went after any mature rucks in trade or DFA with no cigar? Given we did not play two rucks together at any point last year, perhaps our coaching staff don't see it as a big game plan risk?
-
I feel like we addressed 2) and 5) in the trade period (this year and last). With Watts, Weid, Jeff and Kent, plus mids who can drift forward (Petracca), I feel like 4 isn't our biggest weakness. 1 and 3 and our stand out issues. I like to think that Stretch, Petracca, Kent, Hunt, can play that finishing midfielder roles in the short term and will get better as the rest of the team does. But ruck is a liability for us.

Wait, the reason we've been [censored] for 50 years is the advent of political correctness? So if it was still the good old days, and the electoral act wasn't amended in 1962 to allow aboriginals to vote, or the migration act wasn't introduced in 1966 ending the White Australia policy, or if the pill didn't introduce a generation of women to the beginnings of sexual freedom, the MFC would still be winning premierships?????
-
So Mitch White still on the list but not contracted for next year. Any ideas?
-
I'd be putting our first rounder on the table for the cats. they'll need to pay overs for it though, but they are the ones that need it.
-
You know, I don't mind it. Usually we part play tons at the G then when that Etihad game sneaks in it is a forgone conclusion that we'll lose. This way, bang, we need to start the year hard at Etihad. Those games are our focus all preseason so we should be in the mindset. No idea if we'll won but it's as good a time to break the mindset as ever. And if we do we set ourselves up for finals with more games at the G in the back half on the season.
-
Pft the current top 8 system places way too much emphasis on the top 4 anyway. Ridiculous that the top 4 virtually get the same benefit while the bottom 4 miss out.
-
I didn't like it. But after the way the dogs went this year, anything that evens the top 8 is better imo.

If you aren't sure, read back over this thread. I know is a pain but none of us are going to convince you one way or the other. Fwiw he named his source.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JORDAN LEWIS
deanox replied to spirit of norm smith's topic in Melbourne Demons
Too much smoke and fire for Lewis to go back to Hawthorn now I think. If there are questions about official leadership groups, I would just hold off announcing until leadership group until the new year after camp etc. By then players will prove their worth. -
It is the most useful thread on demonland.

I like the title. Footy isn't made up of a forward line a backline and a midfield, it's made up of "we have the ball" "they have the ball" and "the ball is contested (stoppages)". It makes sense the coaches develop game plans in this fashion too. It is forward thinking coaching. I like it.
