COACHES VOTES: Rd 01 2023
I agree with this but the unsaid part is that without Oliver's game we lose. He isn't just an accumulator, he is dangerous and impactful with those stats. Which is why I think he is underrated: he might not change the game in a moment, but he changes it over 120 minutes.

Welcome to Demonland Josh Schache
Surely no one has Schache as an expected star. 1. He adds 200cm mature body depth to cover in case of injuries, and helps drive training standards because he is keen to impress the coaches. 2. With some strong form, he'll play 7-12 games and be a part of a deep, strong squad. 3. And there is a very very small chance that somehow it finally clicks and all his potential is realised. We expect 1. If we get him to 2 we will consider it a massive win.

2023 AFLW Trade Period
Honestly they need to go div 1 and 2. There is such a gulf in skill between the top group and the bottom group, and only having a short season means it is uneven. - Have two divisions. - Play two 9 week seasons each year (every team plays every team once plus a bye). - Top 5 in Div 1 play a finals series for the Div 1 premiership. - Bottom 4 in Div 1 play relegation finals. - Top 6 Div 2 play a finals series for Div 2 premiership. - Div 2 Minor Premier (on ladder) and the Div 2 Premier (or losing Grand Finalist) gain promotion. - 2 up, 2 down, between each season. - With 2 seasons a year there is lots of chance to regenerate and change division composition. - Div 1 teams are excluded from the first round of the draft (maybe including Div 1 teams who get relegated). So Div 2 teams effectively get two picks before Div 1 teams, equalising further. This means: - many more competitive games, less blow outs or missmatches - heaps of great finals and relegation battles, twice per year. - time first finals/relegation playoffs for AFLM bye weeks (3 rounds reduced games) and second for September or October if possible - There is now a year round program with enough games that we can justify full time employment for all players (18 week home and away matches plus 2 x three week finals series'. - faster player development due to balanced competition levels and increased participation means faster league talent pool development towards a single full season in the future.

2023 AFLW Trade Period
That sort of money can be life changing for people, but I'd hope that if we had any players in that position we were finding a way to look after them. The Tier 1 slots are pretty massive because they are just a bigger gap to T2. If they can find a T3/T4 player at a club who should be higher, that is $25-35k more. That could be the difference between working full time as well as playing footy or dedicating your professional life to football. For a quality cusp player with potential, it could help them become a star. I hope we are using the marketing budgets etc. to look after those players on low Tiers rather than propping up the big names. I recall that when Harris moved to Melbourne she got football Tier payments only (not marketing), and with Daisy gone, surely we have freed some up. I'd be particularly disappointed to lose either Zanker or West though.

2023 AFLW Trade Period
Thanks @Dees_In_October. That Sarah Black article has similar thoughts: with T1 slots locked up to contracted players the most likely recruits are T3 to T2. Assuming my guessed Tiers are somewhat correct, I don't think we are in big trouble. I can't see many of Mithen, Harris, Paxman, Pearce, West or Goldrick being on the look to move. Lampard, Bannan, Gay, Heath, Gillard, McNamara, could get a bump, but would require a club to throw a T2 at them, which is a big call. Unless we have someone really in the wrong Tier (ie Hanks or Hire at T4!).

2023 AFLW Trade Period
As an exercise, I tried to assign players to Tiers based on where I thought they would be at during last season. It's not easy to fit some great players into those Tiers and I'm sure I've got much of it wrong. But also, while we have plenty of players who are likely underpaid at the Dee's, it seems like most players would probably only jump one Tier at most. For example, would a rival club poach Gillard, McNamara, Mackin or Heath with a Tier 2 contract (top 8 players)? All promising players, but top 8 on your list is a big call. Would a rival club make West or Bannan a Tier 1 offer? I also think the new CBA will mean increased pay again, so even staying at their current club will see a pay rise. I'm not saying players won't leave, but that I think it is less likely that it seems, given the restraints on pay Tier. If they wanted player movement, instead of allowing pre-signings, the AFLW should have increased the T1 and T2 spots for those clubs. T.Hanks T2/T1 K.Hore T2/T1 L.Birch T2/T1 O.Purcell T2/T1 E.Zanker T2/T1 L.Mithen T2/T3 K.Paxman T2/T3 T.Harris T2/T3 L.Pearce T2/T3 E.West T3/T2 S.Goldrick T3/T2 S.Lampard T3/T4 A.Bannan T3/T4 M.Gay T3/T4 G.Colvin T4/T3 S.Heath T4/T3 T.Gillard T4 E.McNamara T4 B.Mackin T4 M.Chaplin T4 C.Sherriff T4 M.Fitzsimon T4 C.Wilson T4 J.Ivey T4 M.Caris T4

Hanks would surely be Tier 2, Bannon Tier 3, and Gillard probably T4 due to youth but should be pushing to T3 at the Dee's after the year she's had. So yes, they are at risk, but they are probably only going to be offered a one tier increase. Would you move to a bottom club from the reigning premiers for $8k?

2023 AFLW Trade Period
The four teams who can sign players: do they have quality Tier 1 players already and if so, are the players they are likely to recruit from us going to usurp those players? There are only two Tier 1 and six Tier 2 players at each club. For money to talk, they need to be recruiting one of our lower Tier players to one of their top Tiers. If our Tiers are not in line with the true market value of players, then there is a genuine potential to lure. But overspending on a bottom player isn't going to help, and I think we'd be happy to keep our top 8 together and lose a mid range of that's what happens. I note the relocation bonus is worth up to $10k, which could be a bigger incentive, especially if they wanted to return home or were happy to move interstate.

2023 AFLW Trade Period
Looks like up to 13 players can be signed by those 4 clubs BUT 8 of those are to interstate clubs (Sydney 5, PA 3) while Vic clubs only have 5 spots (Hawthorn 3, Essendon 2). However, a relocation reimbursement can be paid to players moving. Given the restrictions on payment (must be paid in tiers) it seems like it would be pretty hard to get players to move clubs generally: it's only about $8k per year to go from Tier 4 to Tier 3, or T3 to T2. Not a lot to leave the club and culture and potential success behind to go to a bottom club. If a team can offer a T2 to T1 (~$16k) a T3 to T1 (~$24k) or a T4 to T2 (~$16k) increase it might be more tempting though. My guess is the highest risk players for us are any interstate players being lured home: they could get their relocation costs paid plus a $16-24k pay rise. Do we have many interstate players who are likely "under tiered" in our structure? I can't think of many from interstate, although there might be a couple of strong performers who could attract a T4-T2 increase for example.

Paxman to Fremantle
Yeah absolutely, she's be unfairly malligned in the media. My understanding was that the "numbers" thrown around for her at Carlton were actually what she was discussing for her multiple off-field roles. Rubbish reporting.
-
Paxman to Fremantle
It's so great to see the movement and growth in these numbers. It also shows us how hard it will be for us to keep out list together. Hanks, West, Zanker, Harris, Purcell, Hore, Bannan, Birch, Mithen, Gay, Lampard, Lauren Pearce. Work out which of those 2 get tier 1 and which 6 tier 2, and which 4 get bumped to tier 3. Add Goldrick and Mackin travelling from Ireland. A developing Eliza Macnamara and Gillard. And you still need to pay the veterans Daisy and Paxman. So 5 of the players I've named are in tier 4 at the Dees. Other clubs are sure to circle, it's a surprise we didn't lose any during expansion.

AFLW: PF vs North Melbourne
One thing that has impressed me about Gillard @FarNorthernD and @WalkingCivilWar has been her willingness to move up and back to make sure she is in position, whether that's tracking her poster, guarding spsce, covering a loose player etc. I felt she's held up the anchor in defence role quite well. Her marking hasnt quite been as good as expected for her height, but I think that will come with strength and experience, and she's better than expected beneath her knees for one of the tallest out there. A Really great prospect!

Brownlow betting probe
There is a simple solution to this: make sports betting on categories where one person has full control or could have specific inside knowledge illegal, and only allow betting on categories where integrity cannot be entirely compromised by a single persons action. So for Brownlow bet on player total, club totals and overall winners. No one person can know these outcomes unless envelopes are compromised, widespread collusion, etc. For individual match votes you could even have betting before that match has commenced but not after. Bad luck if it reduces overall categories.

AFLW: QF vs Adelaide
Reminds me of Hibberd at his best, but every week. The Irish connection and willingness to take the game on is what they have in common, and as players they are very different but I really want to highlight how much Mackin has improved throughout the year. I think is her understanding of the play and positioning has grown significantly and on the outside she does a superb job of knowing when to drop back and cover and when to take off to provide an attacking option running by. She must have covered a lot of ground on Friday night and was constantly running 80+ meters just to provide an option (even without being used) and also directional changes from defensive to offensive runs or vice versa to either cover or create the mismatch. I think if we can add Elize MacNamara on the other wing next season we'll have a truly unique set up in the AFLW with elite endurance and outside structure, combined with inside strength from Purcell, West and Hanks. It's very exciting!

AFLW: S7 Average Home Crowd
Quoted as 2555 in the report on AFLW app. Others have said we'd get bigger crowds at inner city venues. Maybe not?

Your club's best 22
My best 22 here will all current listed players so you can see who is in or out. I'm really not sure if they plan on starting both Gawn and Grundy on the field - they might but I would start one in the bench then bring on the other to create a mismatch. I also can't see us playing TMac, JVR and Brown with Gawn and Grundie in the team, so I've left Brown out to start. Harmes is stiff, but he just doesn't have a position unless he is replacing Sparrow or Jordan (very possible). Spargo gets the nod over him as the only forward on the bench (especially with extra tall forwards, the flexibility is needed). If there is a 5th on the bench I'm unsure if we'll go an extra tall (Brown) or a runner like Harmes. We've got decent cover in most positions, but like most sides, 4-5 injuries will really test the quality of that depth. B: Michael Hibberd, Steven May, Harrison Petty HB: Angus Brayshaw, Jake Lever, Christian Salem C: Lachie Hunter, Clayton Oliver, Ed Langdon HF: Tom Sparrow, Tom McDonald, Alex Neal-Bullen F: Bayley Fritsch, Jacob Van Rooyen, Kysaiah Pickett Foll: Max Gawn, Christian Petracca, Jack Viney I/C: Jake Bowey, James Jordan, Charlie Spargo, Brodie Grundy Emergency from: Ben Brown, Kade Chandler, James Harmes, Trent Rivers, Jake Melksham, Daniel Turner, Joel Smith, Development (potential games): Bailey Laurie, Blake Howes, Taj Wowoedin, draftees, Development Rookies: Kyah Farris-White, Andy Moniz Wakefield, Judd McVee, Deakyn Smith Likely Backup Only: Josh Schache, Luke Dunstan, Adam Tomlinson

2022 Player Reviews: #9 Charlie Spargo
I think Charlie suffered from our lack of tall forwards this year. With our forward line performing poorly, Charlie (and ANB) were up the ground much more often, and therefore delivering into the 50 not kicking as many goals. On paper he actually had a "better year" statistically. More disposals, pressure acts, meters gained. More "shots at goal plus inside 50s" in 2022 than 2021. 2022: 11.8 disposals, 2.8 i50, 1.1 shots at goal, 4.2 score involvements, 2.4 tackles (1.0 i50), 4.0 marks (0.4 i50), 11.5 PAs, 195 m gained 2021 11.5 disposals, 2.2 i50, 1.6 shots at goal, 4.4 score involvements, 2.4 tackles (1.0 i50), 3.4 marks (0.7 i50), 10.8 PAs, 187 m gained

Perception of usernames
Absolutely this, Jaded. It's a weird feeling knowing I've been posting and talking to some people here longer than most friends IRL, yet have only met a handful of people a handful of times.
-
Perception of usernames
Not my area, but I learnt through a friend of mine (not due to a death thankfully) that there is a sizable (and growing) "social media after death" industry, helping families reclaim passwords/ownership of accounts, post tributes/convert profiles into inactive accounts, advise online communities and friends of the situation. It definitely isn't something we really think about or plan for, but with many of us having increasing online presence, and communities, it is probably something we need to think about with respect to "having our affairs in order" and probably from a younger age than for other things.

Perception of usernames
@Nasherit's definitely Dean-ox. Nickname started in highschool and has continued ever since, there might have been a bit of a David Schwartz reference in there originally as well given my love for the Dees at the time. @WalkingCivilWarsometimes I forget that's still my avatar, as it's the only one I've ever had. I had probably just read Clockwork Orange for the first time when I created my Demonland account all those years ago!

AFLW: McNamara to miss 2022 season
Her aerobic capacity is a cut above most, and it adds a real weapon on one wing.

Farewell Sam Weideman
Also with Weid, I think a major factor in not making it is suitability to our game style. He likes a bit of space to roam in and lead into. We like stagnant tall forwards in a pack that we kick to, intentionality to halve a contest and create a contest or stoppage. I'm not saying he'll be Matthew Lloyd, but I do feel that when a bit of space is created around him, he is more likely to succeed. We've seen this when he has had purple patches on field. He doesn't suddenly become the Hulk in a pack, he is allowed to play his natural game, most likely because of how the opposition is playing.
-
Farewell Sam Weideman
If we are looking for future picks, it is so we have capital next year: if we aren't going to use the pick this year, it has no value if we can't on trade it.

AFLW: Rd 07 vs Western Bulldogs
I feel like she has been progressively getting better throughout the season. Maybe reading the party better, improving positioning, getting a bit of confidence. It wouldn't surprise me if she has a bit of a break out game later this season, just puts it all together and gets a lot of it.

Farewell Luke Jackson
To be honest, I'm not sure if Jackson could locate Freo on a map, he just wants to play footy and knows it's close to home.
