have you looked at the stats of the game? do me a favour, bring up his stats, and paste them here. then we can chat about his game. out of interest, also paste scott burns stats, he was lauded as best on ground by many i think. RE looks slow, he is. he is very slow. he is one paced - he runs hard all day imo but does not have an extra burst when he needs it, and im not sure he ever will. fwiw, malthouse gave brock 5 votes (best on ground) in the afl coaches association player of the year award.

i wouldnt worry too much if he flourished else where because he has played well here, but never been a stand out star. i still think he is a 3rd defender, prob competing with frawley at this stage, seeing garland and warnock seem capable of taking 1 and 2. unfortunately for chop he doesnt have age on his side, and we've seen his best. his best is ok, but long term i think there are hopes frawley could be better...

fair call, although i persoanlly believe that if he is in form he is capable of holding his spot. he has a lot to elarn, we'll see if he is able to bounce back from the twos.

find where i said that bell shouldnt get dropped this week. also find where i say he wouldnt get dropped for either cj or wheelan? my point is that cj plays a different role than bell and that people have been commenting only on the negative aspects of bells game and expecting him to play the same game gathering lots of possessions and rebounding forward. as someone said abov, it will be interesting to see in a few weeks if everyone is crying out for a mid ranged defender who is accountable, because in general, wheatley and cj arent, and bode is finding his feet.

i say wheelan is a better chance than any yes. was i basing this on height? no. CJ is taller than either i think but couldnt play that role. bruce is slightly taller again but doesnt have fast enough closing speed. wheelan is a defender. bell, to me, fits the same category. the skill that he seems to perform consistantly is stopping his direct opponent kicking goals. he does this by tackling well, and by matching players in the air, especially on leads. could you imagine playing CJ or bode on medhurst? imo both would get killed. bode is too small to match him in the air. CJ runs around aimlessly alot. CJ plays a great role rebounding, picking up possessions and driving forward, similar to wheatly. bell struggles with that aspect. i believe bell should get dropped this week, but i am saying there is no obvious replacement for him. bell in good form would be a reasonable match up, imo on brown this week, and so would wheelan. could you imagine CJ playing on brown? i cant, im happy to be proved wrong tho, because that would indicate that CJ has come a long way in the last 5 weeks. what good are draft camp results? for wheelan that would be nearly 10 years ago, for bell at least 5. but bell is one of the clubs fastest over 100m, in a straight line. im not sure how good his agility is.

not sure if he is an enemy of the dees but he obviously thought going north was best for his beloved. now that they've said no he is doing his best to look after them...

i'd like to see davey frawley and cj in. although frawley and carol will be a toss up. however frawley would have played last week if not injured while carol was consigned to the twos. i spose wheelan could get a run for bell, but i think wheelan and cj are fighting for the same spot this week. when you consider we already have bode and bartram running round our backline, and mcdonald has played a few roles down there this year too, im not sure there is a spot for wheelan yet.

no i dont agree. your arguement is flawed. 'bell is easily replacable, but they might not replace him directly' ? what type of statement is that? my point was that bells role is not the sweeper. its not the loose possessions. yes he should provide run, but he is primarily there to stop his man, and he does that well. i dont back bode or cj to stop the players bell can stop. frawley isnt as fast as bell and doesnt look to have the closing speed to play on the small uick leading players. wheatly plays his best ooty when unaccountable for the opposition, getting the ball and kicking long. and carroll, garland, rivers and warnock are fighting for the 3 tall positions. wheelan isnt on the park, but he competes more lcosely with bell than any of the others you have mentioned. bell will prob get dropped and have a rest. but there isnt a like for like replacement on this list. he has attributes that put him above the others if he finds form in his attacking game.

does anything make this board any more qualified than the existing board? not having a dig just interested.. also i put my money on the 8th member being garry lyon, or someone very big like a don argus. the other member will be the big card.

well a genuine ball magnet but seems to indicate no pace. interesting considering he did 20 in under 3. is there a list of draft camp results somewhere to compare?

i wasnt having a dig rogue, just a discussion. i thought your summary was pretty good, i was giving my opinion on the need for pace. and i was suggesting that we could use an extra elite mid with a lot of pace, but one would almost do. and that i think our biggest problem isnt that we need a mid with pace, its that the existing mids are a touch slow. and my point re the forward was that in drafting and trading i would prefer us to look for a key forward prospect ofver a fleet footed midfielder, simply because i see that hole as being much bigger.

paul johnson wasnt. and people bagged him for it. go figure. the collingwood players werent. they continually spotted up players closer to goal and on better angles, even after taking marks inside 50. st kilda did the same thing last week. guess which two teams we lost to?

a few of us had high hopes for him also. were you demon supporters before he got drafted? are you all converted now? and i thought this might be a good oppertunity to ask someone who would experience first hand website like this. does what is said on here effect the players? would col even know there are thread on him atm? would he care? its a bit daunting that 8 weeks ago people were calling for him to be delisted but now he is being heralded as a long term key back. and one question for the footy fans on here (those who arent here just for the politics): can you give us updated height and weight for colin? lol because he plays taller than he looks and still looks skinny as all hell. hope you enjoy your time around here.

mclean is slow. he runs at one pace all day and doesnt stop. but he doesnt have pace.

that happened a couple of times and we struggled. it is bad when the opposition has a lot of space to run onto, ie when rebounding. it means that the slower midfielders need to make sure they use the ball. it also means defenders who have pushed up in the attack need to be ready to push back even harder. it is not as big a problem in general play because you have numbers both in front and behind the ball, which means eventually the opposition ball carrier runs into you and you can pressure them, provided you can tackle when they get there. it also requires everyone to man up to stop the quick ball movement. yes you need pace, but if you think everyone needs to be quicker than the opposition then you need a different midfield completey. we need to rely on manning up and working hard backwards to block space. i agree we do need some pace, but what i am saying is i dont think it the most important attribute we need to work on. i think a successful marking forward is much more important. you have 3 mids in the centre. 2 wings, and 2 flankers. thats 7 players. plus 2 on the bench say. thats 9, whi are you standard midfielders. yes others will play there but they will cycle through the forward or back pocket, or are utilities. jones, mclean, junior, molony arent fast. but buckley, davey, cj, bell, and a couple of others are reasonably paced. what we dont have, is a fast inside midfielder. mclean and jones et al can win all the ball they want. but none of them can get the ball and burst out like judd or similar ilk can. i know thats asking a lot, but we dont have many players capable of playing both roles, and i think thats what makes us look slow.
