It might explain why Mahoney has said we'll use 2 & 3 in the draft, if we're trying to force Sydney to agree to maybe 2 & 23 rather than all 3 early picks.

Lamumba is far from certain the way Colonwood are dragging out this trade. If Varcoe decides to stay with Geelong where does that leave the whole Clark situation with only one full day left to go?

If Geelong throw in their 3rd rounder with the Clark deal, we can give that to GWS for Frost at least. Save us the risk of the Bulldogs pulling a shifty on us. Especially now they've lost Boyd and will be looking for other talls

2, 3 & 23 for one player would take balls of steel from Roos. I'm assuming if this is all true that the original plan was 3, 12 & 23, with 2 to keep on Brayshaw or pull another Tyson/Salem deal. Sydney likely said, "not enough", and due to the lateness of the hour Roos might have pulled the trigger on all our picks just to get the bloody deal done. Also have no leverage to ask for better draft picks back from Sydney, due to how late everything is. What doesn't make sense is why all this was left to the last minute though, when the picks aren't tied up with the Clark/Varcoe/Beams/Lamumba/Brisbane trade.

Not if he was signed by Sydney then traded. Wouldn't have been a free agency move but a trade. Port did this cleverly with a few trades over the last few years.

If Roos was really going so hard down this route, wouldn't he have tried to fit Malceski into the trade as well? We would've had a lot of leverage considering Sydney only got pick 39 as compensation... Just thinking out loud.

When's round 1? That should bring you back to earth. And the crux of your argument is it would take a "miracle" to trade pick 2 or 3 for a midfielder that serves these 3 criteria: 1. is better than the worst midfielders on our list 2. is better/more developed than the 18 year olds at the top of this year's draft 3. fits Roos' mould. Big tackler/gut runner/defensive game, etc. ...in a league filled with nearly 800 players.

It's expecting miracles to find players worth trading picks 2/3/23 for, to improve on current MFC "stars" like M. Jones, Terlich, Bail, McKenzie...? The worst 5 players at Hawthorn would be a good place to start.

Mate, if you're satisfied with our trade strategy so far, that's good for you. My opinion (which I believe are permitted on discussion forums) is that it's been lackluster, but I'm very happy to be proven wrong if we sign up some unexpected mids over the next few days. Is it that hard to understand some supporters are justifiably concerned that we're 40 hours from the end of the trade period (after a four win season and ten losses to cap off the year) and we haven't brought in a single midfielder, when Roos' entire modus operandi for this trade period was recruiting established midfielders for instant improvement? Lamumba and Frost deals can easily fall through the cracks, especially if someone goes to GWS with a better offer for Frost than, oh... offering them absolutely nothing and letting him slide to the PSD?

IF true, the deal was probably pick 2 or 3 + 12 + 23. Maybe they'll take Watts instead of 12.

When Frost and Lamumba are both signed and there's an article on our website, I'll eat my humble pie. Right now, Collingwood appear to be doing everything they can to sabotage the trade strategy of every other team.

MFC supporters at 1:55pm Thursday when no trades have happened:

MFCSS: The Varcoe/Lamumba/Clark trade will fall apart when Collingwood drag their heals, when they attempt to force our hand and get pick 23 off us for Lamumba. We'll then lose Clark for nothing.

Trenners won't play a game next year if our attempts to trade him, and the ensuing medical, caused him to re-injure the navicular bone. He now needs to go through another 4 or 5 month recovery, depending on the severity of the break, before even beginning to gradually train himself up again for match fitness (after already missing an entire season). Call it MFCSS if you want, but this has Clark written all over it (minus the obvious pissing on the club at his exit). Frawley and Clark are justifiably outs. We're zero chance of retaining Clark and Frawley is already signed with Hawthorn. Lamumba conversely could easily fall through the cracks and stay at Colonwood; he's contracted after all, and apparently North are talking with his management. Frost is being sounded out by the Bulldogs because we're considering taking him via the PSD. Could easily end up with eggs on our face there with that strategy.

Alright, here's a balanced look of the situation so far. Melbourne: OUT - Clark, Frawley, Trengove. IN - Garlett. And what have Brisbane lost? They've gotten Beams for draft picks and a fringe player. They've done an excellent job this trade period.

This situation with Colonwood makes me sick. I'm absolutely convinced they're doing this to sabotage everyone else's strategy. "Everyone's waiting to hear back from Collingwood", just on SEN. As long as they've got whoever they wanted to trade in, the rest of the trade period has zero impact on them, so they could care less if everyone else gets screwed over. NEVER, EVER deal with these f***wits again.

I think it's more the total lack of any movement from us. We haven't even secured Lamumba and Frost yet, and the whole thing is making me extremely nervous that whatever was looking promising behind the scenes has now fallen apart. And probably because I expected a lot more player trading from us given Roos' statements about turning over the list. Thus far we haven't traded one player. I'll be sick if we line up a team next year with even a vague semblance to the GWS loss team.

Exactly, this sudden "we'll just take those picks to the draft" reeks of "oops, everything fell apart." In which case you have to ask, what the hell were we thinking put all our eggs in one basket? You can't honestly tell me there weren't genuinely good fringe players at Sydney or Hawthorn looking for more opportunities, or players at Adelaide/Freo/West Coast/Brisbane/GWS desperate to come back to Victoria, that we could easily have swayed over with the lure of Roos/$$$? Have never wanted to be proven wrong so badly in my life, but...

I'd feel a lot better if we at least had Lamumba and Frost secured. Colonwood are [censored] everyone around, us most of all with the difficult Clark situation, which has seen North start moving in on Lamumba. And now Bulldogs are muscling in on Frost because they have a surplus of late picks to offer the Giants, while we have nothing left at the top end of the draft. Almost wonder if this is just sabotage from Colonwood to ruin our entire draft strategy.

Geez, and trade period is meant to be the time for optimism and hope. Not going to be pretty when we're 3-9 halfway through the season.

Highly doubt it if Boyd ends up going to Bulldogs. That changed everything and was completely out of the blue. If anything GWS will want Griffen & pick 6 in exchange for Boyd. Have no idea how those two clubs will sort that one out, but if we were targetting a GWS player I'd assume they'll tell us to rack off now. Yet another reason why this "strategy" of leaving everything until the last minute is fraught with danger and politics when 17 other clubs are all fighting to get ahead.

Didn't we put the cue in the rack with about 4 days to go last year? Leaving everything to the last possible second seems a rather bizarre trade strategy. What benefit does it achieve except allowing everything to fall through at the last minute and leave you with no time to trade players (gives no time for medicals/facilities tours/consultation with footy departments) or time to formulate a backup plan? I just fear the pick 12/Trengove fiasco has completely buggered up some apparent master plan, and left us with no leverage to do anything. It's also given other clubs ample time to muscle in on any territory we were gaining, potentially undermining any trades we had in the works. Case in point: Bulldogs now making a play for Frost.
