  1. If the AFL and the umpires had any sense they will police the tactic out. I would be careful replicating that trick.
  2. Brereton would have lost sleep at night over that dressing down. WOW.
  3. Collingwood had Jolly/Fraser, Brown, Cloke and Anthony as tall marking forwards last week and we covered them with Warnock, Bruce and Frawley.
  4. I think your earlier statement speaks volumes about your position on this. No sniping there. It was an out in the open king hit away from the ball He copped alot but gave back a little more. Kickett should have got a medal for hitting Read who was a serial pest,a very ordinary footballer and overrated tough man. And neither did they.... As you said they were king hits. Hardly sniping. In the age on all ground TV replays Lethal was one of those footballers that hit opponents front and centre. No cute hits, gouges or punches in a pack. I agree with the poster who put Libba up for consideration. The longer he played, the more miserable a sniper he became. Hard to think he won a B'low, Gardiner and Morrish medal.
  5. So were Dipper and Williams in their respective B'low years. Just the same as Lockett. Tip: None of them were found guilty of a misdemeanour in their B'low years. I cant see how you can single out Lockett but apply different standards to Williams and Dipper.
  6. Leign Matthews was hardly the sniper. Often he was front and centre with the "hard" stuff. One of the greatest players I have seen. Should have won a B'low one year where he dominated every other award by a country mile. If we are talking AFL time then Grinter and Matthews are out of contention.
  7. So were Williams and Dipper in their respective years of B'low glory.
  8. No it doesnt. Why do young blokes need a good 4 to 5 games to show something? Is that for the supporters benefit who only see them once a week? The coaching staff would be monitoring a player from the day he walks in the door, every training session, every club attendance session, every Casey session and game. Dont you think they develop a deep knoweldge about players that arms length members could only dream about?
  9. Why do supporters think young bloke have a mortgages on more game time if they dont deeserve it. If the Footy dept dont rate the performance in those games surely they shouldn't be carried.
  10. Well done. You were also calling for Frawley to be dropped at one point. Strauss had a number of unfortunate clanger in the last line of defence in week one. He also allowed Anthony too much freedom in the last quarter to mark 25 metres from goal. On the other hand he did not set the world on fire. He is a beautiful kick of a ball though. He's had a taste now he can go back to Casey and work on a few areas.
  11. Ahh, the voice of reality. 6 to 8 wins is the likely range. Happy to have more though.
  12. Good assessment. MM would be ropable. DB would have recognised that Beams and Pendlebury were the two midfield thorns for MFC.
  13. Best wishes to Kyle Mathews and his family for a speedy recovery. On another note, there is another gruesome lesson in this for all regarding fights. It will soon be forgetten and we'll all shake our heads when there is the next alcohol related report of violence. Nothing positive comes out of fights. Nobody wins and everyone loses (in some cases their life). A pity there is not the basic sense of agitators to walk away.
  14. How many mid paced small nuggety forwards will a small nuggety defender like Cheney who lack pace will be required to play on and at whose expense in defense will he come in for? McNamara will need to show something more than age to be continued in 2011. I am no PJ fan. He might survive by default. Will Jamar take another contract with MFC next year? Will Spencer continue to improve throughout the year for a permanent elevation? If Jamar stays and Spencer is elevated, PJ is gone. Maric needs to justify selection for 4 to 5 games. And I would only extend his contract if the Footy Dept believed he would seriously challenge for a best 22 spot over the next 1 to 2 years. The day we hold players merely for "depth" is they day we go backwards. If Wonna does not regain fitness this year, he might be cut. Could we rookie him? Mind you it is not necessarily a case of Maric or Wonna? If the right conditions exist both could go. Newton should count himself lucky he is still there. He has only got a game because Jurrah, Watts is injured, Miller, Martin out of form and Spencer a last minute withdrawal. Its amazing that supporters will put one player above the team interest and player form to say that player is somehow needing or deserving of 5 games to prove his worth when he has not done so elsewhere at the Club in nearly six years. Amazing. So we drop our VC and 2008 B & F winner who played a fair game to keep Newton. Great.
  15. Jordie's problem is that he flies under the radar the way he plays. The media will be focussed on the Sculgove twins. Its also easier to get the nomination if you are winning. Bartram was a cheap last minute rehire. He has a great tank and can effectively play a run with role on his day. However his decision making at times is flaky and is disposal is at times diabolical.
  16. It would undermine the integrity of how the game is played because the secondary aims of the bonus points conflict with the ultimate aim of the game...to play four quarters of football. Poor teams wont play any more attractive football because 1 they are not good enough and 2 there is no incentive re the re building of lists to improve ladder position. It will do nothing to rectify the imbalance of dominance and weakness in the AFL ladder. Bonus points systems have been used in various forms in other sports (eg Cricket) and has proven unsuccessful in creating better contests because it incentives outcomes that are not always consistent with the ultimate aim of the game. In the case of cricket it was undermining the whole competition. If you have a rewards system which is in any way different to the 4 points for a win and none for a loss scenario then its conflicts with the overall purpose and undermines the integrity of the contest.
  17. Any chance Maric and Martin might be required to show some form at Casey first? Despite his tremors, Bennell has shown more than Maric. Why trade down at the moment? If he is fit Sylvia for Bartram.
  18. % is the same value at Rd 1 and at Rd 22. Percentage ebbs and flows on team performance relative to their opposition (who'd have thunk it!!). A draw reflects the evenness of both sides. Dominant teams earn the 4 points and the % enshrines their position. Poor teams can only seek to manipulate to a limited fashion the final outcome of a game. Poor teams at the tail end of the season are to varying degrees playing for a loss to improve draft pick position. In the grand scheme of things teams know if your ratio of your score to the oppositions score is higher/lower than your existing aggregrate % then your aggregate % will increase/decrease. You have spent alot of time erroneously debunking % when its ex poste arbirtary measure of relative performance but your proposal only increases the extent of bias, manipulation and confusion that undermines the integrity of the aim of the game...trying to beat your opposition on the final siren.
  19. Its consideration for a side 3 to 4 weeks out particularly if they are in 9 to 12th spot. But at round 1 I dont think so. Given there long injury list and their next 2 matches I would have thought they would have been satisfied. If they miss out on 4th or even 8th I reckon they will be more pi$$ed off with the games they lost (eg Geelong after being 20 points up).
  20. They have 21 rounds to go. They had given us a pasting. They had no further injuries to add to their mounting list. Why bust a boiler when you had Geelong the following week?
  21. Percentage is simply the aggregate points for and against. It is meant to recognise and measure the scoreboard difference betweeen two sides which reflect the relative performance of both sides on the day. It is not meant to make for better games. Percentages cant be skewed because one goal = 6 points and 1 behind = 1 point. It isnt skewed at all. It reflects the results of the games If there is a blowout in a game it reflects that one team has played really well and one team hasn't. Given the game is played over 22 rounds on different days in seven states and territories percentage is only variable by the fixture and the locations chosen. That's not a flaw in percentages. I would have thought that scoreboard is the ultimate measure of sustained effort. The scoreboard is the judge of winner in the Grand Final so why should it is be any different in a home and away game. No need to complicate something soooo simple and arms length.
  22. Training is about improving skills and there are a range of drills that can be done without having to have pot shots at the sticks.
