I am in the risk averse camp and would not play Petty, particularly when we had a functioning forward line. In saying that now that he is named on the bench I dont see any value in him being the sub so choose to look at the other available options named on the pine. Oliver is just not one. Tmac could be being Hawthorn forwardline is not tall but think less likely than the remaining two. Both Windsor and Hore were good but neither were great (would not have either in our best 10). Windsor was subbed off validating whilst quality he may not be able to run out a game. Hore also has not played much AFL match minutes thus far. I suggest in all instances we are trying to play the longer game but I do hope it is not ahead of risking early wins.

Whilst I dont mind bringing Petty in without getting much touch I do have concern with bringing him in when he has not played a full game. In saying that I anticipate both Petty and Brown will start and we will see high rotation of 2 of JVR, Petty, Brown through the forward line as well as high rest rate for Gawn with JVR chopping out more. I suggest Windsor likely sub otherwise Hore as only other likely option.

To my knowledge Sparrow had no midfield time (indicated by no CBAs). He played a high half forward pressure role and had the second highest pressure acts on ground for us with 24. I have a feeling he will be given high marks for playing the team role.

PREGAME: Rd 01 vs Western Bulldogs
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Agreed. Tomlinson was one of few that beat his direct opponent last week. I would love to know what is expected of him to get a game compared to some who can have limited impact for weeks on end and continue to get a run. -
POSTGAME: Opening Round vs Sydney
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sydney are a quality side. We were too fumbly(did not handle the conditions) and lacked offensive spread away from the contest. Gawn and Lever very disappointing. May and Viney could not have done much more. Howes has a very bright future. We really missed Koz and Laurie, Chandler, Spargo, Billings when on all may as well not played. Good to get that tough game on the postage stamp of a ground out of the way. Best to forget it and move on. -
POSTGAME: Practice Match vs Carlton

We kept a forwardline with two Coleman medalists to 60 points. That's all that matters to me. Tomlinson plays round 0 because the whole works better with him in the defensive 7. -
POSTGAME: Practice Match vs Carlton

Our defensive structure was back to it’s best. Windsor and Billing’s are clearly locks for round 1. Howes did his role and I think he likely plays as it allows Salem to play more mid (which makes a massive difference). Max. Sparrow. Salem best 3 for mine. I would play JVR and Schache as the talls but have JVR as the chopout for Max. Only concern for me is our small forwards minus Koz. A couple of nice cameo touches from each of Kynan, Kolt and Will in the last as well. -
McDonald is not a premiership key defender. One of Tomlinson or TMac will play key back in round 0.
-
No May in the top 50. That was enough for me. The ESPN list is alot more balanced and logical.
-
Round 0 we possiblly face Logan McDonald, Hayden McLean and Joe Amartey. Round 1 likely Naughton, JUH and Darcy. One of Tomlinson/TMac will play.
-
We've tried this before. It doesn't work defensively and actually derails Levers ability to intercept and for us to springboard effectively. Its a shame Turner is out of action but otherwise we need to use one of TMac or Tomlinson as a deep no frills, big body lock down defender. May and Lever need to play their natural game and the springboard needs to come with more run and dare from Bowey, McVee, Rivers, Salem, Howes.

I am confident Jordon will accumulate well on the postage stamp that is the SCG and hopefully carve out a quality career. He had his chances at MFC and did not take them and was too like for some others we have. He was also exposed in other positions on the wider MCG expanses,The Brayshaw retirement does not change the situation with he nor Harmes in my view. Brayshaw had hardly played midfield til late in the year and has not when we were at our best. We need to take this opportunity to inject some difference into our CBAs whether that be Pickett, Salo, Laurie, Rivers or other.

The first part is getting and get it going forward our way. The rest will come. I will take his 5 from 8 clearances over 0 from 22 from NIbbler.

I believe it comes with Kayo Basic plans, if so 2 users can stream/view at the same time.

The Dees Incredibly Frustrating to Watch
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I agree we did not handle the expectation and pressures and still lost twice by the small margins to two quality sides. That’s says to me we just need to get the team mentality right and manage the big moments better. The Petracca talk confirms the players are aware and not denying this. Most other things are in check. -
The Dees Incredibly Frustrating to Watch
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Mainly the same guys that played in both finals that had us in winning positions but didn’t execute. We are no worse off than last year. We did not lose through lack of creating scoring chances but poor execution and conversion away from finals wins. -
I hope for. 1 No injuries. 2. Windsor to lay strong claim for the second wing. 3. Validation of the improvement in Laurie and Howes to be AFL ready. 4. Billings to show some clean kicks into a leading JVR. 5. No injuries.

Sam Van Rooyen in for Ben Brown on LTI?

This is a great idea if SVR has suddenly morphed into a mature age back up ruckmen. -
Max & Jack to Lead Again in 2024
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
How do you think Viney would handle the questions as it relates to Oliver that have and will continue to come? You cant question his on field and on track but the media management is a massive part of the role? Sometimes players form can impact with the additional and perceived responsibilities. Would you risk that with Trac? I dont think this is the year to mess with it but should be from 2025 showing a clear next stage transition including more openly developing the younger layer. -

PRESEASON TRAINING: Friday 26th January, 2024
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Bleasey as that's topic in Melbourne Demons
Goodwin backs in his proven players to a point and puts team synergy above most but he is also known to make a tweak between seasons and make change at a point. The B&F votes of Langdon and Hunter second half of the year show they were not meeting expectations. This year more so than others we are likely to be in a position where players who have done their VFL apprenticeship force their way in and players will need to give way. Billing’s and McAdam are also likely to be given ample oppportunity. Some of this opportunity will be created by the retirement of Hibberd and transition out of some of our depth in Harmes and Jordon. However we could be in a position this year where the form of Turner, Howes, Laurie, Woewodin demands opportunity. I think we learnt our lesson with Bedfords departure that sometimes form needs to outweigh loyalty for your ongoing improvement and list management.- 161 replies

It is not surprising to me that it’s appears from recent reports that Rivers and to some degree Salo are training at least in part for midfield minutes. We have lost midfield depth and that’s before you consider we look likely to not have Clarry for at least the start of the season. We have Disco and Howes appearing to be cherry ripe for senior exposure in our back 7. Our ball use forward of centre has been bland and ineffective. Salem and Rivers are both aggressive, creative kicks. I like the move and you can always revert the plan if it does not prove positive.

It's a lot to ask Disco to compete with Casboult he is giving up x kgs. Gee Jefferson looks bigger this offseason I wonder how many kilos he has added? It certainly at times adds to my observations and considerations of the game. I think its a step too far I understand why this does not matter in general society but they are professional athletes and some things just need to be accepted.
