Aaron Davey

I think the MFC should seriously look at trading Aaron Davey this year. He is a player we could get something decent for, without affecting our structure too much. Here are my reasons:

1. Has had more bad games then good ones this year, and when he is bad he stinks.

2. Is one of the mentally weakest player on our list, and that is saying something!! (i.e. him hitting Selwood).

3. Is a flat-track bully, only plays well when the team is up and going.

4. Is yet to and may never stand up in a big game, see point 2.

I am sure some teams would give a lot for him....Hawthorn, West Coast, Adelaide and St Kilda especially IMO.

What would you accept in return for him, Brocky?

I guess it depends on which club wants him, but I think you could get a high second round pick for him.

If we got a pick in the early 20s for him I'd have a look at it. We've got to seriously have a look at our forwardline and they way they operate without the ball though. I don't uaually sit behind the goals, but I did yesterday and it was painful to watch the Sydney defenders run the ball out with absolute ease as the Melbourne forwards reached for a pie and sauce and waited for the ball to come back down the field. To Davey's credit, he at least chases, but he's still a boy trying to bring down grown men whe he reaches people to tackle them, doesn't kick enough goals, struggles to mark overhead and goes missing in big games. The final point may rule out the better teams from chasing him. I do like Flash, but I've never been as infatuated with him as many have. However, the forwardline can sit down over the offseason and watch a few tapes of how our opposing forwards have chased our defenders. They could learn a few things in the process.

I'd trade Sylvia if we can get a first rounder to use on a KPP for him. I am not convinced he is ever going to live up to his billing.

True. But there's a chance he may get better. Is Davey going to get any better. Davey would be better off in a good side but not the sort of player you need when re-building.

Do you actually watch the game when you attend?

Who hasn't had a shocking season?

Davey has carried this team in past years, and has refused to be overawed in many big games, esp. with his defensive pressure.

He has one of the strongest pair of hands overhead.

After a shocker of a game against the saints in last years finals, he stood up with brilliance in the last 1/4, not kicking the easy goal like some I could name.

2nd in the NAB Rising start in 04.

In other words - you have got to be kidding!

The only way we would get a first round pick, is if teams other teams feel like he(Sylvia) may still get better as well. This window will only be open for so long. So a hard call needs to be made that may come back to bite us, but i feel we would be better sevred trying to strengthen our spine.

Who on our list that is expendable that we would get a first round pick for?

Would someone be dumb enough to take Travis Johnstone?

Great. The inevitable calls to trade our best players. Man I hate it when we dont play well. It makes people say such dumb things.

People on this website are completely losing the plot.

We SHOULD NOT trade our quality youth for 2nd round picks which will get us

a) a different quality youth player 2-3 years behind in development

B) a dud which often happens in 2nd round picks and up.

just rediculous suggesting to trade davey and sylvia for 2nd rounders. just plain stupid in my eyes. sylvia and davey are young and extrmely talented and still have improvement left. especially sylvia. anyone suggesting sylvia be traded for pick 26ish is gonna have egg on their face when he becomes a gun in the next 2 years. this year he has shown great promise.

The ONLY players we should be looking to trade are our 26-27 yrolds who have market value, yet a not integral to our team and havnt turned into the champions we once hoped.

The players who fall into that category are bruce, johnstone and green.

id be happy to trade any of these 3, but id prefer to keep green because he has skill and has shown leadership when he has been captain, and johnstone because he has star quality and great skills.

bruce looks a good trade bait to me because he has high market value, no leadership ability, and average skill. would be great for a top team, but we're developing stage.

By golly I hope you're not the real Bluey Adams because I was a fan of his when I was a kid and I had a lot of time and respect for him when he retired from the game and took up a role as a commentator in the media.

I'm sorry but Travis Johnstone simply does not do enough. His work rate is just not there. He is one of a number of blokes we've got who just happy being an AFL footballer.

WHAT A JOKE OF A THREAD!! seriously this guy has one bad year and idiots are calling for his name to be traded! Trade daniel bell, trade colin sylvia! some of you guys sook on here becoz there are players there aren't part of our future.. well durr these three players are part of our blooy future!! Davey under a new coach will fire up and get back to his 2004, 2005 and 2007 form. bloody hell daniel bell is playing his first injury free year and idoits ( u know who u are!) are calling for his head to be traded. some of these MFC supporters make me sick. and if u watched colin sylvia like i did back in the under 18s u wonder why this kid was such a superstar back then. getting the ball 30 times a week and kicking four goals from the middle gets me excited. ffs he hasn't even had one good tough hard pre season!! be patient you grumpy people!!!

Maybe a coach who will put the fear of god into these players might get a better result than ND got, who knows next year trapper could be back to his absolute best and people who were calling for him, bruce etc to be traded will be loving him all over again.

say we sign up sheedy

theres an extra so many members...

trhen say, he trades aaron davey

not only would we lose so many members (kids especially, he is our face for the young) in 2008, the same kids will stop following melbourne for life, and go follow a team like st kilda

he may not be at his best at the moment, but when he is at his best, there arent many better at the club

While Davey's output can be all or nothing, I can see him being very valuable in a winning side. I think in a team that is up and going, he can be a very important element.

If we had the luxury of a number of pacy players with great foot skills, then I'd consider moving him on. But in a very one-paced side with a plethora of big-bodied midfielders, Davey provides that variety that I think is important for any good team to have.

He does need others playing well around him. But I think he can be very damaging if we string some form together.

f the new coach plays Davey as he has been played before, as a permanent FP, he will then have the energy to chase hard in the F50 and then his tackling will once again cause turnovers and scoring chances, which inturn lifts all the players around him and his own confidence.

With the right coach we have the ability to bounce back into contention fairly quickly. Trading away any of our top players would ensure that the bounce doesn't happen. How many of you remember 1997, when we only won 4 games and finished with the spoon, only to make the prelim final in 1998. In 97 there were calls to trade everyone (including Viney, who ended up winning the BF and making All Australian in 98). The only player of note we ended up moving on was Sean Charles to Carlton. We stuck with our better, experienced players and developed some great young players (McDonald, Leoncelli, Farmer, Robertson, Yze etc) and had a great year. For those, names substitute Davey, McLean, Sylvia, Bate, Dunn, Newton. The potential is there to improve dramatically, but we need a coach who can get the best from Trapper, Bruce, Green etc, and hopefully extract another year or two from the likes of White, Yze and Robbo. Our best team still looks pretty good!

without affecting our structure too much.

So we'll have Nathan Brown and who as our permanent small forwards?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
