I suspect most would agree with Kane Cornes that Kozzie has the highest ceiling on our list, but who else do we have that has the potential to become one of the best players in the league? Langford is the obvious one for me. Maybe also Windsor, Lindsay or even Disco?

As an aside, geez there is some exciting talent coming through at other clubs.

    Good question.

    Agree with your assessment of who our potentials are. I find myself having feelings of tempered excitement in '26 watching our young kids develop. The loss of Trac and Clarrie was heartbreaking, but at least of lot of the underlying angst seems to have gone also. Expectation has been replaced by possibilities and that is a feeling I am more used to with my club.

    Also, yes, what talent there is at other clubs. I, for one, can't wait to see them all in the upcoming State of Origin match.

    Tommy Matthews would challenge Kozzy for this honour.

    At 171cm, both would find the ceiling very high indeed.

    I wouldn't include him over Langford, Windsor, XL and so on...

    But not many 194cm mids going round who mark the pill like Culley!

    Well, credit to Cornes for a somewhat original topic which has an overall positive tone and can stimulate an earnest discussion instead of looking to bleepstir.

    Nice of the pundits to nominate our boy Bailey Humphrey, as a bonus Demon from our 2028 premiership team.

    I don't think Kysaiah Pickett will ever quite accumulate the ridiculous numbers of Gary Ablett Jr, but his impact on games could be comparable.

    It is fun to think that the obvious other contender over the coming seasons is such a radically different player in Langford.

    Other than that, the optimistic side of me can see a number of our younger players becoming excellent, but maybe not the 'marquee' mega players. I am always hoping for a team that goes deep on excellence, the likes of Kade Simpson, Shaun Burgoyne, David Mundy, Jarrad McVeigh, playing out sterling 15 to 20 year careers and seeing the club through ups and downs.

    Which puts me in mind of our very own Tom McDonald. 'Best young player' in 2012, and since then has rarely, and perhaps only from injury, been out of our B&F top 10, with a few podium finishes thrown in. Much of it while filling list holes so vast they were given geological notations.

    Just making a mental note to get properly cranky at anyone who decides to hang [censored] on him as he approaches retirement.

      One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
