Rebuild or Renovate?

Featured Replies

This is absolutely a rebuild of the list.

6 players delisted, with only 1 game played for seniors in 2025 between them.

7 of the top 10 in the B& F over 28 years of age.

And with these players available essentially for the whole season and with an "easy" draw we finish bottom 6 for the second year running. ...

Only 2 players traded in since 2021 played this season.

Two of the best mids ever to play at the club going to other clubs.

A new coach has 1 opportunity to clean out a list, and it is when they arrive = rebuild.

6 players delisted is pretty standard I would have thought.

Kozzy, Langford, Lindsay, Windsor, Turner, Rivers, Bowey, Chandler, JVR, Kolt and Howes is a good young core of 11.

No doubt we need more to join them, which is why I class this as list management evolution rather than rebuild. Surely, a rebuild would denote a total clearing of the decks but we've already had 4-5 years of bringing in that talent. In Kozzy and Rivers case, 6 years and Chandler 7.

Then we have a further 9 premiership players that add varying levels of value in Max, Viney, Lever, Petty, Salem, Langdon, Mihocek, Fritta and Sparrow.

And some potential in AMW, Culley, Adams, Kentfield and Heath.

It's been my view that we still need 1-2 elite mids to add to that young core. Humphrey would be one, and then hopefully our 2026 pick too.

Then we're basically at the 2016 stage of the list build. Time to target and acquire players through trades or free agency ala Lever, May and Langdon. If it's through trading and not FA, it's likely we'll need to sacrifice first round picks like we did to acquire Lever and May. Hopefully this is during 2027-2028 when Tassie compromises those drafts.

If on top of this, we can do some shrewd business with second round picks in trade (like Langdon) or draft in a best 22 from the round 2 (like Fritta, Petty etc), by 2028 we'll be in the window.

So maybe I'm being pedantic, but I don't view this as a rebuild. King has too many pieces and potential pieces at his disposal already. And no doubt, this was his pitch to land the role. Clear the decks of poor cultural elements and the small margins that he talks about, become smaller with everyone on the same page, with an aggressive, attacking game style.

It's a rebuild, but we're trying to avoid slipping into NM/WCE territory. I don't ever want to be there again. 2008-2014 were terrible for the most part, where a 'win' was to be still in the game at 3/4 time.

We're too far away to be able to win a premiership with Petracca and Oliver. Max has maybe 2 years left at elite level? Much better to build a new team around the likes of Langford, Lindsay, Windsor and Pickett where we'll be up and challenging from 2027 and beyond.

Why did King get the job?

He he sell a rebuild with years at the bottom and then returning to finals

Or a McRae type rebound with a clean out of targeted players and bringing in new talent

Imo, it is clearly the latter

% of 93 this year shows we are in most games. A new game plan and a reinvigoration of the club and it's standards and culture can do wonders

Philosophical, optimistic, positive - and he was not a part of selection of this coach either.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
