The boys are out already. Half an hour earlier than planned. It looks as though it’s just the players who are flying to Alice. They’re flying out this arvo. Shane and AMW are already there.

Vines is out there training with the others

Hendo and Bill are here. Jai isn’t.

Kozzie came off limping slightly. He popped painkillers and is fine according to Steve, one of the trainers.

Never! Steve is one of the very few Dees diehards among the staff. He’s barracked for Melbourne his entire life therefore he hates Essendon and Collingwood just like we all do 😁

The extended squad all present, together with Marty Hore (presumably Marty not yet ready to play at Casey). The Casey squad is already en-route to Sydney. We speculate that Laurie was present this morning, until it was clear that Viney had completed all his protocols. Laurie did not participate in the match sim (Henderson and Adams did). So we suspect that Laurie may fly to Sydney to play with Casey and Adams and Henderson will travel to Alice as carryovers.

Kosi does look a little sore and had his ankle re-strapped - hopefully he "gets up" for an Alice special.

After training there was an interesting session with one unknown individual watched (and taped) by our recruiting team. We speculate that it may be an Irish possible.

Finally the women appeared for their session. We still await an AFLW fixture......

Marty trained well and has been told he’ll be playing with Casey next weekend.

The AFLW fixture is expected to be released this afternoon.

I think you’re right about Bill. I saw Richo having what looked like a serious talk with him away from everyone else after which Bill went back to the rooms.

Thanks Ghosty - noticed that interaction too. Bill hasn't done much wrong and would probably be in the AFL side if we weren't so beautifully healthy. Probably words of encouragement from Richo just "to be ready" when the time comes....

They spoke for quite some time and Bill didn’t look upset. In fact, he beamed and threw me one of these 🫶🏼 on his way back to the rooms. Love that kid.

Yikes! I hope management double-check they provide the right players with the right tickets, to the right airport to the right destination. Based on forward entries the last three years - big chance Kozi ends up playing for Casey this weekend in Sydney.

The squad was down on the Paddock early, there were 27 of them.

Hore was in full training, after doing a test with Selwyn.

Laurie doing only a few of the drills.

Henderson and Adams in with the group.

Viney looking strong and refreshed.

The noise volume during Sims was great, many into supporting each other, getting the structures right, with calls such as, pick up the loose players, and your ball, go.

The drills had them running hard on the Wings. Two groups, with the offence outnumbering the defense. They wanted them to push hard and fast through to the forward area. The coaches want them to break the lines by any way possible, an example was, tap/palm it forward came the instructions.

Love what the coaches are doing. Often seen educating one on one.

The coaches are not working in the line groups. I would say, the backline coach Basset is a defensive coach, and will input to the forward players as much as the mids and backs, when it comes to restricting the opposition's ball.

The groups still broke into their lines, prior to goal kicking, though much of the action was player led. Most of the squad after separation, were mids, with two forwards and 5 backs.

Chaplin appears to be the same, getting involved with all the player's offensive styles.

Radford stays connected to the mids and the stoppages.

Jones has the boots on and the umpires whistle. He continues to be a lead by example, and is sociably with them.

Goody involved with them all, the only time he stepped back from the squad was at goal kicking practice, when he got over to his assistant coaches.

The goal kicking was performed with a high standard, minimal wind with a heavy air (humid) helped the ball fly. A few were trying the Kossie barrel, including one or two from Kossie, who was happy with what he produced.

The sims are good to watch, we are switched on, working well as a group and have a high intensity.

If you’d told me at the start of the season that after 11 rounds we’d be 5-6 but I’d be feeling as positive about the club as I am, I’d have suggested you got your head read.

Just have to keep this momentum going Dees.

As long as it's not @picket fence reading, you're all good.

Viney to miss … just announced. that’s gotta be super worrying.

I would have thought Laurie would replace him but seems his on his way to Sydney?

Did Viney do much in the forward line area

Yes, I saw Viney doing most of his training/sims infront of the ball.

Harvey Wallbanger and I were just speculating as to Bill possibly flying to Sydney to play for Casey. Maybe he will replace Vines 🤷‍♀️

Interesting that the team list on the AFL site just swapped JVR in for Viney into the 18. I suspect at 5 pm we will find that JVR is an emergency, because he is in Sydney ready to play for Casey tomorrow.

Vines is flying to Alice and will train (a little like Clayton did a couple of years ago!) and Henderson will come into the 23. Either Hendo or Sharp I expect to be sub. Final question is which plane Bailey Laurie is on....?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
