Who would have guessed, crp weather in Queensland in early March, time to bury round 0 AFL. The worst idea amongst many other bad ideas

What’s with the hype on Gold Coast? Josh Jenkins and co acting like they are certainties based on what, talent? They very well may spike and make the top 4, but how about they start winning away from home before even contemplating their chances as a flag threat. Heck, in spite of us having a bog ordinary 2024, we still smashed them at home when they were winning all their home matches.

Everyone acting like Rioli is some sort of messiah recruit.

A lot of brain dead predictions so far this season while most have already written us off.

If the Geelong v Brisbane game is postponed, then there is a good chance they play in the bye week that both teams have, around 28 to 30th March.

For us, it would mean that the Cat won't get a week off before they play us on the 4th of April.

Not sure if that's good or bad...

Haven't the Cat's been notoriously bad after the bye in recent times???

Why didn’t the AFL reschedule the QLD games already?

play them elsewhere and/or another time this weekend. The MCG is sitting there empty in lovely weather

to wait til the last minute and disadvantage teams to have no bye round is poor (if that eventuates)

The geriatric Cats not getting a bye is fantastic news for everyone aside from the Cats

I think it is good for us.

Disruptive to the Cats, and if they have a bad start to season they won't be able to easily reset, or fine tune.

Aren't the Cats getting the extra bye round because they could've started a week earlier than the others.

If their opening game is postponed and their early bye round is now a game week, they should still get the mid season byes.

It is an almost certainty to be postponed. I suspect it will be to a date to be advised on Friday or Saturday after the initial damage assessment.

Being on the Brisbane River there is no way a game proceeds at the Gabba on Thursday night.

The degree of concern in Brisbane is palpable. AFL in danger of an own goal if they delay postponing the game.

The GC game is a little different being scheduled for Saturday

There will still be rain around the area and the possible clean up, until the low pressure moves. Probably less wind though.

Postpone both games, as the spectators may have more on their plate then a game in sub-standard conditions.

They would want to make sure accommodation and transport are on board with rescheduling or cancellations!

Agree. There's a small chance though that it may be a non event. A few weeks ago a level 5 cyclone was heading straight for Australia's main iron ore port of Port Hedland. It ended up crossing 100kms south as a level 3 and damage was minimal.

Nature is hard to predict sometimes

afl is clearly waiting for the qld govt to cancel all commercial flights

that way they don't cancel the games, and are forced to compensate the broadcasters for not having the game at the ascribed time, but instead they can say it was outside of their control

it's only a matter of time til it happens

How cynical but so true. Shades of the F1 non cancellation on the outbreak of covid and the lawsuit over the post race concert.

Don't be surprised if Scott requests that Melbourne play their Round 3 match against the Gold Coast in Darwin as compensation.

AFL's full statement on postponing Queensland's two Opening Round matches:

The AFL has today moved to reschedule Thursday night’s season opening match between the Brisbane Lions and the Geelong Cats in Brisbane, along with Saturday’s Gold Coast SUNS vs Essendon match on the Gold Coast.

Out of an abundance of caution and after ongoing communication with the Queensland Government, the Bureau of Meteorology and Stadiums Queensland, the AFL made the decision now to ensure the health and safety of clubs, players, officials and – importantly - the wider southeastern Queensland and northern NSW community remains the priority.

The AFL will announce the alternate schedule for these matches as soon as possible as we continue to work with clubs and venues on possible scenarios. The rescheduled matches won’t be played during Opening Round.

Home club members will be contacted by their respective clubs shortly, while all other ticket holders will be contacted directly by the ticketing agent, regarding changes to match arrangements.  (GABBA -Ticketmaster, People First Stadium – Ticketek).

“As I said yesterday, the priority is that we do everything we can to ensure the health and safety of everyone in and around any potential cyclone zone or community impacted by the forecast heavy rains and storm surges.” AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said.

“It is a very uncertain situation that is unfolding, and our thoughts are with everyone in southeast Queensland and northern NSW that may be impacted. Ultimately, we hope this weather event doesn’t eventuate, but we know everyone needs to prepare accordingly and we don’t want our games to be a distraction to those preparations.

“We want to make the decision now to give clubs and fans certainty in an uncertain environment and allow anyone from Queensland who would normally be involved in this game through coaching, playing, attending or working at the venue time to be home with their families and available in the community if required.

“I want to thank our clubs for their support and patience, our broadcasters for being aligned with our view that the community and public safety must always come first, the venues and venue partners and our fans for their understanding.

“We also encourage all our supporters in the Queensland area to please follow all the directions from the Queensland Government in preparing for Cyclone Alfred.

“I also want to acknowledge our AFL staff in Queensland, at our office in Yeronga, and our game development officers around the state, all whom we are presently working to assist as needed.”

Opening Round will continue with Friday night’s Sydney Swans vs Hawthorn match at the SCG, and Sunday’s GWS GIANTS vs Collingwood match at ENGIE Stadium.
