2024 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

Harrison Oliver is a Melbourne supporter. Hopefully he returns in 2 years time.

Harry Armstrong drifting out lol. Clubs actually realising he's not that good.

Only very good players drafted so far and no one with a desperate need for key forwards outside Richmond. Faull’s more ready made which is important for Richmond, they could kill Armstrong by exposing him in a [censored] side.

Be surprised if he doesn’t go soon but we’re seeing the crazy depth of the draft right now.

I note that Xavier Lindsay from Gippsland Power is rated quite highly in the ESPN's top 50.

This is what they say about him...

"Lindsay oozes class with ball in hand as an outside midfielder, with his silky left foot a lethal weapon in his arsenal. He's an outstanding leader and garners rave reviews from coaches about the standards he sets. It's difficult to see how Lindsay doesn't succeed at the next level - he has huge positional versatility with a speed-endurance blend to go with beautiful skills. In a midfield-heavy draft he should be considered firmly in that top group.

Best traits similar to: Josh Kelly"

Should the Demons consider him with pick #9 perhaps?

Bump.

Bump.

I think great minds think alike when it comes to Xavier Lindsay. 😉

I am incredibly pleased that Jason Taylor and the rest of the Melbourne Demons recruiting team recognized that we desperately needed more elite kicks in our team.

Having players that can hit our forwards "lace out" on the chest with kicks will definitely help us kick winning scores!

One kid out of Queensland that has improved this year is Ty Gallop. Plays key forward at local club Maroochydore in QAFL as a 17 year old. He’s not Jed Walter but can take pack marks, loves a goal and has physical presence even as a youngster. He can kick 45/50 metres easily. Records this year shows kicked 8 goals in 3 Coates league games for the Brisbane Lions academy,  4 goals in 2 Under18 championships games for Allies and Kicked 30 goals in 9 QAFL games for Maroochydore (including 16 in last three games of the year). Dominated the last game of the year versus morningside. He is unfortunately tied to the Lions academy but sure to bolt up recruitment lists.  Not sure the Lions have ability to match as they will have invested heavily in Ashcroft and Marshall.  Aggressive young key forwards are hard to find. Might not be top 50 but Dees have to find some gems with skill and some real toughness in their style.  Reminds me of Logan Morris in style.

The Lions academy !!! Gallop showed plenty in the intraclub yesterday v Pies v Suns.  Big. Strong. Future key forward.  This academy rort is proving to be a huge advantage for the developing states … just happened they were premiers last year. 😡

26 in the academy. 5 of them are under team academy. Then 3 father sons.  That leaves 18/26 as “available”.  Harvey Langford was very good this year for Stingrays.   Strong taller mid with good left foot disposal.  Not overawed in the contest even as an underager this year.

Happy with this early crow and happy he’s in the red and blue !!! Rising star. Definitely. 👏👏👏👏👏

Last weeks Coates League player of the week was Gippsland Power captain Xavier Lindsay.  Had 32 disposals in the midfield, with high efficiency, using his left foot deadly disposal.  He had the good mix of skill, smarts and athletic ability.  Lock him in as a future star.

12 months on.

Absolutely great that XL20 was drafted in the red and blue !! He’s got the skills and footy IQ that will see him eventually move into a midfield and be a future star.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
