That absolute stinks and is unfair.

However, Port, Carlton, GWS and Sydney also play on the Sunday so one of the 5 clubs including us was always going to draw the short straw in terms of a Thursday night final.

And secondly, it’s no different to someone getting concussed on prelim final weekend. The AFL aren’t going go to suddenly make any exemptions.

Only one team had a <12 day 'bye' this year

Only one team had a <12 day bye last year

Only one team potentially has a < 12 day bye in this year's finals

Do you see the the link?

Why do we need to play any game on Thursday?

Friday, Sat day, Sat twilight, Sat night.
At least two finals will likely be interstate so it’s an easy solution.

Fairness has nothing to do with it Jaded. It's about maximum exposure which = $$$$$$$$$$$$$  The only driver in this.

That said, the AFL know which clubs they can bully and those they can't/won't

It’s not a conspiracy you clowns, it’s the AFL maximising crowds and dollars, as they always do

I'm so much more enlightened now. Thanks Gil

Hope Port get the job done convincingly tomorrow.  We want week one at the G, our home ground against the Pies. Don’t want to travel.
That way we can treat our last game like a pre finals season hit out.  Try a few things but not give much away. Win lose or draw, it won’t matter.

The real season starts in a fortnight.  I’d like to think that we are serious contenders. GO DEES!!!

So explain us clowns 🤦🏻‍♂️... Why is Thur night better than Friday night?

Didn’t even think about that, and channel 7 could promote it as the biggest Saturday of football on the calendar.

However there’s clearly a commitment to play a Thu night game in week 1.

Is there? Make it one of the elimination finals then.
Top 4 should be Friday and Saturday nights. End of story.

Thurs night footy in finals makes no sense whatsoever. Anyone who likes it doesn't have my support with their endeavours in life.

I’d say it’s implied that they’ll always have a Thursday night final on week 1 given the pre finals break and the flexibility it provides for scheduling.

Richmond finished 1st in 2018 and played a big Thursday night qualifying final against Hawthorn in front of 91k so there’s precedent unfortunately.

On the flip side, imagine going into work on Friday and the weekend to follow with the satisfaction of beating the filth in a qualifying final (on a Thursday night)

And I'm now choosing to take this as an omen that the 1st place Pies won't win the flag.

GO DEES

Why don't they just put one of the elimination finals there. I mean they were floating a 9th vs 10th in the bye for Christ's sake.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
