Long before he was taking the wicket of a sooky English keeper, Alex Carey was a footballer. He was named captain of GWS at its inception but was shafted when GWS joined the AFL, without ever having played a game.

Ah.

But the prime ministerial connection?

Second suggestion for coach has been privately delivered. Feeling confident about this one.

...and rightly so!

👏👏👏

Last in to the quiz, LDVC is first with this particular 'first'. There's a big second area in the podium ready to acknowledge anyone else.

A pretty big 'Ooops!' from me: my 'coach' has, in fact, played 16 games. Thank you, @tilly18, for pointing this out, in PM-ing your correct answer. I hope you don't mind, @La Dee-vina Comedia, if I pop Tilly next to you on the first place area for this.

I can only think the bio I read was from 2022. So it's not just any 16 games: they've been very recent and my coach is a Premiership Player!

🤦🏽‍♂️ So, my grovelling apologies to...

...HER!

With this quiz pretty much wrapped up, the topic starting, posting, searching and messaging involved has again reminded how impressive this site is.

Thank you, @Demonland!

I haven't taken part in this quiz but I'm happy that everyone seems to have had a good time doing it!

Next time, then, Layz?

'Everyone' might have over-implied its penetration! And good time?. Hmmm... 😄

Off 'on the road' now. Next puzzle in August. I'm thinking personal invitations, to get the two-dozen-plus 'regulars' out of the woodwork 🎣

Simister put me off. I was sure I’d remember a politician of that name.

Ditto with Mithen.

But now I realise that Christian names came into consideration.

I should have got it!

🥺 for you. But you played, so 👏

Just remembered the '...one of the famous did have a notable football presence!...' bit ('the famous' now solved/revealed as PMs).

Anyone care to guess who, and what?

There is a photo in Brunswick FC history of something like 1910 or 1920 Reserves Premiers” and the note - along the lines, “the player in the front row with big smile and long sleeves only played one more season - but went on to greater things as Australian wartime Prime Minister, John Curtin”.

That's brilliant, Radar! What research! A podium all to yourself! And thanks for playing 🙂

Speaking of podiums, though, @La Dee-vina Comedia got my intended famous one. Congrats!

Apparently Curtin remained a paid up lifelong member.
Between dealing with Churchill and Roosevelt, still found time to ring and wish his old club good luck on the morning of a big game.

Not Melbourne, but another Roy Boys one, and a bit of a surprise: Don Chipp, 3 games, 1947.

I wonder how Curtin's notable eyes fared in games?

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
