I would have thought there would be no chance of another Victorian-based team.

That’s true and not likely but in theory the size of Bendigo/Ballarat and local region combined could support an AFL team.

Only if say the western suburban team that plays some games at Ballarat were to relocate.  Could still be called Goldfield Western Bulldogs

And as for a 20th team 😮🤗😡 further diluting the talent pool 😡😱

They might claim that they'd been given the shaft.

I wouldn't be surprised if half of those 12,000 tickets were giveaways and corporate hospitality related.

I agree, that tenth game is unlikely to warrant an audience but the reality is businesses will spend money to have their logos on jumpers, footballs and hoardings at the ground. There will also be logos on the grass, on the LEDs outside and inside the stadium plus radio and TV coverage with yet more advertisements (mostly Ladbrokes, Sportsbet and TAB)...I could go on.

The 20th team/tenth game will generate $$$. Maybe not enough to put teams 19 and 20 in the black in year 1 (I suspect GWS/GC business case is yet to turn a real profit) but the AFL doesn't need business cases that pay for themselves in 3 years like normal businesses.

I do wonder if the AFLW could ever run in the black as a standalone. Perhaps someday but probably not while we're still driving cars with combustion engines.

I think in the long term certain teams will be stuck at the bottom of the ladder for extended periods, sponsoring a team becomes less attractive.

Honestly I think the AFLW has a place but they rushed into giving them 18 teams. 1 team from each of WA, SA, NSW & QLD with 4 teams from Melbourne with every team playing each other twice should of been the format for many years.

So the Lions just beat a side by 20 goals  and it wasn’t North or the Eagles. The push for a 19th & 20th team becomes even more absurd.

Presumably the team won't be called "Hobart" for that reason. Naming it "Tasmania" is all encompassing, although it diminishes the possibility of a second team ever being located in that State.

Really it’s only a name the AFL would not be stopped or afraid to do it but luckily this suggestion is about as live a possibility as the previously real Tassie Devil.

Overreaction. They are no worse than we were in 2013/14 and have been smashed by a freak run of injuries. Notably they don’t seem to have even thought of a review of their injury demise or their high performance dept.

its not dissimilar to Eagles situation also where the list fading has been underestimated and a surplus of all types of injury had accelerated their demise.

It’s one of the best things in a way when a former powerhouse has a few years to ponder how life is from the bottom up. You don’t often hear much from them for a year or two either as their arrogance subsides in the reality of the real world of an AFL battler on the field.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
