Melbourne’s Turnover Game

Total Points from Turnover Diff

R1-10      +282 Pts

R11-23   +15 Pts

AFL Rank

R1-10          1st

R11-23.       8th

Finals - Points from Turnover Diff
• QF v Sydney Swans -40 Pts
• SF v Brisbane Lions -21 Pts
Pressure Watch
• No.16 pressure rating in 2022
• No.3 pressure rating in 2021

Their turnover game summed up their year. The back half of the season they fell to average in that area and the result was a straight set finals exit. The signs for improvement are there though - the stats gurus expect them to be up there again this year given their defensive profile.

IMPROVING AND DECLINING DEMONS

*Biggest differential on form based on ranking points from 2022-2021*

Improvers
1. Angus Brayshaw
2. Harrison Petty
3. Tom Sparrow
Decliners
1. Christian Salem
2. Jake Lever
3. Lachie Hunter

Angus Brayshaw went into the middle and his output increased. Salem’s injury affected year hurt him. Lachie Hunter only played 10 games at the Doggies and his out put waned.
Jake Lever’s intercepting was above average but his disposals were down (decrease of 4).

Teams changed the way they played against us and we did not respond. As well we were cooked from being hyped up too early

'Kick long to Lever or may and you lose against Melbourne' is the mantra for most opposition teams. We need to be able to respond better to chaos balls or balls that are run into the fwd line with handballs and/or short kicks a la Sydney or Collingwood.

The pressure rating is the big one for me. Cant score on turnover if you're not putting pressure on. And its just workrate and fitness. We were clearly cooked 2nd half of the year and didnt rest anyone. I would wager we'll be back top 5 for pressure this year barring injuries again

On top of the above, I think the coach fell into the age-old trap of playing favourites. When senior players were out of form they weren't dropped for a rest even when there were guys at Casey who could fill in and at lease make oppo coaches think a bit.

Lever battled injury also.

One of the biggest factors for me really. Once that dropped so did we and our intercept game depends on it. Granted there were times when it came back in bursts like both Bris wins or Freo in Perth but it was generally not where it needed to be.
