Should we start talking about potential recruits for our fwd line next year?

I am starting to worry we don't have the solution in our list at the moment.

It's been interesting to see how we've changed from a forward pressure defensive team, to a more passive defence that relies on structure and absorbing momentum. Do you think it's to do with playing a style that will get wins while (firstly) building fitness in the early part of the year after a shorter and interrupted pre-season (COVID), and then (secondly) while the training loads ramp up in the mid-part of the year (where we are now)?

Is this by design (not losing, just the game strategy) and that fatigue is to blame for the lack of polish? Or is it bad habits creeping in that haven't been arrested?

In almost every game this year we've played that dynamic and aggressive style for small parts of the game that has gotten us out to a 4-6 goal lead, and then we've tried to control the tempo and absorb pressure. Even against Freo and the Swans we got out to a decent lead off the back of that style in Q2 and Q1 respectively, but we're unable to maintain that lead (without May).

Can we back in and give a shout out to the Demon Army cheersquad for all their great work on the show tonight guys?

Getting a bit sick of seeing them cop it on threads here lately after all the time and effort they put in.

Two points on Goodies press conference stuck out for me:

One, he emphasised our forward method as much as forward personnel performance.  There were also some interesting observations in the demonland postgame chat about our forward entry quality depending on where the offensive push begins, eg full back vs half back/centre, etc. While I’m sure personnel performance will receive some attention, I’d be curious to hear the panels thoughts on forward method.

Two, I was struck by how frank Goodwin was about M Brown playing better football than Weideman.  He’s normally more encouraging let’s say, but it did make me wonder whether he’s lost patience with Weideman.  Curious what you thought of M Brown’s game and whether he’s clearly playing better football than Weid or whether he’s more marginal.

Another fantastic podcast fellas.  Something I genuinely look forward to ….… win, lose or draw!

ps. Do we need an extraordinary poddy this week, given that there was so much emphasis on Monday, about the importance of Mr S. May’s inclusion against the Pies? ……… (facetious comment 😃).

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
