As promised (threatened?) here is the last quiz for this footy season.

However, I do reserve the right to post others in quiet periods over the off season.  :D

I believe this is the hardest teaser so far and hopefully it will occupy some of the time leading up to tomorrow's team announcement.

In keeping with Melbourne playing in the big one, this week's team consists solely of past Demon players.  It's quite a strong side.

Can you identify the quirky factor that they have in common?

Answers in a PM only please to prolong the pain.  Incorrect responses will be mentioned to prevent others falling for the same trap.

B:  Anthony Ingerson   Alistair Nicholson   Nathan Brown

H/B:  Graeme Yeats  Jared Rivers   Rod Grinter

C:  Robert Flower (C)   Todd Viney (VC)   Scott Thompson

H/F:  Clint Bizzell   Brad Miller   Russell Robertson

F:  Ricky Petterd   Shaun Smith   Steven Armstrong

R:  Mark Jamar   Cameron Bruce   Darren Kowal

I/C:  Darren Jolly   Matthew Febey   Luke Williams   Daniel Bell

While that may be true LD-vC, we both know that's not the answer I'm looking for.

We can also eliminate the left-field response that they all named "The Shawshank Redemption" as their favourite movie  That only applies to 75% of this team, I'm afraid.

I can also put to rest the outrageous claim that they all favoured wearing  a leopard print g-string under their footy shorts on match day.  The correct answer applies to every one of the above players, not just a few of them.

They have all been suspended or fined for something a Geelong player got away with the previous week?

Sounds plausible LG, but I don't think Robbie ever got fined or suspended!

Don't forget:  Answers in a PM only please to prolong the pain.

A couple of more answers have trickled in but are off the mark.

*  They were not all Melbourne supporters growing up as kids.

*  They did not all kick a goal in their first game.

Told you it was a difficult teaser!  If it remains unsolved, I'll post a clue later on this evening.

Another incorrect suggestion has been received, but the answer is not that these players wrote with the opposite hand to their natural kicking side.

I can also rule out the latest response that these players had a win in their first finals game.

OK thrillseekers, I have buckled and can now provide a clue for you.

Unlike the vast majority of my previous teasers, this one isn't based on the players' surnames and their similarity to another group (eg movie stars, cricketers, drummers etc.).

Rather, this one is purely football based and relates to these players time at MFC.

I'll leave this open overnight and post the answer around lunchtime tomorrow if it's still dragging on.

I can reveal that one poster (you won't believe who) has cracked it.  Can anybody else solve the mystery?

Some more erroneous entries:

*  They were not all vegetarians at some stage (Mazer's "Holy cow" wasn't a clue)

*  It's not that 75% of those players never won the Bluey.

*  It has nothing to do with the players win/loss ratio.

*  It doesn't relate to the number of games they played nor the number of years they spent at the club.

*  No connection at all to the coaches they played under.

There have been a couple of hints dropped, subtle as they may be.  :D

Final clue!  The teaser relates to a statistical oddity that applies to all these players.

Answer to be revealed in an hour's time with still only the one correct response at this stage.

You are closer than you realise, LD-vC.

I've had another incorrect answer that they all had a chance to win the game with a late score but didn't

A second person has identified the common link.  I don't know what possessed them to think of it.

Solution to be revealed at high noon.  Bronze still up for grabs!

... is the correct answer!

Only joking.  I've had one late entry suggesting it was based on their draft number, but that's not it.

The quirky thing that all these players share is that, incredibly,  they all had at least one game where they recorded no disposals.  In some cases this was because they sustained an early injury or got knocked out and were unable to continue to play.

My source for this scarcely believable statistic is the excellent and unimpeachable site Demonwiki, which has a section titled "Lists" that is a most informative and entertaining read.

The inclusion of the great Robbie Flower in this side was guaranteed to cause confusion.

Gold medal (again) to Mazer Rackham who did provide hints in his responses and silver to Lucifer's Hero.

Well done them.  It was, as promised, a very difficult brainteaser.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • POSTGAME: Geelong

The Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, falling to 0–4 after a more spirited showing against the Cats at Kardinia Park. Despite the improved effort, they went down by 39 points, and the road ahead is looking increasingly grim.
