Who should our next coach be?

Featured Replies

I remember Roosy saying Goody talked his way into the role talking about contest, defence and Brand.

Since taking over, we've totally lost our brand, the first think he dismantled was our defence and we are good in the contest because we have elite contest players, but we have no system at all around that, we're getting by purely on talent.

outside of the Crows and Norf, every other team has shown more consistent system and chemistry as a team than we have and that is 100% Simon Goodwins fault.

If we had to go down the Yze track then he at least has to have a senior adviser with him to help him in that role. A bit like what Fagan was to Daniher/Clarkson.

None of these Alan Richardson failed types.

I thought Brendan McCartney was perfect until Craig Jennings decided to put his nose out of the joint.

No coincidence that our development has turned to [censored] without McCartney...

Yeah agree, first I’ve heard of that one, people in my circles say Goodwin put both McCartney and Jennings’ noses out of joint.

Given you've got Longmuir in here, Yze should be in calculation.

My understanding is that Freo wanted Yze, but he didn't want to move his family.

Fair point, I'm not sure where Yze is in searching for a senior coaching role. Love to have him on board.

How many years had Fagan done his apprenticeship for? I think young coaches get thrown in too quickly these days perhaps? There's really no way Simon couldve kept/overhauled our club culture as well as coach and develop, in that regard, I feel sorry for him.

Folks, we want Ross Lyon and here’s why:

My eldest brother is mates with him and I can get ALL the goss and print it right here on good ol’ Demonland in a jiffy.

??

I understand what you’re saying. I guess though, there have been too many glaring deficiencies that can’t really be put down to any kind of overload on his part. Specifically game-day decisions - poor match-ups/lack of adaptability/one-dimensional game plans. I think Roos did a lot to aid the culture too. Not sure Goodwin stepped into anything like the rabble Roos was confronted with.

I think you would find it impossible to come into a worse off club than what Roos had in his first year with us. We were completely inept, he always said his job was to create a strong foundation and it was the job of Goodwin after him build something worthwhile. He did his job and without a doubt left Goodwin with a team worth over, Goodwin looked like he was on the right track in 2018 but perhaps it was masked by certain players playing their best seasons and high confidence within the club.

The old cliche of players playing "above themselves".

There's a current experienced assistant coach who I reckon could be looked at should Goody not be around next year. Highly rated in AFL circles, narrowly missed out on a couple of senior jobs, has strengths that we need and has a connection with Richardson too. Not to mention recent premiership experience in charge of a midfield.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
