I’ve put it down to who his old man is.

And he was 100% worth a shot on the back of who his father was and being able to sign him as a Category B Rookie.
He can fill some gaps and is a decent athlete.
I just can't see him solving any of our onfield programs and would see him as the back-up to the back-up in just about every part of the ground.

Agree. His footy IQ is poor and not the answer imo. I know others don’t agree, but I think the Kangas could look at him and whilst a punt, we could try to grab the out of favour Mason Wood off the Roos as a swap.

We could throw Preuss in as the steak knives. The two dumbest players on our list

He didn't come through the under 18's like most give him time he's worth persisting with.

How much time do you give someone who has shown nothing? He isn’t a natural footballer and unfortunately will never be. And that is because he didn’t have that junior development.  Clutching at straws with this bloke, time to move on

Another year I say his form in the scratch matches have been good.

I would rather see a spot given to Nathan Jones so he can get to 300 games. Even though I believe the game has gone past Nathan as well, if that is what it comes down to..........

He is a natural forward and looked in form in the preseason.

Then they decided to play him back.

Like Harmes could ruin his career

Yes.  Hes a forward.  Totally lost down back.  Another ridiculous decision from our coaching staff.

He's really not...

Been tried there before in real games and it didn't work.

'Wise' spells it out pretty well here.

Is he a forward?  Apart from a few goals in a pre-season game, what has he done to suggest he'll be any good there?

I was happy to give him time to develop down back, but I'm not sure if he's going to solve many issues by getting a run up forward.  He strikes me as a very athletics, but low football IQ, type of player, and we don't really need that right now.

I've been on record since just about Joel's first game as been one of his detractors. He has great athleticism, we all know that and poor IQ etc, but we may need someone to play foil for Weideman at the expense of Tom, who can barely run right now.

Would we prefer Smith or Brown? Brown can get out the back for a cheapie, but can he play second ruck? It's dangerous to mix the midfield set up too much, given the lack of connectivity and understanding between Preuss and the on ballers yesterday, but perhaps that was a misnomer?

I think we're going to be forced to make a move on McDonald sooner or later though.

Smith is no forward but there may be a place for him on the half back flank. Replacing Harmes who is hopelessly out of form.

Brown can be a good lead up target. Did that well in R1 but dropped every ball he got his hands to. Usually a safe uncontested mark & kick. No value as a second ruck though. Sorry @A F, I haven't helped at all

if it's 40 + 2 then i can see smith surviving on the list next year, and i suspect the fact that josh wagner has been pushed out of playing a defensive role - his natural position - in these scratch matches in favour of smith indicates that the footy dept see him as a defender and worth persisting with in that role

i don't see him being in the best 22 of an afl side that is going to be featuring in finals football

if we are reliant upon the likes of smith, baker, hunt, anb, the wagners being in our afl-level side then we're in a bit of trouble

a lot of them are fine athletes and probably very good at lower levels, but there's nothing about their games that makes me think they're worth persevering with if list reductions are completely ott in 2021

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
